  • For those of us deep within the sim racing community already, the difference between Assetto Corsa and Assetto Competizione is clear. But, we’ve had several requests as to which Assetto Corsa is which, what the differences are and, for those about to purchase the latest release for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, which one has the free upgrade.
Allow us to explain for those who are new to the series, and with the recent hype about Assetto Corsa Competizione, we suspect that’s rather a lot of you.
We will run through the cars, tracks, game modes, online functionality, before a back-to-back comparison in a Lamborghini around Zolder.
Let us know in the comments below if you're looking forward to Assetto Corsa Competizione for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S or Assetto Corsa 2 in 2024. Subscribe for more Assetto Corsa guides, advice and opinion, very soon.

When i first built my sim rig i bought both titles right away. Long story short: years after and i am still on AC and hardly ever fire up ACC. I feel like one very important gameplay characteristic was left out in the video, which is the gameplay itself. On ACC you are pretty much forced to take things seriously all the time. Regardless if you are racing or just practicing, the game is constantly watching over your driving skills and ranking your levels. It doesnt take very long for that to become tiring. Every single time you fire up ACC you get this feeling of being on your way to school where you will write an exam. You constantly need to prove yourself to the ranking system and hardly ever do you get the chance to just simply drive a car and enjoy yourself. And even when that happens, you are always in a GT car at the same few tracks that the game offer. So i only recommend ACC if you are a die-hard gt-racing fan. For everyone else: just go with AC. You can do the same ACC stuff plus road cars, old cars, LM cars, formula cars, rally tracks, road tracks, desert roads, touge runs, mountain climbs, drifting, etc etc etc. From Fiat 500 all the way to F1s...there is no limit. Oh and by the way, when you do find the limits of the game, you can start modding the crap out of it....AC is an absolute masterpiece

I honestly even tried track+car combinations From ACC in AC and they were more fun in AC. Much more fun.
Not only that, I was able to join a friends nord tourist layout server and bomb around with him, set the weather to a moody overcast vibe with fog and then took the drone cam and filmed a beautiful cinematic sunset montage… I didn’t even do it to share with anyone i, I just did it for fun.
Beyond just the driving being more varied engaging and fun there are just so many things to do! I spent 3 hours yesterday trying out different PP filters and taking beautiful shots of the new RSS cars in showroom.
It should be remembered that assetto would be forgotten were it not for the work of countless misdeed and genuinely talented passionate people.
If they were smart, kunios would create the underlying framework and just let people go crazy with it

Fantastic comparison, very helpful for me. I´m just getting into sim racing , I´m starting and already installed a nice rigid rig, I´m not into the table thing, and a TM300 RS GT. Now looking for what game to use. I first thought of the GT 7 , but I don´t like all that staff of collecting cars and getting credits. I want more a racing focus game. From what I saw in this video I´m definitevely going for the AC because of the time attacks and Nordschleife options, both of them I´ve always like to experience. Actually I do time attacks in real life with my Camaro SS 1LE. And also going for the ACC because GT3 and GT4 are the only races I follow, don´t care much for the F1 because they are not real world cars in my view like the GT´s are. Cheers from Chile !!

The best bit about AC multiplayer is racing in old MX-5's or GT86's around some of the world's most famous tracks. I remember joining a classic DTM server with E30's and 190E's and it was such a blast racing them in Mugello. Side by side for the whole lap!
I just wish those servers existed more often. There's too many servers dedicated to the Nurbgurgring.

I'm in the process of getting started at the old age of 70&3/4 years. Fourty odd years ago I campaigned a Mini in European Rallycross and feel I would like to try to relive my racing days.
I'm getting kit together, a used PS4+, new LG 32" gaming monitor and have a used mini PC ASRock X300W Ryzen 7 7800G in the post from USA. I'm still researching steering wheels and am attracted to a low end direct drive model.
I can't spend too much and would go for the old Asetto Corsa based upon your comparison for its less demanding graphics hardware requirement and sheer variety over ACC along with aftermarket modding possibilities.

Exposure to ACC takes a big chunk of reason behind its popularity. After playing GT3s on other sims, despite me liking RF2's GT3 the most and definitely plenty of iRacing GT3 players around, ACC wins in accessibility and quality. It also helps that it's most likely most sim racer's first foray into GT racing these days.

  • @westaussie7648
    @westaussie7648 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Firstly, thanks for that video - great comparison of the 2 programs.
As an Aussie in my mid 70's, and a lifelong motorsports fan, I got a bit more serious about sim racing in 2020 for obvious lockdown reasons. My 20 year old Thrustmaster still worked and I got into Assetto Corsa as a fairly realistic racing sim, not so much a game. I then built up a rig with a new mid-level gaming PC and 27" screen, and with a bit more PC capability got ACC as well. And recently further upgraded to a new TM300 RS GT to get force feedback and a more robust feeling wheel and pedals - huge difference.
I don't really follow GT racing so ACC seems a bit serious as has been mentioned below. On AC I have added some non AC tracks from Race Department subscribers, including the classic Bathurst, Phillip Island and my local Wanneroo Park (Barbagallo Raceway). Nothing beats racing around a track you already know in your head. And I got the set of WTCR cars which is probably my favourite racing category these days. Both of which I can't do on ACC.
So I'm looking forward to AC2 when it arrives, and if it includes features of ACC, best of both worlds. It would be great if one could transfer cars and tracks from AC but I won't bet on that, and it will be a long time for modders to come up with as good a range of tracks and cars, so probably AC will be my goto for some time yet.
    Thanks again.

Thanks for the explanation. - Up until about a year ago, I didn't even quite realize there were two "Assetto Corsa" games, because of the titles being so similar, despite both of them being in my Steam Wishlist, and I kept confusing them or thinking that there was just one game. - I still know next to nothing about "Assetto Corsa" in terms of playing it (I know way more about where it came from and such things, just researching games as I like to do), and I got both games in a Humble Bundle about a year ago. - I just haven't had a wheel and pedal set in many more years (just too much extra cost as a minor hobby), and I wasn't about to play more "realistic" games on a gamepad (even Codemasters their "simcade"-racers like "GRID" and "DiRT" were edge-cases that made it pretty difficult with a gamepad, at least without handholding), so I waited. - Now in late 2023 I've finally jumped on a discount for a set a few weeks ago and it's good to know that these two games are more different than they initially seemed and what I've thought up until now, so at least it's worth having and playing both.
Honestly, this kind of virtual racing is what I've been waiting for since I was a kid in the '90s with my basic Thrustmaster and Trust wheels that still had pin-connectors and simple springy wheels and pedals and vibration-effect at most. (Yes, seriously, those were my last sets before the current one, that's how long I "waited".) - Now we can friggin' feel about every detail and the physics-simulation is close enough to the real thing that actual race-drivers deem it worth to play these programs. - Of course they're still simulations and games, but come on, how awesome is this stuff.

Modding means I can adjust the game depending on my mood, if I feel like a laugh I hop in a kart or lego car, if I'm in a racing mood I can hop in the GT3/4 or F1 cars and if I am in an exploratory mood I can hop in my trusty old Audi R8 road car and hit up the Shutoko revival project. This variety keeps me coming back above and beyond ACC. Lets hope AC2 can bring all these worlds and more together!

I have hundreds of hours into both, for different reasons. ACC is great for GT3 racing with a bit more of a serious side. AC has so much more content and car types to choose from. AC is a much better game when mods are used.
Probably my biggest deciding factor in which to play is the fact that I recently switched to VR. ACC is very difficult to run unless you have an extremely too end PC. AC isn't nearly as demanding.
They're both must haves if you plan to get into sim racing.

Outside of that, it just doesn't feel like you're particularly familiar with the mods or functionality of the original AC. Worth mentioning are all the subcategories of sim-driving which are entirely absent in Competizione, which is exactly why it doesn't interest as many people. I hope AC2 realizes the potential of the original title.

Now if you will excuse me, I am heading out to the store to buy a digital Microsoft store top up so that I can use my new Xbox Series X with my new Thrustmaster TX, T3PA attached to my Next Level Racing Wheelstand, to see for myself what kind of next-generation upgrade there's been done to the graphics department. I really want to get Assetto Corsa Competizione, fire it up, and see what it is going to look like on my LG Oled C8 65" Ultra High Definition 4K HDR. My only wish is to get a new TH8A shifter from Thrustmaster in the very near future and with that said, I think I will going to have a great time with both of these Sim Racing Games, even though I only have got a Xbox Series X and no PC, I am still very excited about the whole new experience that Assetto Corsa Competizione will bring me. 😀

The real value of AC is locked behind a wall of technical knowhow, time, and effort. Out of the box, it makes quick sense that ACC has a significantly better experience to offer, but once you become truly familiar with mods for AC, it manages to outshine its modern contemporaries, even ACC.
More tracks and more cars is definitely a huge deal, but mods go deeper than that. Shader settings, weather conditions, lighting effects, etc all add a significant new feel to the game. But just downloading mods and running them is not enough. All of that requires effort on the user to configure. It is no surprise that a 2013 era game requires some love, but if you do a quick search of cinematic AC videos or a demonstration of No Hesi servers, then its becomes really evident that AC is far more than just a racing game, its a driving experience well worth the time and dedication the mods need. Of course this is all on the pc, as mods are not compatible for consoles, and yes, even on PC, there are plenty of users who simply dont have the time to tweak mods to make the game perform and look as best as it can be, so that should always be a consideration for anyone looking into checking them out.

I own ACC, and I think I might have upwards of 45 minutes on it. I prefer driving stick, and while it seemed beautiful and solid, I couldn't cope with the lack h-pattern shifters in GT3 cars. The lack of mod support killed any residual interest. I am fine with doing my part to fund the continuing development of their games, though. Just because it didn't do what I wanted doesn't mean it sucks or whatever. I just purchased in complete ignorance regarding anything about GT3 racing in relation to cars, specs, regs, etc... I just like driving =]
I do hope their next[?] title is something that can include some stickshift rides, though

Got the same feeling as you. But then bought custom gt3 rim. Cheapest DIY (3mm aluminium cnc plate and 3d handles, then leather wrapped by myself) for my T300 (about 45 USD). And since then having a blast. Even if I am not a gt3 fan at all. Just the custom wheel added so much immersion. That's the first real look alike rim for me.
Quite nice thing is that standard T300 RS rim weights 1173 grams vs 673 grams that custom got. That is with button plate and paddles from T300 installed.

I massively prefer ACC because it actually has cars that can race against each other, even if they're not my first choice for a series to simulate. AC is fantastic, but I basically use it for hotlapping the Nordschleife since most of the content has nothing to race against.

    • @1000sofusernames

    • @jasonmoyer
      @jasonmoyer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@1000sofusernames I have nothing particular against mods, I just don't think AC's problem is entirely a lack of content. It's not a sim designed around running championships with rules and everything, even in the odd case where there are 2 or 3 non-GT3 cars that can race against each other. I already don't touch 4/5 of the cars or more than like 3 of the tracks in the sim when I do run it.
It won't happen, because everyone's obsessed with survey sims that toss as much unrelated crap into them as possible Gran Turismo style, but I wish AC2 would ship with a couple real championships. Have an MX-5 Global Cup thing, a 24HR Nurby or VLN licensed thing, Italian F4, a series of drift cars, etc., and then make the DLC complete sets of things that can race together.

One issue with Assetto Corsa that I have is the car sounds. Sure, they can be improved with modding, but I think that Kunos didn’t do the best job with their car sound recordings in Assetto Corsa. They use flyby sounds for their exterior sounds, which, while it works extremely well in replays, sounds terrible in chase cam. This wouldn’t be an issue for me, as I only really play in interior and hood cams. However, the interior sounds aren’t that great either. There is too much pitch shifting going on with interior sounds and that problem is mostly solved with ACC.

I made the mistake of buying ACC while it was on sale and never looked up the game beforehand. I've played it for about an hour, and I was so disappointed that I couldn't get the same number of different cars and tracks to choose from as in games like AC and Project Cars 2. That ruined ACC for me immediately. I'm unsure if I'll ever play it again because I like variety which AC brings and ACC has none of. My lack of choices bored me instantly. It was my own fault. The game is probably great but unfortunately I was not the intended target audience. Maybe they will come out with another version (AS2) with tons of cars and tracks to choose from again.

I think if you want a combination of both AC and ACC, like more detailed graphics, great driving experience, various cars, events and racing, you could go with Gran Turismo but unfortunately GT is a PlayStation exclusive so you won't find it anywhere except PlayStation. One downside of GT that some people don't like is the driving experience that does not feel as great and realistic as ACC or AC. I'm a big fan of GT since the first GT game on PS1 and then GT2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 (I don't like GT Sport). From my experience of playing GT, AC, and ACC, ACC has the best driving experience, GT is between ACC and AC, and AC is the last. If you want the best experience of playing in VR, then GT is the best option IMO.

I have both and I play both regularly. ACC is the best GT3 experience and the multiplayer is better in ACC as well. Graphics are a little bit better on ACC if you have CSP and SOL installed in AC. Vanilla AC looks much worse than ACC tho, these mods are an absolute must have for me. AC has the best formula experience from all the sims I've tested. It's a shame the multiplayer is so fragmented into so many categories. AC is fantastic when you want to just drive something fun and realistic in a beautiful track. If I want to compete I go to ACC or RaceRoom.

Glad you enjoyed it! That's a very loaded question....
Everyone will have different opinions. For me, I prefer the feel of ACC out of the box, but that also largely depends on equipment. ACC can be a little more forgiving, and I would argue is better suited for entry level sim racing equipments. You can be competitive with a budget wheel and pedals. iRacing requires a bit more finesse, and will come into it's own with higher level equipment (ie, direct drive wheel bases and load cell pedals). With iRacing, the car can feel tricky at first and sometimes the tyre model means you have to be very cautious to begin with, but once you get going it can be fantastic.
No matter what people say and all of the different opinions, they are two fantastic sims in their own right.
