Compared to Apple this year, I think Google really nailed it (phones and watches). Totally agree, I think offering a Pixel watch "Ultra" would really get some attention.
They need to add music storage and a speaker to listen without headphones. Also, they need to realy get pictures from your phone available, apple has been on that for years.

Do you think a comparison between Pixel cardio load, daily status etc., and Garmin training load, training status, body battery etc. would be possible? As a fitness device it would be interesting to see how they compare especially now that Pixel can pull load data without starting an activity which Garmin can't do.

I completely agree-we need a Pixel "Ultra" watch urgently! As a long-time Pixel user and a fan of larger watches, I've been wearing the Garmin Fenix 51mm series for years. I was really hoping for a bigger Pixel watch to match my Pixel phone, but unfortunately, it didn't happen this time. I'm still holding out for that perfect combo of a large Pixel watch and phone!
Finally purchased and started wearing the Pixel 3 45mm watch and loving the larger screen. I'm a gym mouse (not quite a gym rat, but I do workout out there a lot) -- finding the watch very easy to navigate and use. I've been wearing a cheap "knock off" smartwatch for years (cost me $35 on Amazon) that does everything, but wanted to splurge and use my birthday gift cash for a better quality watch! I don't run, but I enjoy the other features like Sleep, HR, and connection to phone for email and calls. Only thing I wish I could do with the app is remove all the activities I do not use, and be able to scroll directly to Workout, without having to go through the entire alphabet to do so.
It's not just the size difference on the ultra watches, they generally look more durable. The pixel watch does look like it's going to scratch very easily
With you, desfit and quantified scientist all saying good things I bit the bullet. Good bye pixel watch 2 and hello 3. Excited for the bigger screen. Hopefully next year or the year after we get an ultra
I had the pixel watch 3 xl. Screen was beautiful. I actually loved the stock face. My issue is it was scratched pretty bad within 24 hours just from going to the gym. Crazy thing is it was LEG DAY. So I wasn't doing anything upper body and don't even remember really hitting or bumping it up against anything. I was also wearing a hoodie which generally stretched over the watch. But suddenly, I got home and looked down and was HORRIFIED considering I'd just gotten the watch about 15 hours prior. I ended up sending it back. I've worn my pixel watch 2 to the gym multiple times and don't have a single scratch on it.
Great video as usual! I've tested the PW3 45mm on a few 7 mile runs and have experienced terrible HR cadence lock on the last several miles. It's perfectly in sync with my chest strap for the first half of the run and then elevates to crazy high levels (like over 170bps) while my chest strap is steady at 140. Doesn't look like you experienced this at all based on your runs, so wondering if I have a funky unit! GPS and pace was shockingly excellent (even on trails), but was surprised by my specific negative experience with the HR given all the hype around the new running algorithm.
I experience cadence lock on the Fitbit Charge 6 as well making it unusable for running, which was not identified by reviewers. The Charge 6 shares the HR algorithm with the Pixel 2 watch but maybe the issue is still there for some on the Pixel Watch 3 like you're experiencing.
I ran a few times with a pixel watch 3 45 mm and for a steady state run, the HR was spot on with my chest strap. However, when I did a shorter high intensity run, the HR had a little trouble in certain spots. This could have been due to me not wearing it appropriately. I.e. maybe I could have made sure the fit was secure. But it's tough to tell. A bit of a tangent... I swim everyday with my Garmin. I was very disappointed at the metrics in the pixel. Watch. It basically just gives you how long you've swam. It doesn't give you HR or distance or anything else. It's not a big deal, but I felt that was a feature that was really lacking compared to the competition.
I left my new garmin fenix 8 51mm slate gray for this. I feel way better now that the watch tracks my load across everything i do regardless of its a recorded workout or not. Also its very nice not having a watch nag me about anaerobic, aerobic, and low aerobic. I just run do HIIT and lift sometimes and can still maintain my fitness. Garmin made me realize im not that type of athlete although i do run a 1/2 marathon every sunday morning
Fitbit/Googles sleep tracking algorithm is objectively more accurate than Garmins, so this makes sense. Garmin has not been able to get their accuracy above 40-60% for sleep cycle tracking, where Fitbit/Google and Apple are much more accurate. Garmin really needs to improve their algorithm especially for the price they charge for their devices.
It's quite strange that Garmin can't seem to resolve this issue when they are so advanced in other features, unlike Fitbit, Apple, and Whoop. For instance, when I used Fitbit, it would show me how much I slept without ending my sleep session. If I fell asleep again, it would track it. Here, I need to end my sleep session only then will I know how long I slept. If Fitbit or Google come out with a more rugged-looking watch, I may just pick one up.
Ray, really helpful review. The cardio load metric is truly compelling for my needs. I have a few questions: 1) I'm glad there's a larger size for those who need it, but for those of us with smaller wrists, how much of a usability hit does the 41mm size take vs the 45 (I have no experience with earlier Pixel watches, just the Charge 6 tracker) 2) Does the running workout mode function on treadmill runs? 3) Does it broadcast heart rate; ie will it pair with Zwift Run? Thanks!

I have the PW3 41 mm and the Garmin 265S! Which do I choose? They are both very good. On my short run today, both watches had the same HR, the Garmin was spot on to the PW3, but the pace was always faster on the PW3.
I've had the same experience with it draining a lot during exercises and very little other times. I haven't tested it a lot, but interestingly noticed that when I am not playing music through my phone during the exercise, it will drain considerably. No clue why that would matter but I noticed a 20-30% battery drain versus 10% on the exact same run. It's worth trying to figure out what causes the random high amounts of drain! My watch is a 45mm wifi if anyone else has some anecdotal comments.

I get that it's impossible to do an in-depth analysis of the running dynamics figures (cadence, vertical ratio, oscillation, etc) due to the data being locked down by Google, but would love to know how those metrics compared just at an average level vs what you normally see on a Garmin.

As for GPS, None are totally accurate, so will see a variation in tracking. Solar activity also effects accuracy. Only military gps Is dead accurate. Love finally the HR tracking us spot on, but you never see you ever test walking steps accurately. We are all not into running, but walking
I understand your sentiment, but I feel like these batteries are getting good enough that you can fit a good 15 to 30 minute charges. In between your day there's moments where I take a shower. I don't shower with my watch so I put it on the charger. There's moments where I get home after a long shift and I want to unwind for a brief moment before I lay down. I drop it on the charger. Even if the pixel watch gets 3-day battery life next year, eventually you'll still have to recharge it. Even if it gets 5-day battery life, you'll eventually still have to recharge it
I charge mine when I shower and don't think about it otherwise. If you configure some of the settings to preserve battery, you can get 3-5 days battery life out of the larger size PW.
With the new silicone battery 🔋 technology, it is completely possible for manufacturers to put 600-700mAh batteries in their smartwatches ⌚ in addition to using the new Dual processor architecture and thus offer us smartwatches with a minimum of 5 days of battery life, but in fact, they don't care, Sheep 🐑 consumers will continue to buy, so why bother 🤷🏽♂️ 🚶🏽♂️🚶🏽♂️🚶🏽♂️
Garmin is gonna have issues in a few years. Apple, google and Samsung coming for it. More user's gonna go their way and only few to garmin. Buck up Garmin
Yeah, I agree. For years Garmin was the choice for anyone wanting to track their fitness. But in my opinion for like 90% of people, apple/google/samsung is more than good enough for that these days. For more hardcore users like ultrarunners etc, Garmin still remains king, for now :)
It doesn't help that Garmins latest watches are so ridiculously expensive. Some people will probably just buy a Pixel or Galaxy watch for €300 - €400 rather than the €1k+ Fenix 8.
a bit unfair to say that samsung hides features behind their ecosystem and google doesn't. Those features (ecg and bloodpressure) aren't even available on the pixel watch and google also has those ecosystem features, they just aren't health features (e.g. controlling the camera of your pixel phone). I wanted to like the pixel watch more but as it stands it's not worth the price difference to the GW7 for me personally. So guess I will be in the market for a new GW
I'm confused, the Pixel Watch has had ECG since the PW1. You're right that it doesn't have BP, though. Also, the PW can control your camera (wasn't really following that part of your sentence so I apologize if I misunderstood).
@@nashdashflash you are correct. Somehow I didn't know about the ECG on PW. I have seen in other reviews that the PW gives you extra features when paired to a pixel phone when it comes to the camera app. Which could be argued to also be ecosystem features

When I finished the workout, it didn't really provide any metrics to view afterward. All he gave me was a time and an approximate distance. A little lame.
Could the reason heart rate from the watch matches the strap heart rate be because it’s reading data from the chest strap? Also doesn’t it only work with android phones and not iOS?
The strap works with all apple watches, and almost no android watches. So the opposite is true. Obviously, since we have 2 different graphics, the strap was not connected to the pixel watch 3.

As opposed to what other watch?
@@KemAlimole for example, Samsung. For $300-400, they offer a flat screen and sapphire crystal. Samsung watch 6 for 4 months of active use, zero scratches. I hope Google will also add a sapphire in the watch. Given their excellent sensors compared to Samsung, it would be a bestseller.
@@KemAlimole anything that actually incorporates sapphire in the screen or has the screen slightly recessed in the frame.
@@KemAlimole galaxy watch 7 uses sapphire, you can start with that
Haven’t seen the video so it may be covered but having bought it I was disappointed to find that the fall detection/ 5 button press emergency does not work with Samsung galaxy phones
I only get 24hours battery life with my pixel watch 3 (41mm) is this normal? On a day with zero work outs.
how do you say the HR monitor is identical to a hr strap? you must have had one hooked up at same time connected to another phone or tracking device...?
I had four watches, including one paired to a HR strap.
@@Dcrainmaker oh ok... I'm using the apple watch ultra and considering this one to sync with a pixel phone... Wondering if it's any better... I just do normal stuff like track gym workouts and walks every day 1.7 miles... We'll then the sleep tracking is important
@DC Rainmaker:
Random question. What phone/ecosystem do you use as your daily driver? I ask as I'm an iPhone user getting ready to switch, so I'd love to gain your feedback, especially when you spend a ton of time in Europe. Appreciate your input. :)
Thanks for the review. I can appreciate that they made a 45mm model, but in my opinion it still looks too delicate and feminine. But maybe Spigen will make a rugged case for it. Would like Google to release a ultra/pro/whatever version next year with a more rugged design and improved battery life.
As for GPS, None are totally accurate, so will see a variation in tracking. Solar activity also effects accuracy. Only military gps Is dead accurate.
Love finally the HR tracking us spot on, but you never see you ever test walking steps accurately. We are all not into running, but walking
I checked to see if my TH-cam settings weren't set to 2x playback speed😂
No data export, no deal.
Open standards mean your data, and you are not trapped.
The ultra have a great gps.
Agreed. The regular 7 doesn't but the Ultra does. Feels like Ultra for GPS and Google for HR.
I can’t wait until the phase “I’m getting a solid 2 days battery life” is never spoken again
Even if it gets 5-day battery life, you'll eventually still have to recharge it
Charge it when you shower
I charge mine when I shower and don't think about it otherwise. If you configure some of the settings to preserve battery, you can get 3-5 days battery life out of the larger size PW.
Market minimum battery life standard is 2-day now, Apple Watch is still 18-hour…hope they are just being over conservative.
using two devices to check heart rate accuracy but then only one to check gps accuracy and saying it is inaccurate seems a bit disingenuous
With the new silicone battery 🔋 technology, it is completely possible for manufacturers to put 600-700mAh batteries in their smartwatches ⌚ in addition to using the new Dual processor architecture and thus offer us smartwatches with a minimum of 5 days of battery life, but in fact, they don't care, Sheep 🐑 consumers will continue to buy, so why bother 🤷🏽♂️

@@HouseMusicAllNightLong Yeah especially the Fenix 8 is crazy expensive. And riddled with bugs!
Also Coros delivering more value on what Garmin used to do best.
a bit unfair to say that samsung hides features behind their ecosystem and google doesn't.
@@pascalz9992 if the camera control is Pixel ecosystem only, that's pretty lame. I'm incidentally pretty heavy in their ecosystem but I don't want them to be like Apple. I'd think there could be third-party apps that do the same? Or side-loading the Pixel camera app to your phone could work too, lol.
nobody reviews this watch for swimming... i hate how basic it is. i Can't view my HR while in the swimming workout mode. I can't view how many laps i did. It's useless.
I have the same experience. I swam with the pixel watch 3 and noticed the metrics were lacking. I don't really need to view all the metrics while swimming. But it's good to know the time. When I finished the workout, it didn't really provide any metrics to view afterward. All he gave me was a time and an approximate distance. A little lame.
one and a half hours of cycling with the gps and listening to a radio on cellular and i spent 50% of the battery . unacceptable !!!!
Treutel Lodge
Fitbit peaked with versa 3 😕
Could the reason heart rate from the watch matches the strap heart rate be because it’s reading data from the chest strap? Also doesn’t it only work with android phones and not iOS?
The strap works with all apple watches, and almost no android watches. So the opposite is true. Obviously, since we have 2 different graphics, the strap was not connected to the pixel watch 3.
Great! Is there a version for men??
Those little GPS quirks are very odd as you mentioned.
meh...😅
When do you think we'll get a Wear OS buttplug? I imagine itd have incredible heart rate, but shitty GPS.
Oh, good for you.
This feels like a rushed review from Ray. It's not as thorough as I feel he normally is.
Or there’s not as much content on this watch
