      No she doesn't. She's ugly. Eva Green would be perfect for Lanfear. Obviously they couldn't get her because she would degrade herself being associated with this show, but if you think that middle aged average looking lady is the most beautiful woman anyone has ever see, you are insane.

    With Rand going off on his own at the end of Season 1, it looks like he won't be there in Fal Dara with the rest of the crew. Too bad. I really wanted to see him running through the women's quarters of Fal Dara waving his sword and everyone thinking he's a prince in disguise!

      They took away Rand’s first big show as the Dragon at Tarwin’s Gap. Why not also take away his next big showing at Toman Head too?

  • @rebekkahdavi8493
    @rebekkahdavi8493 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    My concern is, after the show did not give Rand the same involvement with the battle at Tarwins Gap, that the way it’s being structured right now, where Rand is separated from everyone else right at the beginning of season two, we may very well also lose his actions at Falme and that would be tremendously disappointing to me not only because it’s so memorable-to say the least!-but also because of its importance: it’s the reveal of the Dragon Reborn to the world (and also because of its importance to some individual characters, such as Ingtar, Uno and Masema).

    • @onidsen3391
      @onidsen3391 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I rather expect that we won't lose his actions at Falme, we'll just get them combined with the confrontation in Tear. If everyone sees it across the world, having the confrontation with the "Dark One" over Tear instead of Falme ends up with a net effect that is close to the original.

    • @JimMeeker
      @JimMeeker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think we'll see Falme this season. I have a feeling that the set up for Falme will appear at the end of the season with the betrayal by a certain sister of the red ajah.

    • @joetichenor3635
      @joetichenor3635 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I do not thin we will need to see Rand at Falme any longer. It would be needed if they were following Robert Jordan's story but the are not. More than likely Moiraine will end up blowing the horn and be supported by Egwene and Nayneve while saving Rand while Perrin hugs Egwene's dress coat. Matt will be off creating his Band of the Red Hand, a group of raping thieving marauders.

    • @step4018
      @step4018 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If Rand is doing his book 3 arc then we will not see him for more than a few minutes before episode 8, even in the finale he may not get much screen time. His "story" with Lanfear is not going to take up much time / be relevant to the rest of the stories being told. Taking Rand away from Falme will save them ever having to show him wielding a sword. Falme will likely be a win for the girl team though Perrin may be seen running from the battle. Who blows the Horn? Why cast Masema if he never spends time with Rand? These are book questions that will not worry the show runner.

    After watching season one, I feel like using the books to try to predict what will happen in season two is a fool's gambit. There's no guarantee anything from the books is going to happen onscreen anymore. For all we know, season two will be 100% original and all the book plotlines will be dropped. Will Egwene get her storyline in Falme? Will we get portal stones? Will Callandor exist? We just don't know at this point. They might just throw the books out entirely like they did for most the second half of season one. We might look back on prediction videos after season two wraps up, look at all the people supposing book events would happen, and shake our heads.

    Naeblis, I would love you to do a show on the marketing push for WoT. One of the early Rafe quotes that I remember you introducing talked about his love of the series and commitment to the source material. That looks like marketing now. I would like your take on it as you have been core TH-camr for WoT.

    • @hunterhatfield7157
      @hunterhatfield7157 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd also be interested in Naeblis reviewing the marketing; however, I disagree that Rafe's commitment to the source material was some sort of false marketing. Instead, I think many readers still believe that you could turn 15 books into 8 seasons of TV by editing out some scenes and some characters and then preserving everything else the same. Jordan was far too good of a writer for this to work. Taking out material matters a lot to the remaining material. To use a metaphor, many imagine that the books are a double beef patty hamburger. You don't have room in your stomach for all of it, so you take out one of the patties. The result is the same hamburger but not as much of it. This is the show expectation for some. However, Jordan's books are too well-written for that. They are more like a cake. If you take out the butter and sugar from a cake, you don't have the same cake but less, you have flat bread that no one wants to eat. Instead, you have to take the ingredients and make a cake that's similar to but different from the original cake. It's make a new cake or have nothing at all. Jordan was too good at his job to remove half of the material and get the same basic thing. Making a new cake is actually the best way to show commitment to the source material.

    • @ljc6181
      @ljc6181 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you think of the burger Pattie’s as the core story, you can’t cut them. You make choices about the lettuce and condiments. You rework a story around the core values. It was the arrogance of men that doomed the world was a unnecessary change to the core. It’s smacks of marketing and an agenda. Also, I would suggest abandoning the theme that people don’t believe there needed to be cuts. I no no one that doesn’t understand this - the real debate needs to be focused on the choices of what is getting cut. Especially when so much nonessential new material is being added. It is a long tale with great depth; it will be hard enough to capture without adding Perrin’s wife, Stepin’s death, Nynaeve fighting a Trolloc, Agelmar’s sister leading an attack at Tarwin’s Gap, etc.

    • @hunterhatfield7157

      @@ljc6181 It's so hard to know where things are going to go. Worst case: those things you mentioned have no real relevance later, so they took away time that could have gone elsewhere. If that's what happens, then we'll agree. However, best case scenario (keeping things spoiler light for other commenters)...
      - Previously, Nyneave had a block because she was mad. Now, she has a block because she and her bestie almost had their life sucked out of them. That's way more understandable, so Nyneave is less frustrating.
      - With Stepin's story, now not only do we see the danger to Lan and Moiraine more, we see the very real danger to Rand when spoiler spoiler. In the books, you're told the effect, but you don't really see it or feel it. For viewers, they've seen it right on screen. It could increase tension with Rand's story in S4-S8.
      - Perrin fought for book after book about the hammer or the ax. For some readers, this got old. Perrin was several people's fave character early and they gave up on him later. Moreover, he could act unreasonably over Female Character to show up in the next season or two. Now, there's a visceral reason on screen, not just backstory, for Perrin's behaviour.
      - In book, Nyneave follows the E4 and catches up. Mostly what you see on page from that point is her being mistrustful and getting in the way of the kids on their adventure. Some readers therefore don't like Nyneave for several books. By having her get captured and escape, we see already there's more to her than bossy big sister.
      - With the arrogance line, Moiraine could actually be wrong. This is what she thinks happened, but she's wrong. When we actually see LTT in his scene later, he doesn't look or act arrogant to me. In the books, Moiraine is pretty much always right. Do what Moiraine says and you'll come out okay. But later Rand fights with her all the time, refusing to follow suggestions.... If she's always right, we can get frustrated with Rand. You and I read all the books and loved Rand, but I've talked to people who gave up on the whole series largely through frustration with Rand. But if we see on screen that Moiraine is actually wrong sometimes, then we understand that you don't always just do what Gandalf says.
      Now, I'm guessing you'll disagree with some of these decisions in the show. But the point I am trying to make is that -- if these are being done right -- these bits that seem like they are just pulling time away from the EF5 are actually intended to strengthen the stories of the EF5 over the course of the series.

    So far, I have some predictions about season 2: Rand will go to the waste and accomplish nothing. Egwene and Elayne will be tricked to get them to Falma and get captured by the Sean Chan. Nynaeve will go and rescue them. Perrin will continue to be sad and accomplish nothing. Mat and Tom will meet up in Tar Valon and ultimately accomplish nothing. Moiraine will go back to the tower and have more sex and then get caught up in the civil war in the tower. Since she is essentially stilled, she will go with Siuan when she escapes. Nynaeve, Egwene, and Elayne will defeat the Sean Chaan at Falma and recover the Horn. Rand will meet Avienda in the waste, she will tell him 'You Know Nothing, Rand Al'Thor"

    Honestly, I think your revies of the show need to stop using the crux of pulling information from the books. You will more quickly realize that the rules of the world within the show as they are presented are a mess and inconsistent. The same thing is true for the story themes for the first season. Most, if not all, of these are because of diliberate changes. Season two will have just as many deliberate changes so will be just as flat as the first season if not more so.

    8 episodes for Season 1 were definitely too few, but if Season 2 is based on Book 2, they might be enough.
    But then, we have a problem: Book 3 might just need 4 episodes, while Book 4 something like 12.
    I recommend Amazon Prime Video hiring Nae'blis, the Dragonmount guy, and the Bookborn lady as counselors. This choice could dramatically improve the quality of the show.

  • @ljc6181
    @ljc6181 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Also, I think folks need to stop using the number of episodes as an excuse. If you have eight episodes, you make choices based on that. It is not as if he was surprised by this. You limit material that doesn’t fit the plot. There is so much they could have cut (sorry Stepin) for things more core to the plot. But that assumes they had a plot they were following- I’m not sure after watching it again.

      I don't think it's the episode count. They need to focus the storyline. Season one sidetracked too many times.
      To salvage the show, they need to know every minute of screen time is important. Nothing should be added. They should just remove unnecessary parts of the books.
      Season one added a whole warder episode, a Logain side quest, and romance/triangle scenes that could have gone

    • @mikeplatts4455
      @mikeplatts4455 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep - an 8 episode run = complete departure from the books. It'll HAVE to. We must expect characters either merged together or missing altogether, and major storylines simply dropped, with new ones shoehorned in to stitch iconic scenes together. Personally, I'm going to go into Series 2 with an open mind, and even more of an expectation not to see very much faithful to the books, but just to take it as itself and enjoy what I enjoy. The short running time per season was the biggest issue for me from Season 1 as it crippled exposition and narrative - book readers like ourselves are able to fill in the blanks, but what we know from that source ISN'T what we'll see in the series. I'll take each episode as I find it and judge it as a story in itself - another turning of the wheel.

    • @Brassblitz
      @Brassblitz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seriously. It's like "let's change just enough to alienate book readers and do too little to engage newbies". 8 episodes? What the actual fck are they thinking? At least with this adaptation we won't have to wait eight seasons to know if this is a giant waste of time. I'll know next season if I'm done.

    Elayne had blue eyes, right? I suppose that can be remedied via contacts, or we don't really care since I'm pretty sure Lan had blue eyes also. I realise choosing actors/actresses for their eyes is unrealistic.

    My prediction is that Rand will start episode 1 of Season 2 with the intention of going to the Aiel Waste because he has been told he has Aiel parents. Sometime in episode 1, he will come across Selene. Selene will tell Rand more about the Dragon Prophecies and specifically about Callendor. Selene's constant mention of Callendor (or perhaps she will use subtle compulsion) will get him to move to Tear. My only problem with this is how to get Egwene ultimately to the Waste.

    My theory for book 2 and 3 finales in season 2.
    Rand to Tear, horn to Falme
    Finale of season 2 would be the conclusion of both battles with "the dark one" from the books with some gateway/dream hops that occured between Tear and the sky above Falme.
    Splitting up the rest of the gang and what plot points get screentime is tough. Seanchan intro, their relationship to the power, and being pushed back to sea. Horn chase, how does Mat join back up, is the horn blown this season? Introduce Andor royalty, and tie Elayne into plot. Selene stalking Rand, intro of Aiel (Rand was heading east into the "dawn"). Black ajha hunt (this maybe Moraine's role). We need some Perrin time in there as well, probably no Faile.
    Alot of stuff and not sure how it all fits, but like joining 2 faceoffs into one.

    This version of the Wheel of Time is the story of Egwene and Elayne rising to greatness to defeat the dark one. Rand will go mad like Logan and have to be stilled by Egwene and Elayne to save the World from him. In order to save his life Elayne will have to make him her warden because Rand is not strong enough to handle the emotional loss of losing the power he has. Egwene and Elayne will also have to save Matt and Pirren from themselves. The women are the real power and the star of the show. In this version of The Wheel of Time turning Egwene and Elayne are the heroines who will have to train to overcome the Dark One, destroy the male half of the power which is Toxic Masculinity and save their friends.

    My hope is that Rand makes it to Falme, but he loses because he wasn't woman enough to overcome in that battle. The Dark Lord then wins by default, the series ends, and I have no more cases of re-reading the books and finding large portions of the book where I say "this would have been cool to see" or "this isn't the way it is supposed to happen!" and want to throw the book in the Cracks of Doom. Then we can finally dissociate this series from the books and reset ourselves to a place of contentment.

    I belong to the camp of people who don't think they'll combine Falme & Tear. Primarily because of Egwene and Elayne, who must be in both places. But also Mat and Rand who should be in both.
    I think Rand will mostly follow book 2, with some of Book 3 (and book 1?) integrated. Mat will follow almost only book 3. Perrin's storylines in book 2 & 3 are very easily merged, so that'll happen. The wondergirls must be at both locations, so I'm guessing they'll follow book 2 and then book 3. I have no clue what they're doing with Moiraine. But I expect the main locations this season will be Cairhien, Tar Valon, Caemlyn, Falme & Tear. (There's been set-up for all of these locations S1, and from a storytelling perspective we really should visit these locations before ... )

      I agree. I don't think they will squish things that way. It doesn't give enough time to develop Egwene, Elayne, and Nyneave, imo, because Egwene would still need to end up in Tear. Rather, the book 3 plotline in season 3 can be shortened to 4 episodes. Episode 4 of season 3 could end in Tear. Then they start book 4 material.

Same happened with Angel, He was supposed to be only a guest in one episode .. and the network made the showrunner again rewrite the rest of the season ... they wanted Angel turned into one of the main characters... that is the sad truth... Without Covid issues and Barney's leaving, I am still optimistic about the second season except for Rand's storyline. I remember when Rafe first announced Rand's casting by using one of his iconic lines, "It was not about me. It's never been about me." I think the production took this line quite literally and have been sidelining one of the best character developments in the history of fantasy. If they do what they did in season one, he'll beat Ishmael in Falme or Tear by getting help from some side character we met in that last episode and that will be all.

    Moiraine is getting the Lafayette treatment. Lafayette in the True Blood books became vamp chow in the first or second book. This also happened in other books to TV series (( though I am not remembering who specifically in what book to TV/streaming series) They kept the actor on because the viewers loved him. I don't know if the same can be said for Rosamund Pike and her character. She's a great actor, but Moiraine was always less empathetic than Lan.

  • @esorth
    @esorth 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My theory is mostly a merging of the very similar overall plot structures from books 2 and 3. I think Rand to Tear with Perrin and Moiraine/Lan following, similar to book 3 except probably delaying Faile, mixed in with some of their bigger subplots from book 2 (Lanfear, Cairhien, and hopefully flicker, flicker) and some original stuff to give Moiraine and Lan more to do. End season with a merged taking Callandor and fighting Ba'alzamon in the sky (maybe over Tear, maybe just visible in multiple places including Falme). Women to Falme to deal with the Seanchan, mostly on their own as far as major characters go. Mat and Thom, and later the Horn, are the wildcard group that I could see going to either destination, but I think they start in Tar Valon, similarly to their start of book 3. Other wildcards: Sheinarans including Ingtar will go somewhere to do their thing, but no idea where. Whitecloaks will do... something.
    If so, expect anybody already complaining about "unnecesary added content" to mostly hate the Moiraine/Lan content and the women handling the Seanchan on their own without Rand. Those would be the parts with big added non-book stuff.

    • @esorth
      @esorth 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Forgot to add that, of course, the women's plot also includes some White Tower training time before heading to Falme. Maybe also kick off the the Tower rebellion before they leave, including killing off Siuan early, but that might be too much.

    Even though I can't say I liked season one due to many weird choices I still obsessively follow all information about the show... I am not a hater ... far from that.. I am disappointed and my complaining comes from the place of love ... I do love the cast and most visuals from sets to costumes ... editing and writing bother me ... We know that with each book the number of casts only grows in the series ... but showrunners, in my opinion, did not give enough screen time even to the old cast... how on earth are they going to accommodate even more people on the sets with only 8 episodes ... for example Loial ... he is still a random character who barely uttered any words, and when he did, he was cut off by other characters ... the reason for his presence seems to have been filmed but ended up under the knife and left unexplained ... so currently seems he absolutely had no reason to be in the show nor was he developed as a character for any of us to care that he ended up stubbed ... if this is what they are going to do with the rest of the new cast I am already scared ... because that is quite a lot new peeps and they still have only 8 episodes per season! My main complaint about the show is not the changes themselves but the pacing and how much ends under the knife and is left unexplained making no sense ... For me, the core of the Wheel of time was 4 things 1. Prophecies 2. One power 3. Dragon Lore .. 4 dark one .... the show has changed all 4 .....and has not really explained any of these changes properly ... for example ... Does one power has two sides? Saidar and Saidin ??? if in the show they only have one source it makes sense when Liandrin says "when you touch it you make it dirty " !!! And when Rand asks Moiraine to teach him how to channel .. she does not say she can't, she says she won't... to be honest I still have no clue how does the one power work in Series ... it is not clear ... the cold opening even suggest that one power originally has only one source and Latra says how Lews will split it into two if he faces Dark one, Am I hearing this well ??? also regarding Dark one, whilst in the book, Dark one exists outside the time and the pattern and can only touch the world via the hole in the bore ... it seems in the show Dark one is caged here on earth ...
    Shows is not consistent with the information they give, they often contradict things they said and characters often behave contradictory ... Like Moirane says Dreams have power and can be manipulated don't trust anything from your dreams, then she blindly follow instructions from Siuans dreams lol ... Moiraine says to Rand in the blight " Don't touch anything" then they are literally rolling all over the place and having a nap ha ha ha ... It's like they have random writers popping in that don't care at all about continuity!
    The Lore of the wheel of time is complex, deep, beautiful, and precise ... the show is making a mess of it to the point that it makes no sense... and does not even bother to explain it at all ... Seems they are trying to imitate Jordan unreliable narrator style but they are not doing it well because unlike Jordan they don't address the misconceptions they introduced and that makes it only confusing ...

    I kinda wish we got less of Moiraine for S2, with her picking back up in importance for Season 3 (roughly books 4-5).
    The need to push for more Moiraine air time makes me nervous that this show is a Rosamund Pike vanity project rather than a meaningful adaptation of the books.

      @@wolfhawkpk86 I think you are getting an EF5 focused series, emphasis on series, already. However, you're getting 1-4 seasons with a bigger Moiraine focus. Someone has crunched the numbers and Rand is already tied with Moiraine for screentime and focused scenes. Mat and Perrin's arcs for season one were short, but they're going to emerge by end of s2 and s3. Egwene and Nyneave already have larger arcs in s1 than they did in book one. More importantly, Rosamund Pike is the bridge that will get the mainstream audience to the Rand-Mat-Perrin-Egwene show. There's people already calling WoT like a CW show. Imagine if you reduce Moiraine to the teacher of four teenagers and their big sister. That's even more CW like. Such a show might have a strong enough audience to run several seasons, but Amazon is spending a BILLION dollars on this show over time. It can't just be watched by teens and fantasy fans. It has to look different, have big names, pull in broad demographics. We can never get The Last Battle unless millions are watching this show. Fantasy fans in 1992 were happy to read another farm boy Chosen One story and then see it expand beyond. But I don't think you can start there for a general audience 30 years later. WoT has to stand out from that trope until they can fall in love with our EF5, and then let them take over.

    8 episodes are not enough to do justice to books 2 and 3. It’s going to be another season of rushed storytelling with no character building. I failed to connect with any of the characters in season 1, something that should have been next to impossible as I am a huge fan of the books. All the tv characters felt flat and empty to me. When I watch a good adaptation with perfect character creation to match the book, when I then reread the book I cannot help but “see” the actors from said show. However, with the Wheel of Time, I am currently rereading the series and find that I just don’t “see” any of the actors in any of their respective characters. That is extremely bad in my opinion. It proves to me just how far removed from the books that the tv series actually is.
    I will be giving season 2 a chance to redeem itself, but with the news that it’s probably still only going to be 8 episodes, and it’s going to be based around books 2 and 3, I can’t see it working again. Fingers crossed I will be proven wrong, but I only have past evidence of the first season to go on, and that was a massive letdown.
