Piton de la Fournaise 3/3 - The overflow

  • Third (and last?) episode of the ongoing eruption at the Piton de la Fournaise, Réunion Island.
    One week after shooting many forms of beautiful lava channels , this time was much more a hell of a mess ! Overflowing pahoehoe lava everywhere, coming from a supposedly small resurgence on the eastern flank.
    Lava tubes, lava rivers, lava floods, lava falls !
    (My apologies for the bad quality of the colors on daylight footage. Cameras don't like constant rainfall mixed with extreme heat ! I did my best to find the colors back, while condensation made the original footage look like it was foggy everywhere)

      Thank you so much! I will try to make longer version next times. Maybe a short and a long one.
      I hope you enjoyed my last one, the "skylights" which was almost 10minutes long, and the most complete experience I had.

    I love watching water flow but lava is a lot more satisfying to watch.

    It looks like some of that flow is going -uphill-? Or is that just the camera angle?

    • @drixc1
      @drixc1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you think about the first seconds of the video, it is indeed just the camera angle, you can't fool gravity :)
      One important precision, that flow at the very beginning is exactly the one at 1:51. On that day It was actually the open air source of all the other lava flows you can see in the video. We could approach it from less than 1 meter because it was raining, cold in the morning, and mostly because the heat was canalized by the lava walls built around it.

    Such well behaved lava. Very little gas.

      The degassing activity is actually much more important at the beginning of the eruption, especially the first hours. Have a look on the first video (part one) to see the lava fountains coming out with strong degassing activity ;)

    What is the date of the eruption?

    • @drixc1
      @drixc1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Part 1 was filmed on the 15th of September 2018 the first day of the eruption.
      Part 2 was filmed on the 25th of September 2018
      And this part 3 was shot on the 30th of September 2018.

      Thanks for the reply, I hadn't noticed the date written in the video.
      I've seen all the parts, but I consider this the most spectacular.
      Congratulations on your videos!

      @@PassioneEtna thanks for the feedback, it's always good to know what the people think.
      I'll have a look on your channel, it looks like you and I are living around the 2 best volcanoes on earth! (on a top 5 list, Etna and Fournaise would undeniably compete for the first and second place! Hard to admit but Etna being probably number one...)

      I have loved Mount Etna since I was a child (I'm 33 now). For me it is a very precious volcano, also because it allows you to see many different types of activities, as if they were many volcanoes joined together.
      The Piton de la Fournaise is also exceptional. You are right, they are the most beautiful volcanoes on Earth.

    Je ne sais pas si c'est mon imagination fébrile, mais en première partie de vidéo il y a des moments où j'ai l'impression que la coulée remonte la pente?

    • @drixc1
      @drixc1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      C'est un effet d'optique lié à la prise de vue, du fait de l'inclinaison et du contraste avec effet "ombre chinoise" mais en vérité le plan est parfaitement horizontale. Cette résurgence filmée au tout début de nuit est la même que celle filmée un peu plus tard de jour à 1:51, qui est d'ailleurs le point de départ de toutes les autres coulées par la suite...
