Refurbishing, reusing and re imagining is my favorite type of woodworking. Far more fun than building new to me. Great Job, hope your customers like it and treat it with the respect a piece of furniture that old deserves.
I've reused a number of pieces of "previously used" wood in projects..... the quality and character of old growth wood makes it worth it and adds an interesting dynamic to any project!
I had to cut some foam but I didn't have an electric carving knife. The guy at the foam store used what looked like a Makita jig saw but he said it was a special tool for the foam industry. It had a 12 inch scalloped blade. I purchased a similar blade for my jig saw. It was a Bosch T313AW3 blade which is a 6 inch Knife Edge for Soft Materials. These blades work great. Amazon sells a 3-pack for about $15 at www.amazon.com/Bosch-T313AW3-3-Piece-Special-Materials/dp/B001J0U1HC.
Honestly I was skeptical of it when I first saw it. But once I had it in my shop I was amazed by how often I moved it up and down. Low for sanding, high when using my dovetail jig, in between for lots of other stuff.
Great job repurposing the bed! You now have a bench that has 40 years of character and is ready for another 100 years! This type of reuse was common years ago.... unfortunately we now have a disposable society!
That is better than okay! What a great idea and job!
George - your work is always fantastic - love how you show your mistakes.

You did a great job!
The electric knife trick is brilliant!
I like to use a high loft batting after you put the foam on. It gives a nice softness
Great idea & well finished

Parabéns!
How do you like the adjust-a-bench? How often do you find yourself adjusting the height with projects?
