I recently installed a 350KW EVGO charger in Nashville. And I work on chargers all throughout TN. It's cool to see more & more EV drivers visiting my service area.
@Jo Technically we could. I haven't signed any NDA's but I think my company has signed NDA's at a corporate level... so I'd probably get in trouble if showed what's behind the charging network operator's curtains.
I also live in North Carolina and my Lightning XLT is currently on the train en route to my dealer (currently on the border of West Virginia and Kentucky) Can't wait to drive it!!!
We have a 2021 VW ID.4 and recently bought a 2022 Tesla Model 3. Your video came up in my feed and it's a really good one. Yes, CCS charging stations can be a challenge but I'm enjoying how good the Tesla SuperChargers are. Keep up the great work. Liked and subbed.
For those that risk taking their pickup trucks out of the city (gasp!), the fender-mounted antenna reportedly provides additional reception range. Google it for more details.
Yeah 320 is definitely not highway driving and also not winter so if you're driving in town during the summer that's when you'll get that haha. My Mach-E during the cold snap a few weeks ago a full charge wasn't even 150 miles on the GOM
It would be great to do a video just on blue cruise. How it handles tight curves, what happens with lane keep assist when driving on “non-blue cruise” roads, etc.
The biggest problem is that you can’t use it like a truck. If you want to tow anything heavy? 100 mile round trip if it’s not too cold. You can’t even leave town to tow because it has no range. Not a truck
It appears on your first stop that you stopped earlier than the truck wanted to and charged more than it wanted in the nav. It wanted to stop more often but charge for less time each stop to keep the fastest charging speeds and minimize charging time instead of waiting to charge to 90%. ABRP native app in the truck would be great.
I think you could have clicked on the EV connect and then click replace and it would have given you other options but for that Walmart went underneath I'm pretty sure that means it's 99 more miles after your first stop not 99 mi from where you currently are
A bathroom at these charger stations and simplify the charging process. On my maverick hybrid, the cold does affect the mpg. The gas motor has to run a lot more for heat.
FYI, the EVgo station you stopped at in Fairview Heights, IL is supposed to have a Tesla proprietary (n.k.a. NACS ) connector. This will come in handy for some since there is no Supercharger on 64 leaving St. Louis to the east.
I have a Better route planner and use a ODB connector to communicate with the car / truck so it dynamically knows the state of charge and updates ABRP. I use this for planing as I need to use the on board navigation system so I get battery rep-conditioning.
If I ever had any interest in buying a Ford F 150 Lighting, this video just squashed any interest. Sounds like Ford has a lot to do to make this a viable vehicle. 45 minutes for a fillup, not interested at all. Having to fill up twice, you have wasted 1 hour and 30 minutes, not to mention the range anxiaty to deal with.
Something really strange. The $20 cost got you a little over 65 kwh of energy, yet you were at 73% battery when you plugged in. With a 131 kwh battery that added 65 kwh would equate approximately half of your total battery capacity which means your state of charge should have been closer to 50% when you plugged in.
Why would anyone want to own a vehicle where you have to program your trip into a computer so it can tell you exactly where to go and where to stop in order to get to your destination?
Wow just to much of a gamble dealing with these charging stations and when you find a station that works it takes way to long for charge up truck is expensive I have zero interest in owning Ev only very happy with the 09 Prius Hybrid I purchased new in 09.
I agree with you that the charging rate should be on one or both displays in the vehicle. What kind of efficiency (m/kWh) are you getting on the freeway? (edit: just noticed that the display was showing 1.9 mi/kWh at 34:13)
I enjoy your road trips, even though they are often frustrating to watch and listen to. For example, you say that you're going to follow the truck's instructions, and then three minutes later you decide that you don't want to do that. You assumed that your first charge would be in Boonville, but it appeared to actually want to stop at the EVConnect chargers in Columbia. You seemed pretty intent on stopping at Boonville, and then complained that it didn't want to stop there. You get frustrated because the interface doesn't work the same as what you're likely used to in your Tesla (swiping left on a charger stop to remove it). You call the software "stupid" and "wonky" when it seems like your frustrations are coming from a lack of experience with the navigation software. Instead of pulling off and figuring out the logic gap and where your confusion was coming from, you give up and start using your phone to navigate to Boonville, which was likely too close for the integrated nav system to consider as a useful charge stop. I get that the details panel for the charging stop in St. Charles didn't say where it was located (7:50), which I thought was resolved in a software update. You may want to check your software version and whether your dealer updated your vehicle before the sale, because I think that was taken care of some time ago in the Mach-E's nav software and I would be surprised if the Lightning was behind the Mach-E in its nav updates. The bottom line is that you're ridiculing the "expensive truck" for forcing you to use Apple Carplay and ABRP when the problem was an admitted inexperience with the software and trying to learn it on the fly. It makes sense that you were trying to extend your experience from your Tesla and apply it to another vehicle, but when that wasn't successful, you blame the truck instead of your lack of preparation before taking a cross-country road trip in a new vehicle. I'll be interested to see if you can iron out those difficulties in your 3rd day of traveling once you've had a chance to figure things out.
Do you remember the comment about not reading the manual? Demonstrating your struggles gives others the confidence to try an EV, so it’s nice to see Dave struggle. He usually doesn’t struggle with navigation in his Teslas, which says a lot about his learning ability.
@@dennislyon5412 I do remember it, and I allow for that in my comments. However, when you run into trouble, RTFM. Dave has had years of experience learning how his Tesla does things, and just days of experience with his Lightning. His experience with his Mach-E is long enough ago that it might not apply to the current software, and he drove that car so little, he probably didn’t have much of a chance to learn it thoroughly anyway. Bottom line, it’s odd to call something stupid and wonky just because it’s different. Once he’s had a chance to understand the logic and methods of the new vehicle’s software, and he still doesn’t like how it does things, then such pejoratives may be applicable. For instance, the nav software in my 2015 Explorer fully qualifies. After all these years, it continues to baffle me how something could be made that poorly, but I have to keep in mind how long ago that software was developed. It was never good, but compared to current technology, it truly is “stupid.” 🙂
@@rusticroads I totally agree with you. It’s amazing how new tech advances from the early days to current, as you mention about Nav in your 7 yr old Explorer. Saw your next video where you say it’s the Extended range. It must not have that update yet or it would be telling you 320 at 100% regardless of whether or not you can get that.
@@jennifercarr6451- hi Jennifer - the range will be updated based on recent driving history, so will give a pretty good prediction looking forward on your trip based on what you just drove. On this particular day, wind and cold and heat use reduced the full battery 320 mile range by about 40%.
2 miles per kwh, and 31 cents per kwh, or 15 cents per mile, which equates to about 20 mpg at $3/gallon of gas. Highway travel in an EV costs much more than driving around where you live (assuming you can charge at home) and local driving on warmer days will also be much more efficient than 2 mi/kwh.
