    Chatuchak market is arguably the largest outdoor market in the world. The history of this largest week-end market in Thailand started after WWII. Originally, it was located at Sanam Luang which is near Grand Palace, Thammasat University and Silapakorn University. This large open field is also used as the venue for King's funeral rite ceremony. The market was/is managed by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (Bangkok City Govt). About 50 years ago, the week-end market was moved from Sanam Luang to the present Chatuchak land area which belongs to State Railway of Thailand which leases the land to the BMA to operate the week-end market. Originally, the Sanam Luang vendors were opposed to the relocation, fearing there would be no customers as Chatuchak in those days seemed to be very far from the city's center. However, within a few years Chatuchak market thrived and there were even more customers. The original vendors at Chatuchak who rented the space cheaply from BMA are now millionaires because they could earn huge revenue every month!

    Legend states that when King Taksin, at the time Ayutthaya mandarin, led some troops to break the Burmese siege of Ayutthaya and arrived at this old temple at dawn, so the temple was then named Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun). After Ayutthaya fell after one-year siege, he led troops from Chanthaburi province to expel the occupied Burmese troops in Ayutthaya. Then he proclaimed himself King and moved the capital from Ayutthaya to Thonburi and built a royal palace adjacent to Wat Arun and this temple then became the Royal Temple within the Palace domain in line with Ayutthaya tradition. The same could be said about King Rama I when he moved the capital from Thonburi across the Chao Phraya River and built Emerald Buddha Temple within the Grand Palace. When Thonburi was still a distinct province before it was dissolved to form Bangkok metropolis about 50 years ago, Thonburi's symbol was Phra Prang (Stupa) of this temple.

    Wat Pho is an old temple south of the Grand Palace. It is also known also as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha built by King Rama III in 1832. The King also decreed that traditional Thai massage and traditional medicine be inscribed on stone tablets to deseminate the knowledge to the general public. The famous Thai spa and massage are believed to originate from such stone inscription. King Rama III was also known as Merchant Prince because when he was still a prince he conducted trade with China and asked the ship captain to bring back stone sculptures such as Chinese deities, mythical beasts as stabilizing balance in the ship's belly. These stone sculptures are now commonly seen at Wat Pho, Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. When President Obama had only one day to tour a Thai temple, US Embassy recommended this temple due to its unique architecture, history and beautiful reclining Buddha.

    Awesome content! I’m traveling for 3 months around south-east Asia, starting in Bangkok (29 days) & going up & over through Laos (13 days), Cambodia (19 days), Vietnam (22 days) & re-entering Thailand (25 days) via Phuket airport. How would I best arrange visas for all countries? P.S my route between Laos & Cambodia goes through Thailand (3 separate entries)

    • @Joelfriend
      @Joelfriend  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would recommend going through the south of Laos into Cambodia directly, makes it easier. All visas are on arrival apart from Vietnam I’d recommend applying at least 20 days in advance you can do it online look up Vietnam eVISA

    Thailand's China Town was created more than 100 years ago when Thai King gave land to Chinese migrants to settle in the outskirt of the old city Grand Palace. The first road was constructed in the reign of King Rama IV named Charoen Krung Rd and later Yaowarat Rd was constructed to link up with Charoen Krung as well. Since it was/is the commercial hub, Yaowarat Rd was/is one-way traffic even 60 years ago. China Town was the center of rice trade in those days as there is nearby Chao Phraya pier bringing rice from provinces into Bangkok. It is no longer the center of rice trade as road/rail transport is highly developed over the years. For at least 60 years, China Town is the center of gold trading. There are about a dozen gold shops on Yaowarat Rd selling bullions and gold ornaments. Daily gold price is prescribed by Gold Trade Association in China Town. For the last decade, Thailand China Town, the largest China Town in the world, is the place to go at night for delicious food/drink. It is arguably the largest open night market in the world. It is estimated that about 10% Thai people are Chinese descents.
