I was born in Bethnal Green. I grew up on Pie and Mash. Always have liquor. 😊 You could also go to Bethnal Green Underground. Get the number 8 bus from there going to Old Ford. Takes you right to Roman Road Market where the pie shop is.
Really weird you have put this up today. My 92 year old Londoner dad, now living in Sussex, has literally, about 10 minutes ago, had DPD deliver him 4 pies, liquor and mash from Manze and we are having this for dinner tomorrow. He has even got chilly vinegar and Sarsperello (probably spelt wrong) We only realised last week that they did deliveries nationwide and it is all made fresh the morning it leaves them. Dad grew up in Walthamstow and was brought up on this food but has not had it for decades. It will be my first time as it will be mums. She grew up in Stockwell but had never had it. He has also gone for some stewed, not jellied, eels but I am staying clear of them as I grew up in Essex and I prefer batter on my fish with chips on the side. As always I love the content of your channel Darren, and the McMaster as well. Priceless stuff.
My first ever job was as a saturday boy in G.Kellys. 'Mind your backs please' as I carried the trays of Pies through the shop. I live fairly close by and still eat in there now. Great grub and even greater memories. Love it.
Thank you so much for your nice comments on my video last night. It means a lot to me and my partner just to say thank you and I do enjoy watching your videos and your channel you do fantastic content. It’s very interesting to watch and it does cheer me up 👍👍👍
Great food vlog DJ from what is a proper traditional London grub as you stated Darren. My mother, whom hails from Lewisham, always recollects her days living in London through the 1950s early 60s and that this was always a traditional hearty meal for the family. Some like it with jellied eels but it’s best as you have it here with liquor. Good on your son Luke to give it a try and thoroughly enjoy it.
Nice video Darren. Pie and mash with liquor appeals to me as a Scandinavian raised on meat and potatoes. I always have this dish when I am in London (which is too seldom nowadays unfortunately). Too bad that the young generation don't fully appreciate this London working-class heritage food - Luke even dipped his liquor sample in gravy (double-dip) before he tried it....:)
I have probably tried every Pie Mash Shop in London over the years and this one is up there with the best. Not many remaining now but Leyton is a favourite of mine as you can also buy the Pies frozen to take home. Chapel market and Exmouth Market are a great loss for PM lovers and I am still heartbroken the one in Dalston closed and that was over 30 years ago... My local Hoxton has gone a bit downhill so I avoid that one now. ----- Thinking about the good old days at Walthamstow dog track now ☹-
I love pie mash and liquor. I left London many years ago, and at that time I had lived in London for more than half of my life. Living at that point in East Ham I wandered into a pie and mash shop after doing a night shift. It was, and is, and probably ever be the best fast food in London.
