      Well, there are some female body builders, and muscle weighs more than fat, so it really just depends

    • @parasitoalienigena
      @parasitoalienigena 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yes, unless the girl has a lot of muscle (muscles weight more than fat). If a not muscular girl weights that with that height, she's overweight. The best for a girl that height would be approximately between 50 and 65. But if she's very muscular it could be ok for her to weight a bit more.
      I know this because I'm around that height. 164cm 53kg. I'm not at all underweight, I'm not at all overweight. If I weighted 74, that means 20kg more. I would look overweight for sure.

    I feel like most of them are so shocked because they don't consider that most western people have a different body shape too. Generally speaking japanese girls have more of a straight body shape(theres of course always exceptions), admittedly making it look a bit odd once they put on a significant amount of weight. Western women usually gain a lot of that weight around their chest, hip and thigh area too meaning they can still somewhat get away with a little more. I was 62kg and 158cm when I first went to Japan and when friends asked me, they'd have a "what? No way! I thought you weighed way less" sort of reaction. Not always the case but to some extend, weight can just be a number. As many people have said though, Americas morbidly obese people also have a great impact on that average number...

    Because america has so many races, that’s why the USA height is lower than expected. When many people (and japanese from my experience) think of america they think of white people, which are pretty tall on average.
    You’ve got to keep in mind there’s a huge asian and hispanic population lowering that average

    Canadian here: The main reason for the weight difference (aside from diet to a small extent) is actually genetics. Asians generally are slimmer and have a lighter/smaller bone structure.
    Western caucasian (Europe/Canada/USA) usually have larger chests, wider hips, broader shoulders/frames in general.
    There is also a stronger culture of exersize instead of dieting to maintain weight so we generally have more muscle (which weighs more than fat.
    Overall I think it's unrealistic to compare American hight and weight to that of the Japanese. Especially because many of those interviewees seemed to be trying to apply Japanese standard to a completely different body type.

    Japanese have the impression that Americans look like Hollywood actresses and celebrities. Japanese also don’t know that those actresses weigh more than they think. Taller girls can not weigh 110 pounds and be healthy. Do they think that Taylor Swift is over weight? She’s tall and I highly doubt she’s 110 pounds. Personally I think those Japanese models (height and weight of models should NEVER be used as a measure of perfection) lie about their weight. Not saying that they aren’t super underweight though.

    For the people who wondering if they’re “fat”, you have to keep in mind that the physique of Japanese people and American people are very different and so are our diets. PLEASE don’t make these numbers your expectation unless it makes sense per your body. If you weigh more than the average Japanese person but you’re more muscle than fat, that doesn’t make you obese ( since muscle weighs more than fat etc) Stay healthy!

    There's a reason why american women tend to weight that much it's do to proportions of the body since americans tend to have wide hips, big butts and big breasts. Most of the fat goes there depending on the genetics of course.
    Besides I don't mind the weight it seems fair, I love women with such proportions because you can be comfortable cuddling with them.

  • @GingerTrashPanda
    @GingerTrashPanda 5 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    Something I don’t see enough of in the comments is MUSCLE WEIGHS MORE THAN FAT. If you are athletic and are confused as to why your weight is far higher than the Japanese average, that would likely be because of muscle mass. What we weigh does not do enough to indicate health. Body fat is the only thing that accurately represents whether you are fat or not. Weight means nothing: for instance, 3 years ago I was 51kilos at 162cm. I was 7% body fat which is dangerous for women.

    • @oanastephy
      @oanastephy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree with you for the most part . However 1 kg of fat = 1 kg of muscle . Muscle tissue does not weigh more than fat . It's all about volume . 1 kg of fat looks way bigger than 1 kg of muscle . Weight is merely a guide in my opinion (although no matter the weight and bodyfat percentage you should be careful as it can strain your joints long term ) . You can be 60 kg at 1.60 and wear an extra small if you have a lower fat percentage or a large if you have a higher body fat percentage .

You can't assume that women with average height have also the average weight. For example let's say we have 3 women with the following heights: first-1.50cm; the second-1.60cm; the third-1.70cm. we also know that their average weight is 70. if we make the same mistake as in the video we will think that the woman with the height 1.60cm has 70kg. But let's say we know that the first woman (height 1.50) has 90kg and the third (height 1.70) has 80kg. To get the average 70kg means that the second woman (height 1.60) actually has 40kg. To be a fair comparison this video had to put the average weight of women with average height, not the average weight of all women in those countries.
    I hope someone understands what I said here. :)
    Even so I liked this video.

    I'm an Asian American (Taiwan) with pretty much the stats of the average Japanese person. I think that American girls grow fat in the right areas (boobs, thighs, etc.) They tend to be curvier and more sexy, and yes, the obese people increase the average. Asians do have different bodies (which is why we have a different BMI calculation than the American BMI rating). We tend to have more petite, cute frames. I think there are good sides to both bodies! There's no need to bash any side.
    Of course, this is only the average! There are people who are obviously different from the stats. I think people should understand the beauty of every body shape, and in themselves.

    I think one reason for the lopsided figures on the side of US is the fact that we are so racially diverse, we have people here from every nationality across the globe while Japan is more isolated in that regard so they do not have as much fluctuation in their populace. It would be interesting to compared the tallest vs shortest and heaviest vs lightest among both countries I suspect the numbers will be radically different on the US side while Japan will be pretty close and consistent.

    I think this is a bit misleading, because what people tend to forget regarding height and weight is that different ethnicities have a bit different body structure and it also depends on the climate they grow up in. You can meet 2 same slim girls, same height, but one has 55kg and the other 65 and you won't even know it. Also it doesn't say if the average is made from fat or muscle or both, since 60kilos on fine toned person look totally different than on someone who has it in fat. What would be more interesting would be to show them picture of a slim japanese girl and slim american/european girl with height and weight and then lets see those whaaaaats

I kept arguing with him that I would look sick if I even managed to get there and he kept insisting that it was possible since many girls in Japan weighted that.
    as much as people love to have an opinion about weight and who's fat and who's not. the fact of the matter is, japanese people and "westerners" are shaped differently, have different bone structures and different bone density. so yeah, we weigh more, even with the same percentage of body fat or if proportionally, we look of pretty similar weight.

      Singapore doesn't have a big population from the middle East, Japan, Korea, Mexico, African countries or other South America countries unlike America. If only white people's height is taken into consideration maybe the average would be higher say 166 cm but there are so many people from other countries (countries where average height is much shorter) so considering that average American woman gets much shorter.

    • @izzykyl
      @izzykyl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shayrah3443 I see. Actually, I was thinking that the true average height of a white American/Brit/Aussie woman could be about 170cm, because at least half of the white women from the Anglosphere appear to be around that height. I am a 167cm tall Singaporean man so 170cm can be easily estimated from my eye level.
      Another thing I would observe is that the 'average height' in most countries does not really tally with the heights of the people on the ground.
      For one example, the average adult male height for an 18-20 year old man in Singapore is recorded as 172cm as of the 2002 census, but most of the other local men in my tertiary institute are well above that height. Some of my 175cm tall male friends have even commented that most of the local guys they see daily, are taller than 175cm. My 174cm tall father also agrees.
      Same goes with the women. The 2002 average height for a Singaporean woman aged 18-20 is recorded as 159cm, but most of the local women I see in school are way above that height.
      This "underestimation" also applies to many other countries I have visited. I went to the UK in 2014 as a kid, and I saw a sizeable chunk of local white British women who were taller than my 174cm tall father, despite the recorded average height of a white British woman being about 166cm.

      @shayrah3443 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@izzykyl yes I agree, with what you said about underestimation. It's definitely the case with height census. The average is always approximated to be atleast 1 inch or sometimes even 2 inches shorter than the actual average.
      Like for example in Hong Kong, the average height is shown to be 158 cm for females but I can for sure say that the real average would be around 164 or 165cm.

    More than the comparison themselves I’m quite saddened by the fact that (especially for the women) it was a number that determined whether they would look good or not. Like 60kgs can look so different depending on the height and person and age and so many factors. I preferred the answers that were more realistic like the two boys that they just wanted so,done who looked healthy.
    I live here I’m Japan and I often hear my friends say they’re fat when they’re not. And on that note even if they were fat who cares if you feel good about yourself.

And that's not not to mention the fact that BMI doesn't really take muscle into account (= if you actually work out, like, proper gym stuff, you can weight a lot more and be perfectly healthy and look even skinnier).

    Americans are all so different though. There's so many different races here, whereas Japan is basically homogenous, so there's bound to be drastic differences in the weights/heights of American girls. Also, the build of Japanese girls is different than Westerners, not to mention there's also a lifestyle difference when you look at both countries. Americans don't do much manual labor on a day-to-day basis and we don't walk much unless you live in a bigger city, like NYC (usually we take cars or public transport). I've also found that American food is just more processed, whereas Japanese meals are often cooked from scratch and whatnot. So there's definitely lots of stuff that contributes to all this.

    I don't think that weight and height are a good way to measure "healthiness", BMI is also not the best way to tell if a person is healthy or not. As long as you eat properly and exercise regularly your weight doesn't matter.
    When you exercise you build muscle, which is heavier than fat, so you can be heavy but still fit. And there are also people who can't gain weight as much as they try, so is fine if they're skinny, because that's the way their bodies work, as long as they eat properly it's not a bad thing.
    What I think is bad and wrong is to starve yourself to get to a certain weight, our bodies have their own unique standards and every body is different, two people with the same height and weight can look totally different, since their bodies place the weight differently. And also is very different a body with 75kg in fat than one with the same weight as muscle.
    So stop shaming people for their weight, as long as they take care of themselves properly IT IS TOTALLY FINE TO HAVE WHATEVER WEIGHT THEY HAVE.

    • @David-nt39481
      @David-nt39481 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well yes, but actually no. You are right about height having nothing to do with health but weight sure does.
      BMI's sole purpose is to show if you are overweight or underweight, its kinda useless for people with normal weight as it doesnt include stuff like how we are built that can impact our overall weight, as no one is built the same. But if someones fat they dont need BMI to tell them that as its clearly psychically obvious.
      Also, its is not fine to have any weight thats unhealthy, like you said not eating enough or eating way too much is simply harmful. Being psychically fit is best condition body can be in, and thats what everyone should strive for.

  • @brindlebriar

    It's a bit misleading, because the range is much wider. The heavy people can get very, very heavy - more than 1000kg - but the small people can't get much smaller than Asians. Thus, the heavy people rise the average significantly. But the _majority_ will weight less than the average. Average does not = majority, in this case.
    Also, when Japanese think 'American,' they think white girls. But America is multi-ethnic, and the statistics average all the ethnicities together. Black girls are heavier than white, for example. Thus, the national average for white girls is a bit less than the combined average.

      Caín Yañez I understand what you are saying but generally speaking women in America are usually portrayed as more curvy than Japanese women, obviously there are exceptions (I also mentioned muscle mass as a possible factor). Also with what you have said about weight and height that is about you personally, and I was talking generally, so in effect saying it is not about curviness because of your personal experience (also with you being a man) I feel that you cannot personally state “it’s not about curviness”. Also that other ‘something’ you were talking about could also most likely be obesity in America, since it is such a large issue, but my comment was mostly just about stating other reasons for the surprising (for the Japanese) weight

    • @powerincarnate6783
      @powerincarnate6783 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sophiekay6999 obesity is one of the causes, no secret about that, but I believe there may be other causes, for example a bigger height disparity than in Japan, specially with all the different races you find im the states. Also statistics can show results that aren't exactly what you might expect when you hear it, for example let's say that there is a classroom where students did a test, half of them passed it with 60 and the others with 100, the average of that classroom is 80, but if you ask how many got 80 in it, nobody will amswer.
      But being curvy or muscular is not something I would believe it's the cause, the average girl would not be heavier than a 10cm taller endomorph man who lifts weights due to being curvy or muscular. Remember we are talking about averages, and for a girl to be heavier for one of those 2 reasons, the girl would be an outlier, and thus not statistically important. But yes about what you were talking about Japanese girls being skinnier and less curvy you are right.
