  • I bought this Reed No. 103 vise at a flea market for $40. It was not working properly but was an easy fix. Vise came out beautifully.

    Those old Reeds are workhorses! Hoping to find a 104 one day. Excellent restoration, that paint came out beautiful!

    I really enjoy vise restoration videos, and I enjoy restoring vises. Kind of surprised to see that this Reed does not have removable jaws. I have a Parker 272, which is a 4-1/2 inch vise with both a swivel base and swivel jaw. It was a fun, challenging job, as the swivel jaw had been frozen in place for decades. Thanks for showing the work on this Reed.

      I love the Reed vises for sure, they are super high quality! I also restored a Parker 372 with swivel jaw...here's the link if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/qytlJuF5COU/w-d-xo.html

      Man that will be such a great vise! Pretty sure in my mind I have settled the issue of which brand of vise I like best…….. for me it’s Reed.

      @@shopdoc for me my favorite is Athol which later became starrett. I think the form is a better look, I like the extra mass and the over built jaw support is great. The only feature I like better on the reeds is the retention collar with set screw. Athols retention clip is not quite as robust

      @@GoldmansGarage well I have to admit…i have owned a lot of vises but never an Athol. They seem a bit rare in my area. Thanks for that info…..I be looking for one now.

      @@shopdoc if you have the opportunity I definitely recommend picking one up. 4.5” jaws and under for the stationary and swivel base models I can usually pick up less the. $100 the 61x (613, 614, etc) are the stationary models. The 62x (623, 624, etc) are the swivel base. 63x are swivel jaw 64x are the swivel jaw swivel base. Usually a bit more money. The 71x series is a unique design with a ratchet handle. Often this is broken or missing a spring. And like all great vises the 6” and larger jaws command huge prices. What area are you in? In the north east they are about as common as Parker’s and reeds

    Hey Chris! Another great Reed video! Thanks! That 337 is in fact the date code- so, March 1937. Very cool!

    I believe the 337 is the manufacture date. I have a 214R, it’s stamped 355 in a couple spots.

      I have one with 2 numbers:
      725
      399
      and they're not aligned with each other. So I'm guessing July, 1925 manufacture date?

    As always, a great job! All of my reeds have the same date stamps in the same places, and I would bet it was manufactured in March of 1937. That also makes sense given it is not an R series. The revised vises have the split collar and show up in the mid-40s. Did you ever find date stamps on your 104 1/2? It seems the earliest R series went with the split nut, but kept the “meatball” end for the screw instead of the “hockey puck”. 👍

    I agree with your opinion to fix only what really needs it and leave most of the cosmetic stuff alone, I see it as a utilitarian device made for working not for show, I also define a restoration as returning an item as close to original condition and not grinding it flat and filling it with Bondo I just find it really impractical.

    • @shopdoc
      @shopdoc  ปีที่แล้ว

      100% agree. I especially dislike the use of body filler on a vise. Just silly but those videos get hundreds of thousands of views! Crazy!

    • @shopdoc
      @shopdoc  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not 100% sure but they are typically very utilitarian in color so most we’re probably grey or black. Thanks for watching.

      So glad I found this video. I have inherited my dad’s and in the process of restoring. Quick question how do you get the pin out of its not missing? Last part to get out.
