Hiya Martyn, These where used to syncronize sound with film. The headphone out can be used to book up to a cab and the mag input is for guitar. Can't wait to get it back!. It's very similar to a Magnasync Moviola URS.
That amplifier was part of film editing and processing. Similar to the Moviola amplifier, which was about 4 to 5 watts. These are pricey Littles amps. There is one exactly like the one you have on eBay for like around $500. Pretty mean sound in a little amplifier! The kind I like.
@roncarter2188 Hey Ron, I saw that other one you mentioned, pricey indeed!. I managed to pick this one up for $175. I'm sure you could get this wee thing screaming in no time too!. It is very similar to the Magnasync Moviola URS, you're right.
The 6AQ5A is a miniaturized 6V6 with a maximum rating of 250V; EL90 is the Euro equivalent, and 6005W is the ruggedized military version ---- I have about 60 of them!). Maybe good for 2 to 3 watts in SE Class A, 10 watts in pushpull. The 5879 was commonly used in paging amplifiers as a mic input preamp because it's a very low noise pentode, a little bit like an EF86 but less gain and a different pinout.
That was a white knuckle ride Martyn 😅.. Well worth the time and effort as it has a lot of potential. I have a feeling I saw Brad ( The Guitologist) mess around with something the same or very similar a few years back (pre 2020). . I think he decided it was originally part of a hard wired intercom system.
I should clarify what this amp actually is used for. It is part of a whole set of editing equipment used to synchronize sound with film. Magnasync and Ediquip are the two most well known company's which built these amps with their accompanying units. The Hollywood Film Company brand/logo of the green red and yellow flag can be seen on all the equipment, there's boat loads of the stuff on US ebay. I hope that helps?.
Projector amps like the Bell and Howell models are nothing like this amp. Those pretty much need to be converted/rebuilt into proper guitar amps where as these just need some modification.
For some strange reason there used to be a school of thought of amplifier design here in the US whereby the screen was fed from the first node of the power supply and the plate and output tranny were fed from the second node. I don't know what the reasoning was behind this, and obviously it's not a very good idea ---- especially if one might be using modern tubes of a lesser quality ---- and if that's indeed the case with this amplifier you're better off reversing the screen and plate supplies so the plate gets the highest voltage. Is the output transformer getting overly warm with that big voltage drop across it?

Can't wait to get it back home, I've got an Ediquip 1027A solid state unit that's got a fantastic fuzz tone too!.

Hello. 6AQ5 is a great little tube. I am going to trace the circuit on this one. should be interesting. Take care.

Hello Pete, thank you. I am looking forward to getting this one sorted. It's in a bit of a Que at the moment. So much work. Take care Pete.
Optical / magnetic tape? Projector Amp perhaps?
Hello Alan. Yes, the owner confirmed it was a projector amp. Take care.

Hello. That's worth checking out. we will make that the first thing we check when i get on to it. Thanks for bringing that one up. Take care.
Ha rubber power chords bounce
Not heavy metal power chords then ..😂. Its a great little amp you make it sing
Cheers
Hello Paul. I can't comment on the rubber. It is a great little amp. Take care mate.
Monster!!
Hello Gary. It is indeed. Look out for part two when it should sound even better. Take care.
Alright, Martyn, now I expect you to explain, what the hell is a busman's holiday? 🤔
A Busman's holiday is when someone does for pleasure what they do for a job. It originates from the idea that back in the day a bus driver might choose to take a bus or coach to go on holiday or even a full coach tour. Hope that helps.
Well that saved me a job. Now you know.
Hello, thank you. That's a perfect explanation. Take care.
And no, I havent seen one of these before ---- but another commenter explains below what it was used for.
Hello. That,s the owner. very interesting amp.
I’ve never been fond of rubber either ( probably explains why I’ve been married three times) 😂😂😂
Hello John. I managed to escape marriage. Had a few close shaves though. Take care mate.
@@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher finally found the right one though Martyn . Third time lucky 😉😉
It's my understanding that what we in the States call a "rubber" was once known on the other side of the Pond as an "Englishman's riding coat"! 😉
