- Hey Coaster Fanatics, This is my HD front seat on ride POV and review of The Thunderbolt. The awesome wood roller coaster at Kennywood. This coaster built by John A. Miller has a max height of 70 feet with a drop of 95 feet and a top speed of 55 mph. Thunderbolt has a track length of 2,887 feet and a total ride time of 1 minute and 41 seconds. This coaster still runs its old century flyer trains and is considered an ACE coaster Classic & Landmark. I love old roller coasters like this that still give great rides in modern times like this. I highly recommend riding all the classic wood roller coasters that Kennywood has to offer! Enjoy the ride. Probably the most underrated coaster at Kennywood, I think it's better than the other coasters in the park
I can agree to that with the exception of Phantom.
What I meant to say was the other wooden coasters at Kennywood, and skyrocket, I do think the phantom is better, also if you get the chance this ride gives an amazing night ride
Michael Baum true that, there are strong rumors of a new coaster coming in 2019 so hopefully I can try the night ride then. I wanted to ride it when I was there but I was pressed for time and I needed to move on to the next park.
Michael Baum what !? Um everyone knows its the best
Kennywood is my home park and i know this park and its rides inside and out. if your looking for some great floater air time, sit in the back and youll fly out of your seat going down the first drop and second to last drop after the helix section. If you want some crazy ejector air time, sit in the front and when youre pulling up to that chain lift, you get thrown out of your seat before you start going up the lift. even with all these new gci coasters and woodies, the thunderbolt is the best wooden rollercoaster out there because of how classic it is, yet its incredible rides throughout the decades. Plus, a night ride on this is unbeatable(you feel like your flying and going faster than you actually are ;)
true classic for sure. I'm hoping to get some night rides in at Kennywood hopefully in 2019 if they get a new coaster.
Good POV!
BryceFourn 2001 thanks!
Like how your mixing them up and keeping it unpredictable. Relying on these great POVs and reviews to get me through the winter months. Nice work. BTW, I recently went back and watched some of your earlier videos and while they were always good, there has been a noticeable improvement. Remember, no matter how fancy your equipment gets or how professional your editing, graphics, or narration gets, it's fun to go back to check out the old stuff.
Tim K Awesome, thank you very much! Yes I've made some improvements especially with my narrating. Thanks for watching as always! Get ready for a little bit of lake compounce next week. hint hint!
Longtime no comment.. Lol I loved this one. Would love to ride it someday. I just love your videos. 🙂
IM 2 MUCH Thank you very much! It's a good ride!
The Thunderbolt was rated the #1 roller coaster by the New York Times in 1974.
I like what Great Old Amusement parks described this coaster. "Who cares about unimpressive stats when it's just plain fun?"-PBS. It's a great documentary and I highly recommend it!
Coaster Nano I'll look into that but yeah I agree. It's not all about stats and air time and all that other stuff. Fun is all that matters.
I hope you all enjoyed my video on Thunderbolt. Please leave your thoughts in the comments and let me know if you enjoy this coaster.
CoasterFanatics hey Patrick did you get a back seat ride on this oldie but a goodie ,also back seat on Jackrabbit , with that double drop , that's true ejector air
Robert Swickard I didn't unfortunately. They were super busy so I bought the wrist band to get one front row ride on each coaster. I'm sure I'll be back around 2019. Rumor has it they are getting an RMC soon.
CoasterFanatics that's to bad that they were jammed packed ,those moldie oldies will surprise you with there guick stop and starts, flat turns with a lot of side g's , puts my riding partner ,my wife , in my seat , is just plain FUN !
The On complaint I have is the Double Up. It's thrown me into the lap bar a few times.
Turned on video as soon as I got home
Brave Shadow Gaming Nice, thanks!
looks an interesting course with what looks like an exaggerated helix after the lift hill . Q looked a bit long for my liking . nice POV
John Shores Yeah it was the longest wait in the park by it was worth it at the end.
That's odd considering thunderbolt in my experience is always the shortest
Is it just me, or did they REALLY slow down the train before the second ravine drop before heading into the station?! From what I remember, it moved through the straightaway and track brake area MUCH faster in the 90’s and early 2000’s. This is my childhood park and haven’t been back since 2004, when I moved to Arizona.
George Oberdorf I have no idea to be honest. I rode it for the first time this year.
Pretty interesting how the final drop is actually the largest on the ride
True that, It's an odd layout but i really enjoyed it.
Did you get a Jackrabbit POV while you were there?
Dude McMann oh course, I'll be posting it soon.
Any more rumors on 2019 RMC?
I haven't heard anything new but i think it's happening. I'm hoping for a ground up topper track but it could also be a raptor as well.
I don't think there RMCing any of the classic wooden coasters they have, it will probably go in the unused land behind the racer
I fel of dis coaster XD XD
"youre going in first cuz im not getting squished"
lol yep!
Of course, the BIG drop of Phantom's Revenge going through TB is a great moment.
As far as the woodies of Kennywood go, which do you prefer? Thunderbolt vs. Racer vs. Jack Rabbit?
DukeofColumbia I think thunderbolt was best although I enjoyed jack rabbit a lot as well.
Went on this when I was a teenager, my favorite wooden coaster right behind the Comet at Great Escape, which used to be at Crystal Beach. It was #1 in the world before even larger wood coasters were built.
Eric Fellner Awesome! You gotta love these old classics!
So would you say that it is not a bad kind of rough?
Tony Kim no it's got that classic wood coaster roughness. The kind that won't give you a concussion at the end, lol.
It’s wooden, needs to be RMCed. Awesome review and POV.
It was a joke
lol, Thank you!
NO
What's your favorite wooden coaster you rode this year?
Coaster Nano That's tough. It's between outlaw run and el toro. Loved them both!
