  • Struggled a bit going into this marathon not knowing what pace made the most sense to run. Marathon training was up and down. Thankfully, a friend came to my rescue and paced me to an unexpected result.

    Matt, I'm genuinely moved by your video. It's beyond exciting to hear that I played a part in your PR. I have to say that pacing you was one of the most positive running experiences I have ever had, and it confirms what I've heard that helping someone achieve their goal can be more gratifying than achieving your own. I expect that others who supported you, such as your family and Tim, feel the same way. Congrats on an exceptional run - we are all excited to see what comes next!

    It's great when it all falls into place on race day. I think you've got a lot more inside you with better long-term preparation.

      Thanks. I hope you are right. My biggest hurdle is consistency and confidence. Two things I can work on through the summer

    First off, huge congratulations Matt. You and I have always been so close on pace and ability. You have really inspired me to go for it. Last year I went out at 3:30 pace and honestly I had no business going that fast. I let the day get me to excited and broke my cardinal rule to never ever go out to fast. Needless to say by mile 18 I fell off of pace and was holding on for dear life. I did PR with a 3:38:42. Fast forward to this year. New coach that is local. Done a ton of speed work. Many paces that are close to GMP and many long runs with faster than MP miles. I am now ready. Grandma's Marathon is less than three weeks. Take two at sub 3:30.

    3:24 - 4:14 - same thing happened to me. Except I couldn't manage the intervals you guys did when I ran home early. Tim is a big reason I crossed the finish line.

      ROFL!!! If not for you Kevin, I'd have considered mailing it in at 27k and just be satisfied with my 3:25hr BQ. If not for that bathroom break I was forced to take, and getting stuck behind all those slower runners caused by the turn around mix-up, numbers say I was 3:13:XX. If you had not run out of fuel, you'd probably have passed me in the last 400m!
      You are going to CRUSH your next marathon with the knowledge you gained.

      Spend so much time running on my own. Running with other folks really seems to bring out a little extra in me

      @timtrenholm3698 you still had an incredible race!!! Now onto Chicago!!!

    Congrats on a great race! I'm excited to see what is next for you. I also crushed my goal of a sub 3:30 this spring with a 3:27:05. As I look to my fall marathon (Detroit Free Press on October 20th) I'm trying to figure out what my goal should be. Like you, I'll be coming into the training block with a lot more confidence after several failed attempts at sub 3:30. Ultimately, I need to figure out my "why" to give myself a chance at a PB.

    • @WhatMatterstoMatt
      @WhatMatterstoMatt  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is incredible!!! Congrats on the PB!!! Figuring out the why always helps. And I think once you figure out the why you know it because all of the sudden you can find yourself able to push through those hard workouts or races.

    As I said after that 37k workout, you handled my peak long run workout, UNDER hydrated and UNDER fueled. If you had 80g of carbs per hour and were able to get enough hydration on course, I think you could have tagged along with me and Kevin....especially if you couldn't see your HR! ;)
    I ran with only 1 metric. Power....simplifies everything. I still have an extra Stryd pod rotting in my tech drawer.
    If you can nail the consistency this training block, you'll break 3:15 at Moncton. You are literally 1 marathon training block behind me on the EXACT same progression. If you want some challenging sunday long runs this summer, let me know. I suspect Roy, Kevin, (probably coach Mike too) and myself will be doing a few.
    A race/goal is sub 90mins at Fall Classic, and Chicago 3 weeks after will be hopefully a BQ minus 10-15mins.

    Great video 🏃‍♂️ i would go crazy listen to the same song for so long 😅

      @WhatMatterstoMatt  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      😂 what is so crazy is that I literally can’t remember what the song was. I was that focused on the run I was able to ignore it. But I’m sure the moment I hear it again I will remember 😂
