My son does TKD as his shout was CHAY initially....now its a silent exhale

My taekwondo instructor told our class once that yelling in a competition is one way to get more fouls. I understand the sentiment behind it now. I think it's more valuable in training than sparring because you'd probably run out of breath.

Umm, no. shouting when striking when sparring or fighting helps you use your air more effectively, because engaging your vocal chords slows down the air escaping when you exhale. running out of breath comes from bad cardio, not from using your voice while fighting.

Please, never scream “Kihap” it’s like screaming “schout” or “scream”. It makes you look a bit stupid in eyes of Koreans.

Hi - thanks so much for this explanation. Now I understand the purpose!
Question for you: is that free bag in the back good for Taekwondo home practice?

Thank you :) Yes, the bag in the back is great for home practice. They are made by Century Martial Arts, but you can probably find them at your local Walmart or sporting goods store.

Hi I have another question- I’m taking taekwondo and my instructor suggested yelling a loud “ai!!” However that does not feel right.
What are some other options I can try?
Also thank you for your advice, I’ll go out and get one of these for home practice :)

Your kihap has to “eventually” be your own, but you should definitely try what your instructor is asking you to.
My kihap has changed several times over the past 40 years and could change again if I feel the need for it.
      Happy to help:)

Level 10 Martial Arts College thank you so much. I don’t want to disrespect my instructor. But having come from a Spanish background the “ai!” Gives a different meaning to me.
I’ll try what he suggests and I eventually see it moving to an aiya! Style.
Thanks for this video - it’s definitely the best out there on kihaps

Hi, I have a question. I do tang Soo do and I have just got my second belt and I’m a female and my instructor tells me not to kihapp how I do, I just go ‘ta’ and I’m not sure how else I should do it as a female

    • @Level10MartialArtsCollege

That’s probably a question best answered by your instructor. The main thing is to yell from your Danjun/Tantian (diaphragm area).
The words, “Eye-Ya” or “Eee-Ya” are fairly common, though.
      Hope that helps.
