CHIHOMBIRO (zim shona film) Part 1

In any marriage, infertility breeds adultery, visiting traditional healers and extended family involvement to ensure a couple has children. When Bhuru marries Rudo and they spend five years without a child, which five years included several trial and error with traditional medicines as well as mistrust between the couple, the bride’s family decides to step in and offer Rudo’s young sister Maidei as a concubine to Bhuru, albeit in a hidden way. Unfortunately things do not work out as per their plans and Maidei reneges on the idea but is then raped which she keeps a secret to Rudo. Rudo then purports to be pregnant and goes to her family where she comes back with a child purportedly of Bhuru.
Ten years down the line, with a son between them and a supposedly happy life, things take a deadly turn when Bhuru brings home a local delicacy of mushroom, Chihombiro, as a relish for their lunch. The couple believes they have eaten poisonous mushroom and are on the verge of death and the confession sermon that follows rattles the family and disintegrates them. Maidei, Rudo and Bhuru are torn apart by the secrets they accumulated during the dark years of barrenness.
