when I watched this the very first time, I hated what happened, and hated Tig. that POS is the reason why Opie died. and if I were Jax... Tig would be DEAD.
That scene literally broke me, just the pure heartbreak that you see in Jax's face, eyes, and even movement, as he pounds on the glass, knowing what's about to happen. 🥺🥺💔💔😭😭
For me... it is the smile Opie gives before the killing blow lands. Almost a relieved sense of freedom from the club that took everything from him, and that he basically had no way to leave. Donna, Piney... the lies, the betrayal. Opie suffered so much more than he needed to.
@@patrickevans9604yes, he let Chalie Hunnam and Mark Boone, who played Bobbie, do it with a samurai sword. They did it based on a samurai bushido tradition when a samurai warrior relinquishs sword every one who contributed to his career as a warrior snips off a part of his top knot
When Ryan joined the Walking Dead universe I met him at a convention and marveled at just how big of a guy he was. My mother called me and told me if I didn’t get a picture with him she would cry. I spent a few minutes talking with him about his roles on both shows as well as Remember the Titans. I now proudly own a photo of him on his bike, signed “Josh, I Got This - Ryan” I cry every time this episode happens
This episode still gets mentioned by fans as one of the biggest on-screen deaths, years after the show ended. The fans and social media were rocked. This sparked a change in Jax thats felt throughout the rest of the series
Opie was living in purgatory. He didnt view the club the same way he had and he also knew he couldnt exist out in the real world. In a weird way, this was a way out for him.
@anthonycampos8057 I think he really did love her and was hoping it would work but he needed something she wasn't ready to give him and he pretty much checked out after that. He wanted stability and a family with her to balance against club stuff
A really beautiful detail in later episodes is that the three of them who was there with Ope will add a small "In memory of Opie" patch on their cuts. This episode scarred me for a while first time I saw it.
In a macabre way, it was the happiest episode for Opie. He hated life. His club was responsible for the deaths of two of his closest family members. His best friend lied to him for extended periods of time. He didn’t know how to parent his kids b/c he was in prison when they were very young. He got no joy out of the anarchist biker lifestyle. To be attached to a club and to people who have wronged him so horribly was torture in and of itself. There is a very high likelihood that Opie’s kids will live happier, less violent lives without Opie as their primary caretaker. Very sad, twisted end to one of the most loveable and enjoyable characters in the show. The silver lining is that Opie got to finish his time by saving his best friend and Chibs.
So there is a video on TH-cam from after Opie left. In real life, Jax and Bobby used a sword to cut off Opie’s beard! You have to see it! It’s actually super emotional!❤
First time I saw this when it came out I had to go to work afterwards and was literally in pieces but couldn't tell anyone why. Ryan Hurst did a fantastic job and I even got a "In Memory of Opie" patch to commerate this moment.
Bawling.. Opie's death gets me every time. Opie wanted to save Jax, to end his own suffering.. but man.. just.. 😭 Ryan Hurst gave an incredible performance on SOA
Opie was my favorite. After this episode, I didn't want to continue watching TV show. ... but after a week of crying I did. Love the show. My top 5 TV show ever.
This episode changed Jax forever, everything here on out will be completely different. I 100% think this is THE pivotal episode in the entire show, and you’ll feel that as you progress through this show. Fantastic writing and everything, Frickin love this show.
This is the episode that changed Jax forever but I think Gemma’s attack by Weston at the start of season 2 is the pivotal episode in the entire show, it causes so much of the pain and trouble we see up to this point. All the bad stuff up to Opies death can be traced back to that point.
You guys should watch the video of the guys saying goodbye to Ryan on his last day. They all cried. It's beautiful. I think the worst thing about my first time watching this season years ago was that every episode after this one, the "previously on" segment made me relive that last smile and blow to the head OVER AND OVER again. It was really hard to keep watching the series. It's also the reason I've never seen seasons 5-7 more than once despite being one to watch the same shows over and over ad nauseam. I only decided it was time to go through it again so I could experience it with you guys. But I'm putting it off a little longer by writing this comment BEFORE I watch the episode 😂😭
All these years later, countless rewatches… and Opie’s death never gets easier to watch. He knew though, he’d find peace, and his kids would be safe. He was ready.
The crazy thing is that Opie was supposed to only be in for a few episodes but they had such positive feedback about Opie they kept him on until this episode. The thing that I think really broke the final straw was Jax keeping him in the dark about everything
Such a difficult episode it absolutely hits deep emotionally as you said a john snow moment I agree but to see what comes in the future and how they deal with this is yet to see love yall cha 🤙
You guys 😢 my heart breaks for you. 8am and had to watch before work. Seen this 5 times or so and still bawled right there with you Nikki. You guys are awesome! Much love ❤️
When this episode first aired, that final blow to Opie made me jump back in my seat as I covered my mouth and cried. It was hard watching that scene back then and now.
I met Ryan Hurst at a convention years ago. As I walked up I yelled “LEFT SIDE!” in reference to Remember The Titans. Without missing a beat he responded “STRONG SIDE!” A truly talented and kind human being
One of the most heartbreaking television episodes in all of television history. Opie lost everything for this club, and he was a really good dude that just went in a bad direction. RIP Opie😢

A top 5 character death in television history. One thing I love is they didn’t milk the drama in Opie’s final scene. It was over quickly because that’s really what he wanted.
Sons is my all time favorite show, Opie was my favorite character. This is my all time most devastating death in pretty much anything fictional. “I GOT THIS”
as i said as a comment in the last episode.....this episode will take your emotions to the stratosphere......SOA was so good and phenomenally written!!
I just wanna say I've been watching since episode 1 and I have been so scared of this reaction because of how upset I was. Your response brought back so much of mine. Reacting to a reaction got me bawling my eyes out. I love you guys for this. ❤❤❤❤
‘I got this’ three simple words that had a deep impact for the show. Whats even more tragic is Opie wasn’t sad or fearful for the first time in a long time facing his death he was at peace. Eli’s wife was murdered that will bring heat on the club. And Jax twisting Tig to his side that was a move Clay himself would do that the Jax of season 1 never would have done.
Throughout TV history, there are a number of shows that are considered iconic. All of them have one big thing in common: they all have episodes that stick with us. They have an emotional impact on us, on the story, that changes how we view it. We are forever changed because of them. This is one such episode. This is "Ozymandias" and "Felina", this is "Mother's Mercy" and "The Winds of Winter"; this is "Saul Gone", this is "Long Term Parking", this is "Middle Ground" and "-30-". Many people reading this can tell you immediately the show, season, episode, etc. of all these episodes, without hesitation. Add "Laying Pipe" to that list. This is why Sons of Anarchy will always be regarded as one of the best shows ever created, and the fact that it is lesser known than other shows is borderline criminal. This should be reacted to more often.
This one Broke me . I Remember sitting in front of my TV Numb to the Rest of the episode. I couldn't get the moment oppie said "I Got this" Out of my head. Had to rewatch the end just to know what happened.
I met Opie at Bubbafest in pigeon forge Tennessee in 2019. He was doing an appearance with his dad. His father, Rick Hurst, was on the Dukes of Hazzard. Ryan was a really nice guy. He said he loved filming the death scene because he knew it would get a huge reaction . Great episode.
Nikki, thank you for allowing yourself to be that open and vulnerable for us. Steve, my love and respect for you just jumped a few notches higher the moment you checked in with Nikki. I knew this episode was going to devastate you, because it devastated my wife and I when we watched it. Seeing Steve just shut down his usual effusive nature told us everything.
I watched this series when it first came out and your reaction to this episode was one I was really looking forward to. Possibly one of the best episodes of tv ever.
Everyone needs to stop saying Donna 'died'. That would be bad enough, no, Donna was brutally murdered, deliberately, in a gangland style execution, by Clay as a distraction. That needs to be reiterated, Opie's wife didn't just die, she was TAKEN from him.
Every time I’ve watched this episode I’m baling my eyes out 😭 the moment they killed Opi you could see in Jax eyes he changed forever 😢 You guys should watch the send off of Opis Charakter by Charlie Hunnam and Mark Boone Jr. it is really emotional and you could tell how much these guys became friends through the series
This event in SOA was almost as upsetting as the Red Wedding in GOT...This is one of the episodes I wanted to see you guys reaction to and you didn't disappoint, now on to the next... Good stuff...Thanks for sharing!!!
To think, Steve, when describing Pope earlier in this reaction " feels like a Negan vibe " then cut to Opie 😔fuckin' aaaaaaaa Tig was the Daryl of the situation if you think about it, a perfect mirror of that scenario
Still To this day, Seeing the range of emotions from our core prison crew while trapped behind the glass is fucking MASTERFUL and gives me full body chills
For me the big three deaths in all of media I've watched that destroyed me was 1. Glenn, 2. Opie, 3. Rob stark. Their deaths still make me cry all these years later
Since I started watching your reactions years ago, I wanted you to react to this show. Since you took it on, I was sure this was going to be one of the hardest episodes especially for Nikki. Such a great show, such lovable and hatable characters and some messed up fates for those characters. Love the emotion you both have for each and every one of them. In good or in bad...
this i was wating for. and damn thoughs reactions were exactly how i felt. Nikki's just pure emotion got me that scream killed me inside. i was not ready
you can see that ol boy is trying to keep it together while she is crying during that scene. he is fighting back tears and then checks on her. i can see he"s a good dude
This is the most harrowing episode of TV I've ever seen. I know the red wedding is such a part of the pop culture and but I say to those people "you didn't see Sons of Anarchy did you."
I was dreading the day you got to this episode, Opies death was so sad and it doesn’t get any easier watching again years later. Jax is never the same after this.
I give Tig credit for immediately offering to be the one to die. He was willing to die to protect the other three knowing he'd never get revenge on Pope.
In listening to the SoA rewatch podcast with Theo Rossi and Kim Coates.. most of the cast was actually behind the glass when Opie gets the final blow. They had snuck them in during the fight scene, so when Opie falls to his knees and looks up and Ryan smiles.. he sees all the boys. .. and they were all heartbroken 😭🖤
The actor who played Pope was in my 2nd all time favorite show “Oz,” and he was kind of a comedic relief character that guided the audience. Crazy to see him so ruthless.
Please watch Ryan Hurst Says Goodbye to Opie. That explains a little bit how actors in general say goodbye to their characters, especially if they've embodied the character for years.
25:47 Yea that's Ashley Tisdale. At this point in the show they start having a few random celebrity cameos throughout the seasons. Marilyn Manson becomes a big guest star in the later seasons too.
Opie was living in his own purgatory hell when he said I got this I already knew it was his time to go this was really a sad episode especially all the SOA fans including myself.😢

Waaalt !
When yall first started watching this, I immediately was worried about Nikki when this episode came up❤
The girl Clay slept with is Singer Ashley Tisdale. She looked familiar to me also.
“I got this” the must heart felt 3 words of the whole series.
😪😪😪😪😪😪😪😭😭😭😭😭😭😭Ope went out like a hero RIP big guy
The episode i bawled over..RIP Opie, you were a real one.
And this is when Mr. Mayhem won forever in the mind and heart of Jax Teller. He was never the same after this.
I cried 😢watching this episode today , just like I did when I first saw it 😢
Me: "oh yay a new SOA reaction video." Also me: *sees the episode title.* "oh yay we're all going to cry today!"
There are two lines from movies and television that get to me one is "I'm a leaf on the wind..." the other is "I've got this."
Can y'all plz react to the behind the scenes of Jax saying goodbye to Opie...it's a tear jerker
