Anthony Hopkins gives serious Obi-Wan vibes here. Fabulous.
Still convinced to this day that this scene inspired Batman Begins >>>>

No it wouldn’t because they would make him the fool so a woman can take over as Z…
Not if it’s a Tarantino film. Django/Zorrooooooo!!!!
@@spleefthedude7747
hmm... You seem like you have a petty problem with women. ...How old are you?
If only Star Wars could’ve taken notes from this movie. Or heck, even Creed. At least they showed how to do a proper ‘passing of the torch.’
"Be weary of the old man in a profession where most people die young"
Be wary of him too :P
@@peterbrown3404 I suppose both work, in the long run.
Beautifully said.
Good one. I always liked, "Beware the man who wields but one weapon"
Omg so original! xD
"The pointy end goes in the other man."
He's not wrong.
Still my favorite line of the movie, I can't watch it without laughing
This is going to take a lot of work ...
Yep everyone assume that sword is only for stabbing people
@@Saberblast58 that's why Sabre is the most realistic form of Fencing : it features both thrusting and cutting , and the target area is everything from the waist up - front and back ! ! !
At the end of the movie, the pointy end did go into the other man.
"The pointy end goes in the other man." I love how Hopkins' reaction is one of "He's clueless, but at least he half-understands."
I love how Alejandro isn’t like most students. He’s not impatient, he doesn’t question everything De La Vega is saying, especially how he won’t fight, and what happened to him. He’s eager to become Zorro himself and is a quick study.
Zorro was everyone’s hero. Ofc he’d hang on every word the famous Fox would say
Except several times he lost his patience and try to charge De La Vega and then defied his orders, donning zoro to steal a horse... He doesn't backtalk. He simply try to kill him several times.
Hilariously tried.
@@ajwatcher but every time, he learns, and that’s what matters.
@@huydang5955 But to actually become Zorro is a long process demanding a lot from it's embodier.
@@ajwatcher he only attacks ones and that’s only after getting literally whipped. Other then that he listens to his mentor and his mentors expresses to him “you have passion and your skill IS growing.”
Diego was a great mentor. He was tough, yet gentle when needed. He reprimanded when it was appropriate, but also gave sincere praise when Alejandro did right. In many ways, he was like the father Alejandro never had, as both the latter and his brother grew up as orphans.
Yeah and you can see that he really approved of him as a son in law and wanted him to take care of his daughter when he passed.

Never mess with an old man in a profession where most die young.
Yes because they left the figth at time. No old warriors all live figthing, they dead.
This movie had just the right amount of campy.
As always, watching Sir Anthony Hopkins is a pleasure.
i cannot imagine how these 2 could be any better cast.
I didnt even realize this movie ran for more than 2 hours. Thats how good the movie is.
This was a criminally underrated movie. For me, even the fact that the original Zorro was plated by a classically trained, **British** actor did nothing to diminish my enjoyment of it!
At least it wasn't like Sean Connery trying to pass as a Spainard.
@@ajdominguez1002 Aaaaaah, but if you remember, Ramirez wasn’t *actually* a Spaniard. He was Egyptian.
It's just cool that back then the main thing that counted in the movies was if the person was good in the role.
@@ajdominguez1002 Or a Russian submarine commander. Sorry Lithuanian.
@@hamanu666 No director ever dared to demand him to speak in some other manner. Connery was great actor, but kind of limited in repertoire of his roles.
Banderas really sold the scene. Really good.
Id love a third Zorro movie with Banderas taking over the mentor role and training a new student, itd be a nice full circle moment.
How would it go?
Ooh, another fandom revival like Puss in Boots?
New Zorro would be a 13 year old girl that would already be an accomplished and talented swords fighter/ gymnast/ horse rider and she would end teaching and saving old Zorro no less than 3 times by time the credits roll.
@@Wolfman7870 Well played.
I totally forgot this is 2023 we're talking about, oh don't forget how old Zorro would be reduced to a grouchy old buffoon
@@matthewrooke819 he trains his son to take his place, that's the best way I think.
There is just this air of elegance around Anthony Hopkins.
"Captain Love doesn't exist until i say he exissssstssss..." my god what a beautifully buttery voice and command of that voice
- He is trained to kill. You seem trained to drink [...]
- I would have found a way. I have never lost a fight !
- Except to a crippled old man just now.
Diego's roasts are the best.
As a HEMA practitioner and someone who's fought SCA rapier and cut and thrust for almost 20 years...I love this stuff
90s movies are such timeless gems
The casting director sure deserves a high praise I mean Antonio Banderas getting his ass kick by Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones as a badass damsel. This movie is freaking Awesome. Please I begging for no remakes this movie is perfect just the way it is. I’m ok with the sequel just because I love that kid Joaquin he’s freaking funny. If in the future Antonio and Catherine want to give one last fight for all times sakes, that would be a blessing. If not then no one touched this masterpiece no remakes no series no anything. We have very little of movies and shows they haven’t screwed up with remakes this movie is one of em please don’t screwed up this one. Zorro will forever be legendary and have a very special place in our hearts❤️💯🥂
An unsung classic this movie needs so much more praise and remembrance
I love how this movie incapsulates Alejandro's love and superhero esque style that well all know and love for Zorro. When Alejandro says, "...you fought 100 men!" in the sense of that nostalgia and then Del la Vega goes, 100 men? in the sense that the old times are not really what we imagined them. Sure Zorro whooped a lot of ass in his day! But fight off 100 men at a time, even Del la Vega has to rebuttal that isn't what happened, but in the eyes of a child or the ones who needed a hero, Zorro fought 100 men on a daily basis and cleaned their clocks like nobodies business.
Probably would have been thinking, "I may have been chased by 100 men, but I certainly didn't fight all of them, that's crazy talk."
The pointy end goes into the other man..... classic XD
And the look Zorro gives him....
One of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies, a classic passing of the torch where the elder finds a student to pass his knowledge to and raises him up from rock bottom. Excellent story.
What eloquent speech. Anthony Hopkins is spellbinding when he submerges himself into a role.
Great scene that shows no one starts out the greatest in anything. They have to put the work in.

@@TheGreatDearLeaderJimPickens preach .
If only it stayed that way
Fun Fact : the words , KUNG - FU actually mean , HARD - WORK , and the original Chinese characters are meant to depict a Man sharpening his sword from early in the morning until late at night
The whole casting for this film is perfect
Shows off, proceeds to get showed up.
For as someone who grew up with what I call a check in check out father I see the vitality of having a father figure like this. The type of father who gets involved and trains you to become what you need to be to do what you need to , to live in this life. To father's and future father's out their or guys who have a kid in the community who look up to you as a father figure this is how it's done.
Ahh... the movie that brought Catherine Zeta Jones to my attention
this is how Like and Rey should have been interpreted, not like a sad old man and a Super Mary Sue
'With each new circle your world contracts, bringing you that much closer to your adversary; that much closer to retribution.'
This in my opinion is one of the best movie scenes of all cinematic history. If fate deems it not, then it is my truth only, ONE OF THE BEST MOVIE SCENES OF ALL TIME🎉❤
(chef's kiss) Ah, by all the Flamin' Hot Doritos, they just don't make movies like they used to.
No CG, no shaky cam, just quick-handed choreography and pithy one-liners.
I remember watching this movie for the first time as a kid and falling so hard in love with Catherin Zeta Jones as Elena
She's not that good looking 🙄
Like Anthony Hopkins she's from Wales- and in small patch where Richard Burton was from too.
"Do you know how to use that thing?"
"Yeah, the pointy end goes in the other man."
"This is going to take a lot of work."
My ribs
one of my all times favorite movies, watched it almost daily as a kid
Growing Old by the way of the sword is both a great honor and achievement on its own.
Story of my life. Truly.
🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨
The way they did that whole scene, and the reveal of him being Zorro. Fuck that was a good movie.

Amazing film. But I actually just noticed something funny. When Zorro disarms Alejandro and catches his sword, watch closely when he initially does it. The sword actually falls behind Alejandro then reappears above Hopkins for him to catch. A clever edit that's hard to miss since it's literally one or two frames.
Such a great movie, a classic
I swear, Anthony Hopkins has been an old man for like 25 years
Some people look 60 when they're 40, and continue to look 60 when they're 80. E.g. Patrick Stewart.
I loved Alejandro's Arc. He went from petty criminal, bumbling buffoon, to a a charming man, to a noble hero who avenged the honor of his brother
love this movie

😏 *I LIKE THAT PART!* 😼
It's amazing how this film would later help Antonio gain a role that he would become synonymous with, had he not played the role of Zorro, The character of Puss in Boots from Dreamworks might be the way he is portrayed these days
L pfp
When was a child, I really loved El Zorro for he was a great hero and my name is Diego.
I love the analogy of the circles and maybe Im wrong but I think it could be also a reference for Verdadera Destreza española since the movement of the feet is in circles.
Timeless masterpiece
“The greatest swordsman who ever lived didn’t have a sword?”
"Your friend's dead, and Meryn Trant's not, 'cause Trant had armor, and a big fackking sword"
Someone's said it before and I'll say it again. Luke & Rey in the sequel trilogy should've been something like this.
That honestly would have made the sequels a far better trilogy
I've seen this on TikTok, and apologists tend to respond with "it wouldn't have been original". Like btch, Star Wars is a complete retread of Flash Gordon and John Carter of Mars. If it makes for a good film, who gives asf
So sad they cut the final line of dialogue before they cut to the lair, when Alejandro whispers, 'Zorro?' goosebumps! This edit robs us of that dramatic punch to the feels... So they did the mask, then the legend think they will ever do a third one? What would it be called? The mark? the Son? Discuss!
That's because that line is only in the director's cut.
In this day and age it would be his daughter while his son is written as a pussy.
If Hollywood ever remakes this, I am taking up arms.
What if they remake it with Banderas as mentor training a new Zorro on a quest of revenge of their own?
@@selkiara1272 You mean another reboot/sequel that nobody asked for that comes a thousand years too late? Same shit, no thanks

Luv the lesson between the 2 here,w/ diego saving alejandro 2 b a an upright person. Later, alejandro, now reformed, redeems diego, whose longtime anger & eagerness 4 revenge was consuming him as he went 2 retake his daughter & kill rafael. Basically,2 souls who save each other from destruction.
We need Zorro to fight Tyranny in the USA today.
Thank you saber
underrated movie this was!
It's like Darth Vader versus Luke in Empire Strikes back. Except this older experience swordsman lets the young boi keep his arm LOL
"No you seem trained to drink" is a burn
In many versions of Zorro stories Alejandro is the name of Diego's father so when he heard that name again he stopped for a moment

"stick them with the pointy end"
Damn dude. That crippled old man kicked yo punkass twice in a second. 😂😂🎉
4:57 Me trying to remain enthusiastic verses the realities of life.
There is no need for a Batman Beyond movie its called The Mask of Zorro which is already a better superhero than nearly EVERY superhero movie.
When films were truly exemplary. Especially the writing.

It sure feels nice watching a movie from a time when people were more *enjoy* and less *complain*
yet here you are, complaining.
@@dmanning4114 Not sure how you read *complain* in my comment. Good thing i don't care to know.
@@GuardianGrarl Complain: express dissatisfaction or annoyance about something.
Is that not exactly what your comment is?
@@dmanning4114 No. My comment literally started with *It sure feels nice*. Stating that something causes pleasure.
@@GuardianGrarl @Dimitris Kalergis my guy, you made a statement that is contrasting two things. By logical deduction, if you contrast two things, then make a choice vs those two things, you are also showing dissatisfaction with one of the choices by not picking it. It's common sense.
If I make a statement of Coke vs Pepsi and I choose Pepsi, and say, "Pepsi brings me pleasure" there must be SOME dissatisfaction with Coke hence why I didn't pick it. You contrasted with how things currently are, vs the past and made a statement of choosing the past, thus showing dissatisfaction with how things currently are.
Whos taught!: )
The villains honestly stood no chance when Hannibal was training Zorro.
How Luke SHOULD have been in TLJ if they actually made Rey headstrong and flawed.
Do it
How did Diego recognize Alejandro simply cause of the medallion? I met people who have exactly the same stuff I do. Or did people have custom made jewellery back then? And Diego's was unique?
Diego trained at a military school in Spain both before and during the events of the curse of capistrano, if i were right the medallion is similar to a badge or an achievement patch showing that the owner is a master of fencing.
@@zachbishop9839 I had no idea. In some versions Diego went to college. Not military school.
@@akotostotos9619 My understanding, especially back in the day most colleges where for nobility and the wealthy. Nobility where taught some military officer training as a matter of course in these colleges. Fencing was very important for a Gentlemen to know.
