How To Replace 3-Way Light Switch Pull Chain Control On Ceiling Fan | DIY Home Repair Fix By Aiman

  • In this video, young DIY'er Aiman will show you how to remove you old, broken or malfunctioned 3-way circuit pull chain light switch that control the lights mounted onto your ceiling fan. The procedure is the same if you want to replace the pull chain switches which control the speed of the fan. It is actually not too difficult if you can follow simple instructions and have basic handyman and electrical tools available. You can get the parts fairly inexpensive in the light / fan section at your local hardware stores such as Lowes or Home Depot, or you can simply order them from eBay, Sears or Amazon.com.
    The following instructions are only if you're replacing the switches for the fan, since the video did not show how to replace the fan switch, otherwise, for the light switch, just follow the instruction in the video.
    Remember to always turn the electricity off at the circuit breaker before performing any work.
    Open the switch housing of the fan. This is usually achieved either by removing two screws on the bottom cap of the switch housing, or three screws on the side. Remove the pull chain assembly by unscrewing the brass finial on the outside of the switch housing.
    Make careful note of which wires attach where to the pull chain. The chain itself will be marked L-1-2-3 or A-B-C-D or similar, the wires will customarily be of different colors, but if not, mark both the wires and pull chain if necessary. MAKE CAREFUL NOTE OF WHICH WIRES ATTACH WHERE. Every fan is different and if you do not make note there will likely be a complicated guessing game. I cannot stress this step enough. Make careful note of which wires attach where to the pull chain. For example: Black - L, Grey - 1, Brown - 2, Purple - 3. Some fans may use only two or three wires, some may have a pull chain with two layers and five or more wires. Regardless, make careful note of which wires attach where.
    Remove the wires from the pull chain. In some cases they may be attached via wire nuts, in which case, remove the wire nuts. However in most fans the wires are inserted directly into the pull chain. Don't make the mistake of cutting them, they can be removed completely by inserting a very small flat head screwdriver into the slot next to each wire. You will notice the ends of the wires are soldered, this is so they will attach to the pull chain.
    Determine the correct replacement pull chain. This is the tricky part. Many pull chains look alike but in fact switch differently. There are a few factors, first of all, how many speeds does the fan have as controlled by the pull chain? Second of all, how many wires are used to connect the pull chain? These will determine maybe 75% of replacement pull chains. Here are some examples:
    If the fan has three speeds and the pull chain has four wires, it is most commonly a L-1-2-3 pull chain. This is a single pole triple throw switch with an off position. It connects the power from L to 1, 2, or 3 respectively, one for each speed.
    If the fan has three speeds and the pull chain has three wires, it is an L-1-2-1+2 pull chain. This is a single pole double throw switch with an off position and a "both" position. That is to say, in connects power from L to 1 or 2 respectively, and on the third position connects to both. This is the same switch used in many lamps to switch on one bulb (or set of bulbs), the other, or both.
    If the fan has two speeds and the pull chain has three wires, it is most commonly a L-1-2 pull chain. This is a single pole double throw switch with an off position. It connects the power from L to 1 or 2 respectively.
    If the fan has three speeds and the pull chain has more than four wires, there are a handful of different pull chain possibilities however most hardware stores stock the most common replacement. This would customarily be a double pole switch with two layers of wires attaching.
    The replacements mentioned above are the most common examples. If the fan does not work with the likely replacement, does not work on all speeds, spins too fast, too slow, etc . . . and you are sure you properly noted which wire connected where on the old pull chain and wired the replacement correctly , then there are three ways to determine the correct replacement switch:
    If you can still switch speeds on the old pull chain, use an ohm-meter to check for continuity between the various wires on the various positions. In most cases the important relationships are between L and the various other positions, for example a three speed four wire switch might be L-1-2+3-3. This means in the first position L connects to 1, in the second position L to 2 and 3, in the third position L to 3, fourth position off.
    Reattach the pullchain to the switch housing and replace the finial. Replace the switch housing cap with the two or three screws.

    You have described a potentially lethal problem with the three way switch project. If a device has 2 sources of electric connected to it, you could have not 120 volts but 240 volts running to it. What I mean by that is each of the sources of electric could be attached to different bus bars in the electrical panel that would mean the light would be powered by 240 volts. There is another way you be miss led you could have a device wired with a method of switching the light off that is called a "switch leg" where you could turn off a light and still live wires in the lamp housing.

      Thank you. I will ask my dad to take a look at this. Maybe I described it wrong. It was the same wiring as before and the unit is at least 20 years old.

    Hi, great video! I'm in UK, I bought a replacement pull chain switch for my fan but it didn't come with the 3 wires included. I can cut the wires from the existing switch to use but how do I insert them into the pull cord switch? There's no screws for me to tighten the wires onto the switch. Can I just insert them and expect them to stay?

    As a certified General electrician, I find this video highly troubling. When misstatements are propagating more rapidly than paragraphsvi start to get concerned about the welfare of both the presenter and those following his instruction. The voltage at which he's working can be injurious, if not fatal.
    I do not wish to stifle the admirable human urge to expand one's knowledge. Experimentation is to be commended, and I engaging it myself, but I would highly recommend that you engage the services of someone with a little bit more knowledge to steer you in the safe directions. I do not wish to spread your video online as I do not believe that would serve a positive purpose.
