      You shouldn't need to add extra soda ash if the shirt is pre-soaked, unless you add a lot of extra ice.

    I wonder if you added a little more dye in the center of the dye area and added two layers of ice if that would have filled the white part of the spiral a bit more. I really like it! Excited to try it. Do you think turquoise or grape from dharma dyes would split colors like your black dye did? Or better black, raven black, jet black or best black? Also, why did you choose that black ? It is an awesome look

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are 22 "primary"/single-component color dyes from Procion. These colors will not split into different colors; and, Turquoise is one of those primary colors. Grape will split; but, if I remember correctly, it has 3-4 component colors versus colors like Oxblood Red and most of the blacks that have 10+ colors.
      I only stock two blacks: Dharma's Better Black and Custom Colours Dark Black. For a solid black with liquids, I usually use Better Black and for ice dyeing where I want splitting, I generally use Dark Black. I haven't tried Raven, Jet, or Best.

    I really like this idea for vertical dyeing - will be trying it for sure! I suspect those soft areas are the HWI, the hot water seems to soften things for me. Love the splitting, I was surprised since you did it below the ice and I have found splits on top of ice mostly. Like the overall effect!

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer ice on top of almost everything when I ice dye. With more patterned designs, it results in much greater control of the final placement.

  • @caitlinelizabeth90
    @caitlinelizabeth90 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love it. Mind blowing that that is just one color of dye?

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and no. There are 22 "primary" Procion dyes that are a single, "non-splitting" color. Then, those 22 dyes are used by distributers to create a palette of hundreds/thousands of colors you can purchase. Most of the commercial black options are made up of 10+ of the 22 primary dyes. So, while it's a single commercial "black" dye being used, it's component colors will split at various stages when ice dyeing.

  • @mattcloud307
    @mattcloud307 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is awesome! I think it would be cool to do that then wash it out and let it soak in a second really diluted color. Or maybe use red and blue together and watch how it splits.

    • @CasualCollisions

      The video published today is of red and blue: th-cam.com/video/D27BxMrcv8k/w-d-xo.html

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every distributer has their own names for their colors. Dark Black is a Custom Colours dye. Each black will split differently as the component colors within the black dye are different. Some skew blue, some violet, some red, some yellow, etc.

      From the black dye. There are 22 primary Procion dyes. From those 22 primary dyes, hundreds of dye colors are produced. In the case of most black dyes, 8-12+ primary colors are used, in varying ratios, and when ice dyed those primary colors split out of the black dye.
