  • Join me outside on a series of sketching trips, where I’m documenting elements of the landscape in one of the most beautiful sections of Scotlands north west coast line.
Currently I’m waiting to start a new body of work, and this video is all about taking time outside to regroup, draw in response to the landscape, and let new ideas percolate for future landscape paintings.
If you’d like to know more about my drawing challenge (titled a September drawing challenge, but which can really be done any time / season) check the blog & video out here:

Such a beautiful landscape. I enjoy watching and listening to your videos very much. I would buy a Zine of the sketchbook you flipped through at the end of the video...:)

Thank you, I just love this part of the world 😊 ooo I’ve always wanted to make a zine, maybe that’s one of the next projects I should work on ✨

these sketches look like so much fun. i'm in need of that, i think i will get myself some cheapish oil pastels as well. any brand you recommend? thanks again for the inspiration!

Absolutely! They’re one of my favourite materials, so much fun to work with :) I haven’t used them but I know Faber castell do some pretty affordable ones - in all honesty some of the cheap ones have great pigments. I got these ones from the works years ago, crayola aren’t bad either… more swanky ones for the future are sennelier or caran d’ache neo colour. If you have an art store locally, I usually buy 3-4 colours in the neo colours that I know I’ll use which avoids having to get a set :)

@@OrlaStevens @fluentinsilence_ the faber castell are fine, i have used them. to be honest you can't go wrong with any of the cheap brands for having a play and seeing if you like the medium, i've used lots of different ones and they are all pretty similar. amazon have a good selection.

@@OrlaStevens i have a few senneliers/ neopastels but i’d like to take a bigger collection with me, to go out and draw but in the spirit of exploration/ experimentation; so i’m looking for a less valuable option. neocolors are fun, i agree, but they’re quite hard, i need softness so i won’t be tempted to pay too much attention to detail 😇
