  • Challenge Rules:
    - I can only use my starter in battle.
    - No items in trainer battles except held items.
    - No glitches, exploits, or RNG manipulations.
    First playthrough:
    - No Double Team, Substitute until level 100
    - 31 IVs across the board
    - Cheating for information is acceptable as a last resort
    Second Playthrough:
    - All bets are off. Complete the game as fast as possible
    - Max 31 IVs unless pursuing Hidden Power
    - The option of a single egg move
    - I will be playing these runs at 4x game speed
    My footage will be edited to give what I consider a better viewing experience. This includes making cuts, fades, and adjusting the speed of the footage to match my commentary.
    I use a software called "PKHeX" to edit my starter, setting things like it's Nature, and IVs to be perfect 31s, or marginally reduced to give specific Hidden Power typing to optimize strategy. All of the Pokémon I use are 100% attainable in the base game. The software allows me to create my "perfect" egg Pokémon in a much shorter timeframe.
    PKHeX also allows me to set my Pokédex total to max after the Round 1 Elite 4. A requirement of Round 2 is catching 60 species and I am only interested in the potential of the Pokémon that I'm running instead of my ability to catch Pokémon optimally.

    Not to ruin the joke, but just incase you were actually curious, all pokemon names are both singular and plural. "There is a farfetch'd." " there are two farfetch'd." "Look at all these farfetch'd."

    Love the Turtwig line! Torterra was my favorite starter for a long while.
    Fun fact: Falkner's Pidgeotto IS legal, considering you can catch a level 9 Pidgeotto in Viridian Forest in Pokemon Yellow. I wouldn't put it past a gym leader to be able to get that opportunity.

      I had a lot of fun playing Tort! That Ground typing makes such a difference, Bulba's Poison has nothing on Ground coverage. I guess that's true with the Pidgeottos in Viridian! We'll add it to the running tally of "number of times I've gotten something wrong" :P

    Hey Eggy just wanted to pop in before the premiere and say thank you for all the effort you put into your videos! You’ve become an integral part of my personal TH-cam landscape and I can’t even remember what it was like before that big grinning egghead graced my screen every Friday afternoon. I’ve been going through some personal changes the past 6 months that have been really hard to cope with, but are now starting to turn into stability, so thank you from the bottom of my fleshy heart for helping me out from the beginning of this time period to now.

I'm glad that things are turning around for you, I'm sorry things have been so difficult. One foot in front of the other, every day, right? Cheers :)

    Amazing run! I didn't even know HGSS hat Round 2 Elite 4. One important thing when running Earthquake and Rock Slide together: Weavile took the same damage from both: STAB EQ Is 150, super effective Rock Slide is 150 too, but with less accuracy.

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That's a good point! STAB Earthquake is just so darn good. Rock Slide definitely helped with the following Honchkrow, but EQ was the better choice against Weavile. I think for whatever reason I mixed up it's typing and thought Rock Slide was 4x effective. Thank you! I'm so pumped to eggsperience more runs in SS!

    I checked out the channel because of the live stream you did with Scott's Thoughts and I liked what I had to see, plus I subscribed. As someone who regularly does HGSS solos myself, it's cool to see someone else take a crack at them and see what I can learn and what I can teach others. I do have quite a bit of constructive criticism, mainly about things regarding HGSS, but a few Torterra specific ones. I'll say right here that you were playing the Red fight on a diamond dust day (February 29, March 15th, October 10th, and December 31st are all documented ones), which you can tell because of the hail looking sparkly in the overworld, when it normally falls. Also, your Torterra wasn't taking damage from hail at all, so that as well as Blizzard misses should have indicated as much. Anyway, on to the rest of my comment (I'm sorry in advance for how long this comment is, I just love these games):
    Before Falkner, instead of using the Escape Rope to escape Sprout Tower, you can walk back and go to Ruins of Alph with the Unown "ESCAPE" room to get a free Oran Berry. Especially in first playthroughs, I highly recommend getting this item unless you're very confident in the Pokemon's matchup against him. Rock Tomb tends to only be useful for Bugsy (maybe rival 2 as well) and then falls off hard for the rest of the game, so while Torterra in this format doesn't need it, it would make a huge difference if you did a solo starting as Torterra. For HM users, I like to use Sentret (learns Cut, Surf, and Whirlpool, which I later upgrade to Tentacool to also learn Waterfall), Rattata (early Rock Smash for Shell Bell, later replaced with Muscle the Machop to not only learn Strength, Rock Climb, and Dig, but also for her held Macho Brace; it's an in game trade in the Goldenrod Department Store on the 5th floor which requires you catching Drowzee, a 50% catch on Route 34), Kenya the Spearow to learn Fly, and an Abra from Voltorb Flip to use Flash as well as Teleport, which helps in case of mistakes or for fast travel before Fly. Mine isn't necessarily the best HM user spread, but it's what I'm used to using and it might help you. One TM I highly recommend using is Substitute, available in Voltorb Flip for 2,000 coins. It breaks AI a fair bit, like Thunder Wave spam against Jasmine, Clair, and even Lance, plus it makes Morty and rival 3 quite easy since it can shut down their statuses as well as Curse. There are also other uses for it, like blocking Intimidate and tanking a super effective hit if your soloist is very slow (think Parasect using it to tank a Charizard's Flare Blitz). I've seen some people mention this already, but generally speaking, you should save the Master Ball to catch the Snorlax for its held Leftovers. Not every solo requires it, but a lot do. A tip I haven't seen many people mention is if you have a soloist that learns Thief, especially if you're using a physical attacker that doesn't set up, you can use it to steal a White Herb from one of Blaine's Pokemon (worst case scenario, you white out after taking the White Herb and then win, I've done that a few times).
    As for Torterra specific criticisms, I'd recommend making use of Rock Polish in the post game. TM69 is north of Lavender Town and it would go a long way to make up for Torterra's lackluster Speed. I imagine a post game moveset of Swords Dance, Rock Polish, and two attacks (likely EQ and Return/Rock Slide) would demolish lots of threats. In the early game, I could see Torterra making use of Synthesis quite well alongside Swords Dance to be a powerful tank. It can be tricky figuring out exactly which two attacks Torterra should have at that point, especially for the Elite Four, but it's certainly worth looking into.
    If you read through this comment, thank you very much. These are my favorite games of all time, so I want to help in any way I can. I'm excited to see you improve more and more at this game!
    Edit: I also wanted to add that I recommend slowing down game footage at times to emphasize certain narration, like when you build up drama for if your soloist gets the KO, then you should slow down the HP bar and maybe zoom in. Also, with the jokes you made, I think they would have been more effective with editing tools I mentioned before. Generally, I think the narration would benefit with having the footage sync with what is being said because it felt a bit desynced at times and took away from the experience.

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's what was going on then! Diamond dust days.. I have so much to learn in this game. I figured that stuff was falling, therefore Hail.
      Knowing about that Oran Berry is nice. I tried getting cheeky and farming shards before Falkner, but of course you can't without the badge. Rock Tomb I can see falling off after Bugsy, but hey. If it deals with Scyther then that's all I need it for.
      The need for Rock Climb in the post game really threw off my HM cheerleader plan. I just learned too that Snorlax can learn it, so Sentret becomes much more viable, and Geodude becomes skippable. I think with Sentret/2 Sentrets, and then Surf/Waterfall coverage, Kenya covers Fly and that's it.
      I'm well aware of Substitute :) Sub strats, best strats particularly in the solo format. I try to shy away from using it too early because it's SO darn powerful. I actually had to ban it in my first runs in FR because I wasn't being forced to think often enough.
      Oooooh that's a super neat trick to farm White Herbs from Blaine. The White Herbs and items like that are something I need to get more used to. Again, most of my experience is in FR where held items are incredibly limited.
      Your points on Torterra are fair. That's something that I'm trying to focus on while learning everything else in the game is broadening my knowledge of TMs/move combinations that exist. That's why I felt that this initial series would be so great. I'm going to learn so much from comments like yours. Thank you for all of your input :)
      I do try my best to match the footage with the commentary. It's all a question of time, and it is just me doing everything on these videos. I record at 240 fps to be able to slow down by a factor of 4, but sometimes even that isn't enough without introducing interpolation. I've been working on my voice over work lately, and I've been working more on my timing. I'm getting better with my editing, but the retention style is something that I don't really enjoy myself. I don't need things flying at my face every 4-6 seconds.

      @@Eggsceptional I appreciate you taking the time to respond! I definitely understand being hesitant to use Substitute, but imo it is such a good and useful move with lots of good reasons for it, even aside from the exploity ones. I don't blame you for having a faulty first playthrough at all, a lot of mine are as well. I also understand why you don't use that editing style yourself. Sentret and its evolution Furret is an amazing HM holder who can be caught in the very first patch of grass after you get your poke balls, during the day time mostly but also rarely at night.
    It can use Strength, Surf, Rock smash, Cut and Whirlpool. Making it a must have for anytime you play through Johto honestly. Hope this helps future runs and saves you some time from catching multiple!
    My favourite games by the way, the original and their remakes. Thanks for showing them some love and the torterra line. Bulbasaur will always be my favourite because it was my first but torterra is by far the best grass starter in Pokémon. Complete powerhouse with crazy good coverage.

Johto and with my favorite Sinnoh Starter! great vid always, also yeah Falkner is weird with his usage of Roost, I remember one run where he used it 9 times in a row even when I doing less then half but I think that was because I was using Mareep and he might've been using it as a way to avoid super effective damage from Thundershock
    also you probably know by now but at 5:32 behind that Rock Smash rock there's a hidden Rare Candy and at 5:20 that rock right below your character has a hidden Great Ball in case you need it for catching HM cheerleaders (I have the early game hidden items memorized due to restarting a lot of Nuzlockes...Whitney and Morty aren't my favorite gym leaders when it comes to Nuzlockes)

      9:35 honestly I feel like this Rival Battle in particular is only a challenge if he has Bayleef, with Quilava like in your battle he goes for Smokescreen a lot and with Croconaw he goes for Scary Face a lot and Water Gun is his best stab move and even Bite off it's attack stat isn't too bad, with Bayleef though he has Poisonpowder, Reflect, Synthesis, and Razor Leaf which can turn into a slow stall battle if you don't have the right counters. Zubat, Gastly, Ekans in Soul Silver, and Pidgeotto with Gust are my go to options for this battle but for some solo runs I can see this battle being so annoying if Poisonpowder connects and he goes into a healing loop with Synthesis, overall though the Chikorita line is he's weakest team in the long run but for this battle it's arguably him at his strongest

      That's all you have to do though when it comes to the Beasts, the parts with Suicune and Eusine are optional, not sure if battling Eusine is worth it though, I usually do it for the extra exp and cash but in a timed solo run I can see him being skipped to save time, as far as EVs go you do get 1 Sp.Def, 2 Sp.Atk, and 2 Speed and his team is pretty easy to beat since Electrode is his only "dangerous" Pokémon since it knows Thunder and will outspeed anything you can have at this point but again skipping him is probably the better option since you have a cutscene and battle to deal with

    • @Eggsceptional

      I'm really looking forward to discovering some of the AI quirks in this game, like Falkner's Roosting, and Bugsy's Leering. Yes I did grab that Rare Candy behind the Rock Smash rocks in Alph. It was one of the first I learned the location of actually! I can see Whitney being nasty in a Nuzlocke, but honestly Morty has surprised me a couple of times already. Sucker Punch hurts sometimes.
      Based on how you broke it down I'd agree with the Rival. Bayleef sounds like it has the most potential to troll. I haven't run Piplup quite yet but I'm a little worried about that one now.
      Good to know with the beasts, I will have to keep releasing them.
      I did know that the Eusine battle on Chuck's island (Cianwood??) is optional. Don't mind me as I try to remember this region as well as I do Kanto. I'll get there :) He caught me off guard too in my original attempt so I'm leery of him, but will totally take the XP if I need it in the future.

      Johto is a fun region so I can see you learning it pretty quickly, I pick Totodile the most of out of the Starters so I'm really familiar with the Rival's Chikorita team in Gen 4, I did do one run of HG where I sent over eggs of the Sinnoh Rival, Barry's team when he picks Piplup (I sometimes do runs to see how well a Rival's team does in their game or in a different one and Barry's Piplup team did an amazing job in Johto/Kanto) with Piplup or mostly likely Prinplup you do get Metal Claw so maybe an attack buff can swing things in your favor, you also get peck which is good. Anyways good luck with Chimchar and Piplup (Chimchar is gonna tear through most of Johto, especially if you get the Shadow Claw TM to the east of Morty before his battle)@@Eggsceptional

    refreshing to see a run of HGSS instead of the usual FRLG. Had a few ideas that may allow u to ponder for future runs though.
    For TMs wise, especially the game corner ones, would u maybe consider playing the JP version of HGSS instead? In those versions, the old game corner is still available that allows u to exchange pokedollars for coins to get the TMs easier, I love voltorb flip for the international version but it just makes getting TMs tedious, especially some of those TMs can be game-breaking, such as 95 BP elemental moves, SD and sub. Not too sure if there will be a eng patch to make this work though. (PS. was writing this while I was watching until u kinda addressed this, but maybe it could be a consideration to make)
    Early game I saw u catching a wooper but there is a free wooper egg that u can take from violet city with a secret code that u can generate from online, just for u to know. :)
    Allowing mom to save ur money for u can be useful as well, gd for gathering random berries for natural gift usage or some OP items like muscle band, focus sash or even choice scarf, it helped me so much for my min battles run.
    Round 2 of E4+ Lance is nice but personally, I felt it is not needed, red on the other hand is imo harder compared to the whole R2 of E4
    Last but not least, catch the snorlax. Its ur only access to leftovers in this game since there is no more leftovers in the celadon restaurant, just use the free masterball from prof. elm on it

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It was refreshing for me too! I've told a lot of the same story over and over.
      I could definitely look at trying it out on the JP version. The only concern I have is that I'm struggling enough knowing what moves do what on the English version :P I was thinking about leaving the budgeted moves at the Game Corner as a last resort. I don't want it to be a cure all, but some Pokémon would just be awful to run without it. I also don't want to spend hours grinding.
      Isn't that secret code unique to your player ID? I wonder what's faster.. plugging that in and inputting it or catching the wild Woop? Hmm.
      I did have Mom saving money. It's unfortunate the berries she provides haven't been super useful yet, but they will be. The Silk Scarf for sure is.
      I think it depends on the runner. I can see R2 Lance being much more difficult than Red for some Pokémon. Plus with my FR content I've kinda made a name for myself doing R2 content. I can't help myself I like the high level stuff :D
      Also.. The Snorlax. Great tip. A few people have pointed this one out, this is exactly why I wanted to do this series. Thank you for all of the advice :)

    And maybe teaching outrage for Lance could work after swords dance set up. If only it was available without wasting time on the battle frontier.😅 At least you can try sandstorm for Red and for lance to reduce thier hp.😅 I hope that can help a bit.
    I didn't play a lot of gen 4 because of the cutscenes,and the game felt much longer than it should have been. So I don't know much about it like I would with gen 2. eggcellent sir, most eggcellent. you run my boi very well. its hard to say how well or how badly that run went as my experience with SS is about the same as yours and I have only used Torterra in Diamond and Platinum. I had a feeling the gyms would be rough though because of the type match ups though and I think you handled each of them very nicely. I'm surprised you didn't keep Curse around longer or consider growth for some special boosting. when we talked Torterra a while ago I think we went through all of its options and it does seem to get most boosting moves exception some of the bigger ones. curse was nice though, in Crystal nearly everything got curse so its very Appropriate. did you look into the move relearner to give wood hammer for some physical grass STAB, might of been handy, would of hit Red for Neutral or better for most of his team.
    Crunch must of been very nice to have for most of the run. a rare luxury for any Pokemon regardless of Gen. Gen 4 crunch makes so much sense though, its a big bite, that should be physical. I mentioned Snorlax and Charizard getting it in Gen 4, but there are others, Steelix for example and Feraligatr. you're going to have lots of fun with it in Gen 4 and the all the moveset upgrades. your rules with budget are interesting, game corner coins I'm gonna say fair enough because in any game with a game corner there are ways to make money and get anything and everything you want from them. but the battle frontier move tutors, not so much, if it was Platinum where the tutors cost shards maybe as they are infinitely farm-able to an extent, but the battle points need to be earned, feels like giving too much to too many. saying that, some will absolutely need these move tutor moves to stand a chance. egg moves will still have a place at least, always the egg move eggs and in SS they are very nice. I believe I mentioned belly drum for quite a few in my last comment, Magmortor with belly drum and some elemental punches will be very nice when the time comes.
    I have not started a new run yet, my breeding session is slow, breeding 30 magby and 30 elekid with egg moves and then testing HP and IV's on all of them is very slow when you're doing it the old fashioned way, HP is at least not so needed on elekid as the meditate physical set is kinda limited anyway and the special set is very much set in stone with the punches and psychic. testing magby or HP will be the important one. I am also going for a nidoking with confusion and amnesia for shits and giggles to see how that runs as well, I am considering either queen or victreebel for the team as well. should be fun

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I tried my best! I'd say that there were quite a few opportunities for improvement, but that's why I just need to play the game. I didn't think that Turt learned Growth? Maybe I missed that, either way the phys stats were so much better. STAB EQ Hydro + recharge in most cases I feel. Snorlax feels like the ultimate Belly Drummer so it's only appropriate that he has one of the highest potentials from it. You may yet convince me of just running it randomly for the fun.
      Yeah for sure, I commend you for doing it all the fully legitimate way. There's just no way I could produce the content I do and grind that process out. A special set definitely feels like the way to lean with them in Gen 3, but ugh. Fire/Electric/Poison in R2. It's just a rough time no matter what you do, unless you're also Flying. That's a fair point with Queen's Crunch run. Shadow Ball pretty much covering the same typings makes the special set that little less enticing. Especially since Queen gets Aerial Ace. I've actually been curious if there's a run where a STAB HP might be good. Maybe HP Ground -> EQ later but that would be lucky. I think HP Bug is the most useful STAB I could think of.
      The forest track heading towards Lostelle is one that I need to learn better, especially considering how many easily accessible berries I'm just walking over. I hope you noticed in the second race on Thursday that I remembered to grab those berries between Lavender and Saffron! The Leppa you mentioned behind Six Island Pokécenter is one I need to grab more too (when needed).
      What about a Cosmic Power/Belly Drum/Metronome/Rest Clef :P You'd be a wall. A really, randomly dangerous wall. A full Metronome run sounds like a rough, but interesting time. Definitely 1 playthrough only. I don't think there's a lot of "optimizing" such a playthrough.
      You raise a good point with the level curve in the Gen 2 remakes. I'm noticing that most of the time I'm not hurting for levels in the first part of the game, but often times level 80, even into the 90s I'm still lacking power against R2 and Red. That's a big reason why I was thinking about the egg move all the time in SS. I would have had Seed Bomb instead of Razor Leaf for instance (likely, I can't remember all of Tort's egg moves).
      For sure! That's such a crazy process getting everything set up with the perfect egg moves for your runs. The dedication is real! The evolutions to the Magmar/Electabuzz lines were super cool addtions, but I'm still waiting on my jacked up Jynx to come in. Or has that happened and I'm simply unaware of it? You know me. Gimme my set up moves and I'm a happy chappy :)

      @@Eggsceptional I just looked it up and growth is an egg move, no wonder you didn't get it, but fair point with the physical set and STAB earthquake is very hard to pass up, especially with curse and then swords dance available to you. wood hammer could of had its uses, much like the elemental hyper beams like frenzy plant, it is best saved for a big finisher. I can see a way forward with the recoil moves. the recoil they inflict is based on the HP they take from the opponent, it would be more effective used against Pokemon with lower HP so it doesn't deal back quite as much. used on Shuckle for example, it might KO but do little in recoil because of shukcles low HP but on Chansey, you might take yourself out with it because of its monstrous HP. I think your volt tackle usage was that, water types have high HP after all.
      I know you love your crunch, every chance you get you use it, same here, but in all 5 of the Gen 3 games, opportunity is slim, glad you had fun with it. the belly drumming sets will be great when they come around, thanks to the extended movesets of Gen 4 and the extra egg moves of SS (yes some egg moves are only in SS and HG), you'll have plenty to work with. Snorlax is the the king of Gen 2 and with a drum it will conquer SS as well. crunch drum lax will be its title (I do hope you nickname it drum lax). the polis will be interesting to see again but with the belly drum option. having a set to back that up might be tricky aside from HP and brick break, I cannot think of much the Polis get in Gen 3, if I recall, it ain't much.
      thats sounds like a solid option for your Queen, shadow ball despite the cost is worth having for the early power and higher attacking option plus aerial ace is very nice for the physical coverage, add in body slam, superpower, brick break, sludge bomb, earthquake, rock slide, its gonna be good. HP ground is great call, relying on dig for STAB for the whole run is not consistent and like getting crunch very slow. bug is a good option as well as it covers the psychic weakness until shadow ball is bought but aside from an early HP ground, queen doesn't massively need a HP.
      I did notice your extra berry hunting on Thursday, glad to see you're doing more of it, there are many extra place as well, but you'll get to them in time too. considering you couldn't have the meowth army, the berry hunting becomes very worth it, especially with your luck with status especially poison.
      I kinda like that as a set, I am sure Clef gets something other than rest for recovery, moonlight surely, it would fit given its found in mt moon, evolves by moon stone and the old lore says its from the moon, but I digress. only 1 run sounds fair, its too random to be consistent after all. maybe it could be your live stream for April 1st (I think its Monday or Tuesday this year) could be a giggle, a novelty opposed to the more serious Drum VS Calm mind Clef.
      its fair to say SS is a step up from crystal, especially with the post game, but the power jump is massive by comparison, the need for levels in the late and post game is much more evident. depending on what you are running 80's is reasonable for Red and the R2, but I'd say 90 is the minimum you'll need for most of these SS runs. investing in hunting every rare candy will be a must and saving them all for the R2 at the least will help you a lot. in light of the difficulties you've had with the R2 and Red, I think I can forgive the use of the move tutors and yes egg moves from the off as you need something for the sake of sanity if nothing else to bridge the gap.
      I have my team planned, physical Electabuzz with meditate, special Magma with HP ice, the punches and psychic and mixed Nidos, there will be crunching Queen and Confusion King, but they will have mixed sets on top of that. I have only just finished getting the magby and elekid set up. I don't know if you have ever tried breeding the Nidos, but it is a pain. I breed on average 30 of a Pokemon and test the top five for IV's for HP's. with the Nidos its not so simple. you have to use a female Nidoran for breeding, Rina and Queen will not produce eggs. and it is an even 50-50 shot as to whether the egg will hatch into a male or female Nido so potentially I need to do 60 in order to get enough to test, its gonna be a long night getting this one and its not eggsactly a necessary one, I have psychic coverage with psychic on magmar after all, Amnesia and disable are a novelty to try though and King gets all 3 from just one dad, Slobro, very odd.
      I'll tell you this one, thanks to the breeding chain I used, my Elekid got its fall moveset from one hypno, the punches (which it got from Hitmonchan) and meditate from level up, all came at once, which sped up testing as I didn't need to breed a separate line for the physical and special. and no I am afraid there is no Mrs. Popo Evolution, I doubt there will be at this point, they could of with Gen 4, but didn't, I think there is a way to make an evo that looks right, so if you are running the Gen 4 evolutions, its a straight 1V1

      @@jptheflipper3825 Ahhh gotcha. I won't in the upcoming video but I've decided to start including the egg move all of the time in SS. It'll make the runs that much more interesting for me. It's out right away so I'll comment a bit on Chimchar's run. It was the first time I experimented with a recoil move. I shied away from Wood Hammer, but my use of Flare Blitz with Shell Bell made me realize that might have been quite viable. Also Shell Bell recovery on a 1 shot of Snorlax? Delicious.
      I think I might have to do a Snorlax run in the not too distant future. It just sounds so fun smashing through with a) one of my faves, and b) a professional Belly Drummer. I don't think the Polis got anything insane, but with STAB Surf coverage adding to Belly Drum physical moves it might be viable. Another question for another day. As with the Nidos runs! I will get to them.. Maybe that's even one where I consider a larger scale video where I attempt running them in SS as well for the expanded options. Argh. So many things I want to make!!
      I'm pretty sure Clef can learn Moonlight yes? That rings a bell somewhere in the back of my brain. That would be a really fun run to attempt on stream. I can see that being pure chaos I like the idea :D
      I've actually decided to finish my official run timer at the end of R2. Red is going to be a bonus battle because he's just so ludicrous in SS. Some runners that I tried just got straight outsped and oneshot by Pikachu until being leveled into the mid 90s. That's too much grinding for me. I'd rather experiment with strategies and levels as a bonus battle than attempt it properly every run. I'd drive myself mad.
      Oooh Magmar with HP Ice sounds like a good time. What does that leave for lacking coverage? Gyarados I suppose, but also you have Psychic. Which is amazing. How long would you say that breeding out a "batch" of 30 Pokémon takes you? Including testing, etc to find the candidates among the batch that you want to play with? I think that end up being one of the first VS videos I tackle in SS is something like Magmortar VS Electivire. Simply because they didn't exist in Gen 3. And the babies.. but they can stay in FR for now

      @@Eggsceptional thats a good combo right there, you have the recoil but the shell bell recovers it, and against a snorlax? did it recover you to full or at the least over 50%. very nice combo, might try that myself, my Gen 3 runs can use that as Sapphire and Ruby have access to shell bells. with that in mind, would you revisit Torterra to see how it works out.
      you will enjoy the Snorlax definitely, there are a few things to watch out for with it, for one the speed, it has none. and its defense stat is not the best either, its HP makes up for that a little, but I think maybe a little defense curl/rollout will do it some good, I'm not sure if double edge is available in Gen 4 for it, but it could work out quite nicely with the shell bell combo. you'll have crunch as well of course and earthquake later as well as a few other Gen 4 treats, like the punches.
      the Polis are tricky like that, one Poliwrath in the fighting only run turned out to be the best special user as STAB surf was nice, as was access to psychic, ice beam and hypnosis with mind reader for never misses. I have never tried Toad in Gen 3 so I can't speak as to how well it will go with drum, I think the drum polis would be better runs for Gen 4 as the physical coverage is there is use.
      the Gen 4 Nidos will be massive runs, the full physical and special options for both will make them very interesting, you'll still have the crunch issues from Gen 3 with Queen though, special Queen and King will be awesome though. I'd say test them out proper in Gen 3 1st though, get a feel for them, if they struggle massively in the R2 for you, just imagine them in SS against Red or the R2 league.
      I looked and yes Moonlight as well as an interesting egg move for more randomness, it gets present from Delibird, the power varies and could turn into a heal for the opponent, imagine the random pain it could cause. I love the idea of the chaos it could bring, I still say do it for April Fools Day, that could be fun.
      that seems like a fair move to make, that R2 is rough enough on its own without adding in the Red battle. Red is the hardest trainer in pretty much any game, I think he still makes the Top 5 lists, even all these years later. I think the last battles of Gen 5 make that list too as you experienced. Pikachu is fast but with a only a base 90 speed number could get that out speed without much issue, especially with the nature, IV's and EV's of course.
      I do have thunder punch for the Magmar remember, so thats a solid, fire, electric, ice and psychic coverage, quite full and powerful. I;d say each one too me a full day at least, I finished my Queen solo on Friday and didn't finish the breeding and testing until Tuesday, but I had to do extra for the Confusion/Amnesia Nidoran, the run is underway now and is going smooth, my Blastoise is soaking up the attack EV's and Nidoqueen will get the special. I need to decide what set Dragonite will get though, I'm thinking a little utility with dual STAB for good measure. I'll let you know. I am also going to run the starters as solos at some point before gong to Sapphire and Ruby, see if I can do Blastoise better

    Johto is easily the most mishandled region. In Gen 2 it was flawed, but not in the quirky way of Gen 1 and then in Gen 4 they failed to really fix those problems.
    And Pokemon is 'supposed' to be played a single time. You don't skip cut scenes because you only get one chance to see them, you only get one save file because you are supposed to only play one file etc. Which is why you have to deal with random stats on your one off encounters.
    Edit: And don't get too distracted with physical boosting, special attackers ignore Intimidate so you spend less turns trying to boost around it.

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I always felt that the best part of Pokémon was that you got 3 different starters options, and an huge variety of team combinations, and wild encounters, all of it to have a different experience every time you played. I'm a little confused on your advice with physical boosting. Tort was a physical attacker not special, so of course I was concerned with my physical boosts.

    • @135forte
      @135forte 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Eggsceptional I am assuming you plan to run mixed attackers like Infernape as well. I personally feel that Scott's runs with it (and the special attacker Empoleon) suffered because he fixated on Swords Dance as a boosting option. Having to boost past Intim on top of having to boost normally has you taking a lot of hits that could be avoided with special attacks, especially something like Infernape gets Calm Mind as well.
      And TPC has some decidedly unusual views on how their game is played compared to how it is actually played. Some go back to the creation of Gen 1 and some are more recent, but the majority of them seem to ignore the reality of how the games are played.

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@135forte One thing that I was confused about with Infernape is the fact that it gets Calm Mind. The entire learnset to that point pretty much is physical, then suddenly a special set up move and Fire Spin. I won't speak too much to the path that I took yet, but Infernape at least had the speed to back him up.
      That's fair enough! I guess when you released something to the masses, they will probably find all kinds of ways to experience your game that you were unaware of before.

    • @135forte
      @135forte 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Eggsceptional It's a mixed attacker and Calm Mind is the most logical special boosting move for it. And most of the good Fire moves (Flamethrower) are special. I would have to sit down and really look at stuff, but Flamethrower as your primary damage, Close Combat as panic button, Calm Mind to boost and a flex slot would probably be my take on the set.

      @Eggsceptional  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@135forte Hmm that does sound like it would have been quite potent. I'm still definitely getting used to that phys/spec split. I'm so stuck in thinking about trying to deal with Red's Pikachu. @Eggsceptional oh for SURE. There's a positive correlation in your video with how fun they are and the number of egg puns and musical interludes per minute. Of all poketubers I watch do runs they all kinda have their niche.
      Jrose is no frills- here's the challenge, I'm gonna do it. He's an innovator.
      Scott's thoughts is just so much technical aspect. The dynamic overlays and community he has has brought so much data to everyone.
      Squidgey I like because he always shows his most optimized run only and it really gives the sense competition in the speed race aspect with each mon.
      Flygon HG and Antlerboy are both just wholesome goobers who make me laugh. There are so many great creators I don't watch just because I don't find them entertaining and that goes a long way.
      Your brand is eggs and egg related puns and that goes a LONG way in my opinion. The addition of egg moves is such a fun way to spice up and level the playing field for a lot of otherwise low tier mons. Your format is great, pacing is great, scripting is great. But only when you're having fun. During different videos, your energy seems lower when you try to add or restrict yourself in ways that you may seem arbitrary and makes the game more difficult on yourself. So screw it!
