How Facebook Marketplace Became SO Popular

  • Facebook Marketplace has started to completely dominate the used exchange scene, becoming the place to go whether you’re looking for clothes, furniture, or used electronics - they’ve got it all. Marketplace is the only reason why many people are even still using Facebook, and we think there’s a good reason for that.

While I agree that the topics you are covering are true and important. The assertion that brands not wanting to associate with you is evidence that you are telling the truth about them is false. I could make up crazy lies about a brand and they would also probably want nothing to do with me. Patreon is a good way to diversify your income so good on you but try to stick to talking points that stand up to scrutiny. Your reputation for honesty is a strong point to make with brands that you do end up working with; as you endorsement does carry more weight (at least for me) than that of a typical TH-cam channel.

I've literally furnished my entire house through Marketplace, with the exception of a couch, a mattress, and a few area rugs. In a big city, even IKEA furniture is great to buy second-hand because its super easy to find someone selling the exact product you're looking for a fraction of the price. Over the years, I've even sold several items I bought from Marketplace (usually for the same price or higher) when my furniture needs changed. I absolutely love some of the unique vintage pieces I've managed to score over the years. It takes some patience to wade through the scammers and weirdos but 99% of my interactions with people have been just fine.

I used to like FB marketplace, mainly because I could buy and sell items in person within a close distance of where I lived. But then Facebook changed it so that local options are suppressed in favor of shipped items. Now most of the items on the feed are dropshipping products or bootleg stickers.

That's actually insane how little options does US and Canada have to sell used things peer to peer. There are ebay, craigslist and fb marketplace, OfferUp + Kijiji and that's it. It worth mentioning that most of them are complete trash with ui/ux from early 2000th and lack of normal search, sorting, filters and etc. In Europe there are much better options like OLX and others
Tbh, I find Amazon's user experience outdated and not predictable as well. Everything is built on search which have some complicated algorithms preventing you from seeing what you want, but rather what they want you to see.

I opened the front page and-right at the top of the push list-saw identical postings for the same phone/accessories from posters in different locations. I immediately understood that Craigslist was over. Because scams (the driver of the market) have much better advantages on FB Marketplace, and no threat of safety policies you'd become accustomed to from the old network of "just some people with email addresses."

People in NYC at least use buy nothing heavily and it is a pure gifted economy/ dumpster diving/curb stooping. The rule is things must be free.
Buy nothing groups have their flaws, but overall if the neighborhood is active and there is a strong community presence, you can get a lot of cool things for free like furniture, random food ingredients, party supplies, clothing, etc.

Levi I don't know if you ever did this but as a kid growing up in the 90's. I loved dumpster diving and going to the dump. I can't remember how much treasures I've managed to save and reuse. It actually makes me mad now that they don't let you go through the landfill. Every time I go I see so much stuff like bikes that just need some work and they'd be back to like new. I understand the safety factor of letting people go climbing over mountains of garbage and metal but to me that's unacceptable when there's perfectly fine thing's that might need a little work but still serve their purpose.

The last couple times I tried using Craigslist I realized it isn’t usable anymore. I found myself having to scroll through 10+ pages of spammed posts for new $30 mattresses to find a legit post from another person. If I tried searching a different category for something else, say a bookshelf, I was bombarded by page after page of the same spammed posts. I just bought one on ebay as I tried one from zero waste club and after you posted about leaf I bought one from Poshmark which I had a bloody time with….literally. The Henson razor took no time to learn and I haven’t cut myself yet, even putting a blade in it. And such a close shave! You may be able to do an entirely positive future proof! I have no affiliation with this company, I just think it’s wonderful and don’t want them to go out of business as part of their advertising is it’s a razor to pass down through the generations and we need more products built to last. Plus this razor is so lightweight, and balanced and well engineered so that it’s almost idiot proof.

Isn't there a difference between buying something cheaply and selling it on as for 4x as much as getting paid for your time when you restore something?

The only reason I really use Facebook is for the marketplace. If there was a better option to FB marketplace, I'd probably rarely log onto FB.

Many of your reasons why “facebook marketplace worked” could apply to facebook dating too. Why didn’t facebook dating work then?

I collect antique ivory carvings and taxidermy from endangered species like sea turtles, but neither of these things are allowed to be sold on Facebook Marketplace as stated specifically in their TOS. That doesn't stop the algorithm from showing me numerous postings of exactly what I'm looking for along with other prohibited items I didn't know I wanted, almost like the algorithm knows exactly what is being posted and doesn't remove it on purpose.🤔😁

Is so useful but also it frustrating how people lie here, in my country some people puts "free" and then when you contact them they tell you a price, (here the cash functions in $1000 is like a bit more than a USD, so people out on the price tag 1234 or 1111 so their announcements apear by the filter of lower price since $1000 Chilean pesos is cheap, and the worst kind is the people who put believabe cheap prices and then in the chat they tell you that the true cost is like 10.000 more than the price listed, it makes search so hard and wasting time, and is being dishonest
