Supposedly, Zorro was inspired by a Mexican miner turned outlaw named Joaquin Murrieta. Murrieta was semi-legendary figure sometimes called the Robin Hood of El Dorado. Joaquin Marietta would meet his end in a gun fight with a California Ranger named Harry Love. It is said that Harry Love decapitated Marietta and brought his head in to collect the $5000 reward. Seems the Mask of Zorro took some inspiration from that story.

This is PG-13 rating, you can get a lot more, like more profanity, and nudity, other than violence. Nowadays even a G rated cartoon film can get a PG-13 rating.

I can recollect when I first saw The Mask Of Zorro on TNT when I was younger (and in subsequent viewings on TBS later on), this whole scene was edited out most likely due to its macabre mood.
I therefore was completely astonished of its existence when I saw it on DVD at the house of a couple my family stayed with for a few weeks.
The husband was chillaxing and watching this but paid me no mind whatsoever in sitting to watch along with him.
This scene establishes the total depravity of Captain Love.

The actor playing Captain Love would go on to play another villain who thwarts a masked hero...The Reverse Flash. In the Flash TV pilot, the actor appears as Eobard Thawne before taking on the disguise of another man, played by another actor. Thawne would later drop that pretense and the Love actor would return as Thawne in several of the Arrowverse shows.

I remember this scene from my childhood like it was yesterday. Such a scary, but brilliant scene, you could cut the tension between Love and Alejandro with a knife. I saw this movie in my local cinema when it first came out, and I was 11 at that time. Way too young to see these types of scenes but back then, at least in my country, age restrictions when it comes to watching movies weren't taken that seriously, and no one really expected a scene like this anyway.
I remember having nightmares 24/7 and seeing this head in the jar right in front of me, no matter if I have eyes closed or open when the darkness filled my bedroom every time my mother turned off the light because it was bedtime. I also used to go to my parents bedroom to sleep with them when I couldn't shake this nightmare off. My parents always felt guilty after, for taking me to the cinema to see the movie but ofc, as I wrote, it wasn't their fault, no one expected a scene like this in this movie.
Eventually, with time, it all passed but this scene stayed with me forever and is more proof of how brilliant this movie was/is. Unforgettable with a perfect mix of action, adventure, love, and emotions.

I am sure Captain Love already knew about Don Alejandro. Imagine Alejandro was not Murrieta's brother and he went and complained to Don Rafael how his captain treated him and how he is a sick man...he really had to be sure about what he was doing! BTW, this is the very first and only time the captain laughs at Alejandro's joke!

What always impressed me was how Alejandro kept his cool. You could see the shock and anger in his eyes, but then you see him restrain himself, and get back into character - that of a pampered aristocrat.
I think Diego would've been very impressed by Alejandro in this moment, and feeling tremendous compassion for his student.

The sadistic laugh and the warning he gives to Alejandro. It’s like he knows but he’s not sure. But that’s where your going to end up. “He has a brother out there who will share the same fate “
    Brilliant character and scene!

I am still confused by this scene, even after having watched the movie over 10 times... If Captain Love was that suspicious about Alejandro, why didn't he take action or at least report it to Rafael? It seems to me Rafael first knew Alejandro was Zorro when he recognised Diego. Yet when Alejandro was fighting Love at the mine, Love says: "You're doing well, your brother would have shot himself by now", implying that he knows Alejandro is a Murrieta. The only explanation for me would be that Love knew he was a Murrieta, but had no suspicion of him being Zorro because it was still mainly a legend. Therefore both Love and Rafael connected the dots when Diego revealed himself.

    • @paulfienga9466

This is one of my favorite films I have seen this film like 100 times and studied it I understand your question so Raphael recognized Diego at the party when he pretended to be alexandro servente you could see it but there was no risk for Raphael because he was older and looked tired so what was the point that’s why he said to Diego when he had the sword on his neck you were not the zorro I saw last night that was your master Don Alexandro knowing it has him at the party with Alexandro even Diego right away confirmed it.
For Captain Love at the dinner party Alexandro played the part of the gentleman a bit too much when even Captain love was like 🙄 but he didn’t know him yet he started to connected the doots when Alexandro approached and smiled at the legendary 3 finger Jack were no gentleman would even dare or care to give 1 sec to a dead slave and especially when he asked captain love if there was something amusing to say to him I ain’t impressed with you killing him that’s when he blew his cover and the look of captain love 1 sec later 😮 like wait a minute.
He was 98 % sure that something was not right about Don Alexandro in this scene but captain love has a different method than Don Raphael he wanted to prove himself it was a chess match he nedded proof because remember Don Raphael doesn’t care that much for Captain Love so he wanted to crack Alexandro mentally buy doing this so he would get made for him and lose his cool to blow his cover and reveal himself to captain love that he is the mujireta brother because he knew no way will he pretend when I show his dead brother head in a jar but Diego trained him well witch the reaction of captain love was like shit this guy is tougher than I thought.
For the Zorro part well Zorro hasn’t showed up in 20 years and Diego was way too old so for them nothing to worry about their plans but Santa Anna was way more of a threat to them you could see it they were terrified of him but when Zorro showed up it all made sense a young Zorro same size as Don Alexandro showed up around the same time when he meet them plus the master of Diego it must be Don Alexandro and just to confirm it even more the M for mujireta in captain love face that was to shove it in his face like I’m gonna make you pay to what you did to my brother don’t think I forget the head in the jar you wanted it you go it.
The desk scene was not the time and place but the mine and the palace was so the final reveal was there giving the satisfaction of captain love look saying 2 brother one dead and your doing well your brother would’ve short himself by now.
Don Raphael and Harrison Love we’re not stupid they knew but the plan of Diego and Alexandro was to get revenge that why when Alexandro told Diego how can I do what is needed when all I feel is hate Diego was like ok now let’s go to buissness and finish them.
      Hope that helps.

@@paulfienga9466does Raphael recognise Diego at the party? Remember what Diego says, Raphael thinks himself a true nobleman he will never look servant on the eye. He also invited Alejandro into the meeting at the party with the dons. @@mf289 well it’s quiet interesting when he saw de la Vega at the palace with the sword on his neck he did say you were not the Zorro I saw last night that was your master Don Alexandro witch he connected the dots that the man who was his servant was him and with Captain Love you must not forget he can’t stand Captain Love is on very thin ice with him he can be replaced at any time witch is why you see Captain Love trying to be the best in terms of authority witch he isn’t succeeding as much as would Montero would like him to be.

      @kevinderoo3880 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@paulfienga9466 I realized I never answered your comment, haha. Since I rewatched the movie this week, here I am again wondering what's going on in this scene. I completely agree with you that Love was playing a game of chess with Alejandro. During the dons' visit to the mine, you can clearly tell that Love was keeping an eye on Alejandro and became very suspicious when he approached Three-Fingered Jack. However, I disagree that Montero recognized Diego during the party, because he already should have known about the new Zorro due to the carvings Alejandro left after stealing the horse. So if he knew, he should also have known that it was probably Diego, or someone trained by him. Inviting Alejandro to the meeting would therefore be plain stupid. Besides, when Diego confronted Montero, it was only after Diego spoke about the scar he left on him that Montero said: "You were not the Zorro I saw last night. That was your master, Don Alejandro". Either Montero recognized Diego as Alejandro's servant, or he recognized Zorro to be Alejandro the night before.
But anyways, I think Montero was completely unaware of Diego's existance/survival until that moment. And Love did not report Alejandro, because it was a game of chess and he wanted to prove it like you said.

Is it some sort of alcohol that Captain Love is preserving the body parts in? Also, props to Love for lifting the head jar so easily, it must be quite heavy and fragile.
