I have listened to this Wonderful quartet many times singing “Smile”. This group’s tight harmony with it’s superb message deeply touches my heart & spirit. I have posted it several times also so it can inspire many others. Thank you for sharing~~~such a marvelous experience!
Last August, 2019, I became a widower after 53 years of marriage. As a chorus and quartet singer, I know what it takes to produce such beautifully balanced sound and yours is among the best I have ever heard. It reminds me that until my beloved wife and I meet again, one of the best ways to meet the challenges of living alone for the first time in my life is just to smile often and move on, one foot ahead of the other! I would love to hear more songs by your great group!
I am a Barbershop nutcase and live for 4 part harmony . The mix of male and female voices is fantastic. The facial expressions and performance are world class. Spirit of Harmony Barbershop Chorus
I teach music at an elementary school and this song features two of our important vocabulary words: quartet and a cappella. All of my students have watched this. They have been absolutely mesmerized by the sublime vocals, the expressive facial expressions, and the lush harmonies. Thank you so much! They do wonder why the tenor doesn't take a turn singing the "main part". haha It's absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for sharing.
@@michaeltutty1540 I've listened to Pentatonix's "Run to You," where a tenor melody is present much of the time. Often times in choral settings, though, tenors don't get much more than harmonies, sound effects, oohs, and ahs..
And my comment was primarily focused on this piece, specifically, and was supposed to be taken lightly, as shown by the smile (no pun intended) I put at the end of said comment.
The intermingling of alto and tenor lines are pure brilliant. So easy to ignore the middle parts and the intricacies involved in making up the full chords. Excellent arrangement!
One of the most beautiful vocal arranging I ever heard in my life! God bless Carlito's soul, all the love in the world and these wonderful young singers and their arranger! Roberto Sion, Brasil
I can just see Charlie giggle in disbelief seeing how his song could sound so beautiful through the magic of human voices in harmony. Hard work pays off magnificently. Thank you for sharing your talents.
In San Francisco with fire ravaged skies from hundreds of separate burns. This song really uplifted me on contact. Thanks for a much appreciated uplift.
My childhood was not that happy. I was not confident of myself and my family who lost the dad's figure. My single mom kept saying to me: Never complain. Be happy for what you have, not for things we don.t have. Smile. Just smile to make people happy. Every time I hear this song, I cannot help crying, remembering my mom who just passed away this year.
I don't know if you will ever see this, Ben Bram, but I have an immense thanks to give you. My high school a capella choir worked on singing this arrangement for our big state competition in the 2019-20 school year, and some of the most transcendent musical experiences I've ever had were rehearsing this song with my friends and teacher I loved, us all being collectively brought to tears as we sang. We never did get to show off our 6 months of work at the competition because of covid, and now this song is something of a mourning melody to me. It reminds me to smile even though the things I loved are now passed, like our competition, and my choir group going in different directions after that school year ended. And now I find myself coming back to this song years later, after my 15 year old cat passed away a few days ago. You and your fellow performer's incredible talent would make anyone emotional without the nostalgic tint I have, so needless to say, this song has gotten me through a lot, for a long time. Thank you. ❤
Absolutely mind-blowing harmony, timing arrangement and composition. This is medicine to lift the weight of covid 19 from anyone listening. The hairs stand up on my neck!!!
I return to this version every time I visit my brother at the military cemetery. I sang it to him at his graveside. You guys do such an amazing and inspiring job. Please collaborate some more. Love you all!
Ben Bram does love to arrange in 5 part harmony... (Pentatonix, etc.) As an arranger myself, I have to say I love it too. 5 part harmony is the best! There are chords you can do with 5 parts (including but not limited to 9th chords) that you just can't with a quartet! (Most of the song was in 4 parts though.) Truly a great arranger and a great arrangement. :) Loved the rich chords, and also the attention to guiding us through the challenging lyrics of the song, simultaneously sad and upbeat, with an appropriately serious, but also ringing and joyful arrangement. Thanks, Ben Bram.
I love this arrangement and performance. It seems to me that, unlike some other versions of this song, this one carries a quite serious empathy with the times of sadness - it is not just a blithe or superficial "be happy because everything is fine". So I give thanks, for this beautiful arrangement, and beautiful performance :-)
Great comment. The words were written by Geoffrey Parsons who was gay. It seems to me that maybe the story behind the lyrics was his own sadness of being unable show public affection for the love of his life. I also think it is just perfect for a funeral. It is just such a sublime interpretation.
@LurkinMarsupial, I agree on the importance of empathy for a song like this. I think the sweet, sad melody (Charlie Chaplin's, correct?) really helps there, as opposed to a different song like "When you're smiling...the whole world smiles with you."
This gave me chills multiple times. Those chords, man. Also, most important for me is the heart behind it; there is a warmth here that moves people beyond just getting to listen to a perfect blend. Thank you for bringing both!!
This makes me cry and smile at the same time Remembering my grandpa and missing him a lot ..now more than ever I wish all the people listening to this beautiful masterpiece... a very very happy life ahead ❣️ Keep smiling :')
I'm in love with this version of Smile, it's the most beautiful I've ever heard. Beautiful arrangement, beautiful and clear voices. I never tire of listening to it again and again.
Ben Bram was in a prestigious music program at USC where he met Scott Hoying. He was, by that point, a producer at the Sing Off which is what made it fairly easy for Hoying to audition his 3 friends in the Pentatonix.
A beautifully arranged song written during a time of extreme suffering. All I do is cry during this song. LIfe doesn't become worthwhile if you just fake a smile. The sorrow in its harmonies are anything but uplifting.
One of the most beautiful songs in the English language, sung in one of the most beautiful of renditions. Very moving, very beautiful . . . thank you. (Charlie would smile too.)
I echo the other comments, and want to add how much I appreciate the fact that the singers kept their eyes open, made eye contact and facial expressions! Too many singers so g with eyes closed most or all of the time.
Tears to my eyes. So harmonically rich... lovely arrangement. Made me nostalgic for my early choral days in high school, singing 4 and 5 part harmonies. Thank you, thank you!!! So awesome.
The singer standing next to Ben has the most melodic voice, so gorgeous and beautiful. And the overall sound was so rich, so blended, and delicious to hear.
My funeral is going to be all my favorite songs. Trying to decide which would be my favorite of all time and the last song played has been a challenge. Meditation by Thais has been my choice for year because the music embodies the highs and lows life. However, this arrangement has enlightened both my heart and spirit that no matter what life tjrows at you, just smile. That's the message I hope to leave. Thank you all for an uplifting arrangement and soothing harmonies.
Ben Bram this is the dopest thing I've ever heard. I like to think of myself of a pretty crafty vocal arranger and it took me well over an hour to pick out the vocals. The Alto part is freaking ridiculous and she has one of the best blends I've ever heard. I got to give it to you man this is genius.
I still listen to this version of smile by these incredible singers and arrangers that I still get goosebumps from so much talent every time I hear it...
I've watched/listened to this hundreds of times now . . . I never get tired of it . . . the same way I never get tired of "Satisfaction", by the Rolling Stones . . . of "It Happened One Night", w/ Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert . . . of pepperoni pizza . . . never . . .
Again, thank you my friend for sending this - they could not have done a better rendition and I will take it with me wherever I go on this journey that may lie ahead.
What an amazing arrangement 😍😍 The dessonant and suspended chords are giving such feels ... Very inspiring to newbies like us .. Looking forward to more such videos @Ben Bram 🙌🏻😀

Some people just love to watch the World burn. Shame of you. For every one of the negatives I inject a million positives.
I woke up with this song stuck in my head two days ago, and I've been continually "afflicted" with it ever since. Unable to get it out of my head, I've listened to over a dozen versions on TH-cam, and this just made my Top 3...ranking right up there with Judy Garland and Tony Bennett! By the way, that Add 9 chord at the end...(A) absolutely no better way to finish a song, and (B) y'all sounded like Take 6 (which ain't easy with only four). As I listen to it again...and again...I'm also struck by some of those large, _clean_ jumps in the bass line. Nicely executed!

Sight read this in arrangement in my choir today. Beautiful piece especially after all of the political stuff that's been going on recently. Nice to have music like this as an escape.
'That tenor' is the amazingly talented Kenton Chen. He's a star in his own right, so it was nice to see him laid back and part of a group. Search TH-cam'Kenton Chen.'

@@OmniphonProductions Yes, the melody alone of the music is already incredibly gorgeous even without the lyrics. So it's already very impressive by itself to have been compused by someone who wasn't even primarily a composer.
I love this song, and smled all through it. Then I read the comments below and was sad. Why don't people know that Ben Bram sings? You need to do this more often, Ben! Please? This is a rare treasure. Thank you.
This song makes me sad in a happy way

I've had an extremely saddening day today and I'm glad that you arranged this. It really made my day better. Thank you.

When there are clouds in the sky

If you smile
Through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the Sun come shining through, for you
Light, up your face with gladness
Hide, every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near

@@OmniphonProductions Yes, the melody alone of the music is already incredibly gorgeous even without the lyrics. So it's already very impressive by itself to have been compused by someone who wasn't even primarily a composer.
Wow, that was magnificent. Such beautiful voices and harmonies....thanks:))
....and what an amazing arrangement Ben!
Ben Bram you sing I didn't know that
BTW its really good :)
Still coming back to this to cheer myself up. Hoping for a better 2021, but if not, I'll remember to just smile.
I want to listen with my daughter
I love this song, and smled all through it. Then I read the comments below and was sad. Why don't people know that Ben Bram sings? You need to do this more often, Ben! Please? This is a rare treasure. Thank you.
