Thank you so much for posting this. Growing up gay and catholic was and still is a struggle, but people like you give me reassurance and hope. Also ps: one of the most successful and smart women I know grew up in the heart of the bayous of Louisiana with the thickest southern accent I’ve ever heard :). Thanks for this Mary.
Jackson H may I asked how your feeling about being catholic and what the Pope said last week about God made you and loves you just the way you are. My daughter is gay and even though we are not Catholic she was happy to here it.
I was raised a strict Catholic but I do not believe in all of the "rules" that go along with the religion. Not everything a sin. Everyone is beautiful. Everyone has a right to love and be loved, no matter if it's with a man or a woman. My late sister was Bi and many of my best friends are part of the LBGTQ community and I wouldn't have it any other way. I couldn't imagine my life without them in it. Keep being you honey!!!! ♥️❤️
This made me smile because a few years ago my daughter who was living in California accepted a job in North Carolina. She is in her 40's and didn't know what to expect. Fast forward and she loves the climate, has so many friends , bought a condo and has never been happier!
Your Southern accent is a big reason for the popularity of your videos. Here in California most people speak in a millenial monotone or in foreign tones. Your Americana accent is music to my ears.
I firstly subscribed because of your accent, Mary! Then I just fell in love with the different type of videos you make compared to other ASMR creators. I also got tingles from this video because of your accent 😂🙌🏼 Love your work!
This is really useful, thank you Mary. We're all human, trying to survive in the rat race. Again, thank you for this humbling and grounded talk. :) xxxxxx
Mary this was awesome. Totally forgot about that story till today and it's an awesome one. I totally agree with you. I've come to a place of trying to catch myself right as I begin to judge someone and say "Oh snap-wait a minute girl" lol I always tell my boys, your gonna do it, were human, but the thing to do is say "wait a minute, what if that were me?" Such a great video girl. And thanks for reminding me of the Sneeches! (Sp?) Lol
OMGOSH!!! I would love a soft spoken video of you reading the Dr. Seuss sneeches book! But the way you would read it to a class, like held up and we can see you too You're amazing thank you for your videos and hard work!
ari g I can't read that stuff, unfortunately. I already got a copyright strike for it. If you get three copyright strikes in 90 days, they delete your channel, and you can't make another one. It's not worth the risk.
SouthernASMR Sounds oh no! I never thought of that...but i wouldnt take that risk either! I watched a reading video of yours about wishful lying and I absolutely loved hearing that story... I'd never heard of it before and it spoke to me as well! I think it's actually a really important book to read to kids in school and everyone in general should read it...and the bonus of it all is you have a video reading us the entire story!! Thank you so much Mary!
Thank you Mary. That has always been one of my favorite books. I try so hard to not judge and think about the whole story behind the face but being human... yes I screw up sometimes too. Oh and that instinctive feeling we have is called "Fight or Flight" but I'm sure you knew that. (7 years studying psychology. That and 5 bucks will get me on the subway!) Love you girl! Keep 'em coming!
Yes, I have a degree in Psychology and am very familiar with that concept. We're just another animal when it comes to the fight or flight reflex, and other reflexes.
Having 3 littles under age 11, at times I’ve been that frazzled Mom. Thank u for posting this! In those stressful moments I TRY to remember, “This too Shall Pass”..& it always does! ❤️👍
Yes, it does pass, and faster than we expect it to most of the time! Those days are just a distant memory, but the lesson I learned from it will stay with me the rest of my life.
I love you! I'm a recovering heroin addict. Something I struggled with for ten years, and even when I was at my lowest, homeless on the streets, I would still look at a meth addict and say, at least I don't smoke meth. I am guilty of doing exactly what you are talking about, but I think it was because I would rather look at someone ele's faults, than look at my screwd up mess of a life. Self awareness is extremely important. Especially when it comes to changing your life for the better.
“How are all southerners? How many years have you spent down there?” YES!! Had the _exact_ same conversation many a time after moving to Indiana, and I got so frustrated I said the _exact_ same thing. Crazy thing is he tried to _continue_ to argue with me that the south is all racist 🤦♀️ (Ironically I’ve witnessed more racism up here in four years of high school than I ever did in 14 years growing up in southwestern Virginia.) His excuse as to why he knew better than me was because he has relatives that live in Kentucky. He genuinely thought he had just as much authority to speak on the issue as me based on that. I absolutely feel your pain there 🙌
I’m one of those who love to hear you talk just about anything :) I hope that people who complains about the eating habits of your family also watches this and realise there may be things you’re not sharing with the camera :)
Oh my Gosh!!! I remember this story from when I was little but it was one of those things where you don’t know if it was real or if you dreamt it? It’s all coming back to me now 😂
Proud to be southern. Now let’s talk about those silly Yankees 😂😂😂😂 Seriously though, great video! Another reason I love your channel!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Kindness is ALWAYS the best route!
I've never watched a video so carefully. I forgot who and where I was while watching this. 😐 I wasn't bored or distracted. Quite the opposite! I think you have a gift. Maybe you should be on tv or radio. And this subject is what I've thought about sometimes.
You're totally singing my tune and I hope more and more people come around to recognizing this. And we can't fix it unless we recognize it in ourselves. And I've gotten it from people. Let's call the two big political parties are the Plaids and the Dots. I've been called a fan of the Plaid candidate and a lover of the Dot candidate. I've been called a Plaid extremist and a Dot of a sort of perversity that cannot be stated here. When it comes to music, people see me and assume I'm into country or classical or power ballads, and then they find out I like hip hop and start suspecting I'm involved in radical movements or...something. Men have accused me of prudery and compared me to a "hooker." So yeah.
👏🏻I got it , I get it, I totally agree ! Ya never know , so never assume ! Ive lived by the Golden Rule after reading that rule in first grade! Thanks for doing this xoxo 😌✨❤️👏🏻
Great message Mary. I have the perfect example about karma and life teaching a lesson: my (very opinionated) friend would often mention that she LOVES brown eyes on a man and CAN'T STAND blue eyes and only likes dark haired men (she has blonde hair/blue eyes herself) Also that she does'nt like ginger haired people because they have a certain smell!! Now she has a 1st grandson and what has life given her?? Yup ginger hair blue eyes!! The red hair she says came from her grandad! She hasn't mentioned these preferences since getting her grandson...
(Pam Goldsmith)...Mary, I'm Canadian and some assume things about me too. Some think it snows all year and we all live in the mountains. Someone once asked if polar bears walked the streets, if they could ski in July, and if we had ATM"s? I was insulted!! We actually have beautiful summers and fall, have modern cities and all the conveniences of a modern country. I have only seen polar bears in pictures and no, we don't all say "eh"....lol. If only some people would take the time to know heir facts before saying things they know nothing about. Sadly, it happens all too often.
I’m from Asheville NC and a lot of people would assume it’s open minded but unfortunately it’s another part of the south. I wish that everyone could be like you Mary. It would be awesome
Haley Robs You can find idiots everywhere. To say that the south has cornered the market on close-mindedness is inaccurate. People are the same, no matter where you go. That's been my experience, anyway.
I totally agree with this. My boyfriend's grandma is very religious and very homophobic. The irony was that she ended up having a gay son. She ignored him for years. Now he's happily married and very wealthy. I was raised Catholic but I grew up in the city. I moved from the city, to the suburbs, and now I live in the country. I've been lucky enough to meet people from all walks of life and find that people will surprise you. I've met country folks who become nuclear engineers, people who live in nice suburbs who deal with depression and insecurities, and I've met city people who love trucks and fishing. The world is an amazing place and everyone views the world in a different way. If people would listen to each other and get out of their own bubbles, we would be so amazed. Thank you for your insight Mary. You are a wise woman!
I've never understood all the anger and strong negative emotion toward non-hetero people. Even as a child, it perplexed me. I truly don't understand why it bothers some people so much. Why anyone cares how another person lives their life is beyond me. Why are they so emotionally invested in something/someone who has NO impact on their life or anyone else's? Sheesh. Live and let live.
I want to be a social worker to help drug addicts and people judge them all the time and I used to because I thought a drugs addicts were dirty homeless people who don't want to have a job, but I did research on the topic and realized that there are rich poor middle class all types of people do drugs and this is just a example of how you need to put your shoes into the other person you're judging and see why they are in a certian position in that particular stage of their life. That does help and you start to adapt to that and you become less judgmental. But of course you will always judge a person or people. Also preach Also loved your LGBT shirt 🏳️🌈💛♥️❤️💙.
Brenden Pool I was a social worker for a few years when I was younger, and I learned a great deal about not judging a book by its cover during that time. It was a valuable learning experience for me. 💖
Brenden Pool I am a recovering heroin addict. And the amount of judgement I have endured is so ridiculous. I have suffered through things that the majority of people wouldn't last a day. I am now almost five years clean. I have an amazing four year old. And currently writing a book. Seeing your comment warmed my heart! We need more people like you! My best friend who was a veteran, lost his life to addiction 7 years ago today, I lost my brother a year ago from it. Thank you for this comment!
An early ASMR youtuber described ASMR as originating from personalized, focused attention from someone else. I don't remember her channel, she's russian though. I like these ASMR vids the best because it's nice to know that someone else has experienced the same spectrum of experiences as me.
Also, I wanted to comment that I absolutely loved your shirt but you had to disable comments on that video. (Also a Southerner, though not natively, and also not prejudiced).
Yeah, my microphone malfunctioned, and the sound is dreadful. I didn't feel like dealing with all the inattentive fuss-buckets who'd reply "SPEAK UP!!!" Disabling the comments just seemed like the right thing to do.
I have to admit perhaps I'd be a Star-Bellie born with a star. Yet I am extremely humble about it. I never look down at the non Star-Bellies. In the contrary, I talk to and help the Non Star-Bellies anyway I can...I'm inclusive... . .

I was a new recruit, and they had to put me in my place. It's a long story. I literally wrote a book about my year up there and the things I experienced in that group.

You’re such a gifted story teller :) and super relaxing too!
This made me smile because a few years ago my daughter who was living in California accepted a job in North Carolina. She is in her 40's and didn't know what to expect. Fast forward and she loves the climate, has so many friends , bought a condo and has never been happier!
Great message, you're a wonderful story teller. ❤

Well, I'm glad some people can appreciate it
I would love to sit down and have a cup of coffee with you one day just to absorb all your knowledge!
You're unapologetically you, and that's amazing! I love hearing from you, you always seem so confident and I hope to be more like that one day.
Wow, i loved this video and it was so eye-opening !! Thank you Mary 🤩💗
If we all could put ourselves in someone else’s shoe’s, we’d be a lot more kind to each other. You just never know what someone is going through.
I firstly subscribed because of your accent, Mary! Then I just fell in love with the different type of videos you make compared to other ASMR creators.
I also got tingles from this video because of your accent 😂🙌🏼
Love your work!
Your honesty to yourself is unreal. I could definitely learn a thing or two from this video, thanks so much ❤️
This is so true. A piece of wisdom we can all benefit from. Walk a mile in another persons shoes, before making judgment. Thank you Mary.
100% THIS!!!! A good message for all to hear ✌☺
Ok... Time for Mary to get her own podcast. People need to hear her little gems 🤗
If I didn't have a full-time job, I'd seriously look into starting a podcast. For real.
There are stars upon ares! Great message! Loved that story as a kid
I do love to listen to you talk!!! 😙
Amy Blackwell Thank you!
I feel like you are just one of my best girl friends and we are chit chatting.

Thank you for making this video! I love everything about this video!
As someone from Illinois, I just wanna say....

Well said Mary. I have thought about this topic at great length. I mostly agree with what you said.
I loved this Mary! I learn a lot from you!
Mary, You should be a motivational speaker 😘. I am a lecturer and I admit that I have learned this lesson from experience.
Thank you Mary you're amazing!💘❤💓💕💖💗💙💚💛🧡💜🖤💝💞💟❣

I'd like to also add that all of human kind would immensely benefit from KINDNESS.
So many people are only kind if they expect to get something in return. It's sad.

(I’m kidding pls don’t think I’m serious and make me the new nine assholes)
I know. My slack-ass attitude is starting to show in my videos.
You should have never been rebuked ridiculous
I was a new recruit, and they had to put me in my place. It's a long story. I literally wrote a book about my year up there and the things I experienced in that group.
SouthernASMR Sounds Have to share some more if it with us if you wish x
SouthernASMR Sounds well would always defend you anyway lol
I did a series of videos reading my book, entitled "River Road". I have a whole playlist of those videos, if you're interested.
