I was born in Statesville N.C. Tom was hung near the train depot in Statesville. Later Statesville flour mill (one of the largest in the south) was built near by.
@@WyomingTraveler You are welcome. The simple way, I think, to remember is people are different from everything else. Or that the execution (of people) is its own conjugation. I didn't explain that well. The pictures hung, and the people hanged.
Thank you for making the video. We live in Europe but we play the song in the car. My 12 year old daughter said, this text is so different. So we looked into it. Very cool.
So, you are from Europe, welcome to my channel. Where do you live? I live in Belgium for six years. I appreciate you viewing my videos. If you liked Tom Dooly, you may enjoy the Yellow Rose of Texas video.
The song about Tom Dula was written by Thomas Charles Land in 1868. The Kingston Trio were the ones who sang it and made it the most popular in the 50s.
Thanks for kicking off with Doc Watson , his and Frank Proffit's version have a ring of truth lacking in watered down renditions. I'm proud to say I met Doc and Frank Jr. and other fine folks like lovely Jean Ritchie, bluesman John Jackson, Elizabeth Cotten and many others who had nothing in common with the depraved characters of this ballad, they were wonderful people.
I'm 70 years old. I have been listening to the story, threw the Kingston's Trio since I learned to walk. Somehow I have always known that Tom Dula was innocent. And now, had the lady who passed or was killed in the wagon crash, with her confession would have acquired Tom Dula, but back then, confessions didn't really mean much. There was nothing more fun than a hanging, kinda like the games of the galdiators of the Roman empire. I still beleave Tom was innocent and the dying woman's death bed testimony was true. People who know they are about to pass, do not lie. They have no need. FREE TOM.
Thanks for your comment. Like you, I have known this song since the 60s. I knew it was based on actual people and an actual event, but did not know any of the details. While researching the video, I discovered that the story of, and Laura was way, way More complicated. I also found that much of the story is contradictory and based on hearsay from various people that may or may not have been involved in the story.

Thanks for the additional information. is there a historical marker?
Sorry, but it is "hanged".
Oh, through was the proper spelling.
Hanged or hung, I always get confused. Still not sure, but thanks for your comment @@Svensk7119

Song Tom Dooley is my age. Cool. Interesting. Thank you for bringing it to you tube.
I am happy you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
Tom was what we call nowadays a "player."
You’re right. I prefer to call a horn dog.
It was very interesting, thanks for posting it
Thank you for watching and commenting
I hope and wish someone knows all, or at least most, of the people in that group picture. Genealogy is great.
Thank you for making the video.

Thanks for your comment and watching the video. Tom, Dooley and his associates were quite a group. They were 100 years ahead of the hippies.

There's a good podcast show about this, with a woman named Charlotte Corbin Barnes
