The Embassy Theatre was where "This is New Zealand" first screened once it had finished its six months at the 1970 Worlds Fair in Osaka in Japan. It was seen by around 4,000,000 people in Japan and after being successfully screened in the Embassy in Wellington, it was the screened in Christchurch, Dunedin and finally in Auckland. As it needed three 35mm projectors, it was expensive to screen and was not taken to any other cities in New Zealand. This is about to change however as it has now been digitised and the goal is to once again screen it at the 800 seat Embassy in Wellington, after it has been screened in Miramar's Roxy Cinema. Fish and Chips at the Seaview Takeaways on Lyall Parade in Lyall Bay take a lot of beating and love your energy by the way.

It’s amazing how my old home town has changed! When I lived there from 1969 to 1981 it was a boring bureaucratic place, grey and staid. Then along came a new mayor Michael Fowler who lit a fire under the place. Within a couple of years the arts communities thrived, street sculptures were installed in Cuba street (you have no idea thevUPROAR when those water buckets in Cubs St were installed!) The city has blossomed like a flower since then. It is exciting to see. A big question ... did your burger have beetroot in it?

    • @Kiwiamericans

@@Kiwiamericans haha I guess not. I’ve spent most of my life working and interacting in various ways with Americans. My brother lives in Indiana and my late wife’s sister lived in upstate New York. For a little over 20 years I’ve been doing a weekly radio show that’s syndicated in the eastern states of the USA. Cultural differences are a constant source of fascination and amusement for me, and I think for my listeners too Right now I’m trying to unravel the mysteries of what Southerners call “collard greens” and also why some people pronounce “Missouri” ending with an “Ee” sound and others end it with an “ah” sound As to the beetroot in burgers question, you’re in good company. In 60 years I’ve never encountered an American who thinks putting beetroot in a burger is a good idea - or for that matter who would even try it

Haven’t lived in Wellington for years, Chocolate Fish cafe in Miramar was always great. There was an interesting cafe in Island Bay with art work made out of thousands of slices of toasted bread in multiple shades of brown. There was the Mona Lisa, Marilyn Monroe, politicians etc it was incredibly well done.
No trip is complete without going up the cable car, (incredible views) walking down through the Botanical Gardens, The Lady Norsewood Rose Garden, through the Boulton St Pioneer Cemetary (heretage roses) and back to theCBD

Best places to visit you missed out the gardens exspecialy when they had a festival there. The weta workshop in miramar , i liked to go to the beaches around miramar too but you always had to watch out for the wind. I saw many games of cri ket at the basin and rugby at athlette park. When i was working in my lunch times i would go for walks along the water that was cool and also to the library.

Okay.. some good places. Do you ever get out to Miramar, Kilbirnie. The Roxy theatre is ten times better than the Embassy theatre and the restaurant there is even better. Their theme nights are a highlight; next are the cafes ... again far far better than some of the ones you mentioned - Maranui cafe, right on Lyall Bay beach, Chocolate Fish Cafe OMG the best seafood sandwiches in the world, The Gypsy cafe for the best coffee and so many in Lyall Bay Kilbirnie but one that has the best salads, vegetarian and Christmas Cakes - Queen Sally’s Diamond Deli. Many more but that should tickle your fancy!!

I remember Roxy cinema did a 2 day and overnight screening of every single Harry Potter movie before the final movie was released at the same time. Everyone was allowed to dress up, there were bean bags, and themed snacks, such an experience and the cinema quality is amazing.

The best cinema in Wellington by a massive amount is the cinema at Park Road Post. Unfortunately it is not open to the public but must be one of the best in the world and although the big theatre at the Roxy is terrific, it is not in the same class as the Park Road Post one.

Ah, Te Papa - a national museum founded on the backs of every other museum in NZ.
When it was set up by the government of the day, part of the law founding it was that Te Papa could demand *any* part of *any* collection in the country. The curators were employed before the museum opened and they were paid to tour the country's museums and then they issued requisitions for all the items they wanted. They basically stripped all the other public-owned museums around the country of their best exhibits - and some of them have never even been on display, they just stripped them so they had it and then put the items in storage. They still periodically issue acquisition orders and take items from other museums around the country.
Not Te Papa's finest hour and a reason that it is distrusted by most public museums around the country to this day.
