I don't understand why you don't just trim to land on strips and joists? Are you not compromising the air barrier? 1/2 + 1/2 means your screws are penetrating 1/4"-1/8" through into the air barrier.

what if your butt joints land on a stud and youre not able to use plywood for your backing
