    I love this! My workshop is the back patio, and it takes about 20 minutes to set up, and 20 minutes to tear down (16 minutes if it's starting to rain!) This would really cut down on that set up time, since all I'd have to do is clamp it onto a folding workstand. It's better than anything I currently have, so yeah, I gotta make me one of these! Thanks! God bless!

    nice work! very interesting design! i really like the versatility for attaching it to a lot of different objects in different orientations. i will remember the dovetail cutouts for later, really opened my eyes to the different ways you can use a clamp.
    however, its application seems quite specific. for those without the space, i’d assume they would be stuck using with small/hand tools. this project would take a lot longer and be a lot harder without these tools. likewise, someone with a shop that has large machining tools would probably have the space and resources for a large workbench. when you have that, the benefits of the portable workbench would have limited applications.
    however, i can see it being used for outside work and hobby stuff if you had the workshop to make it

    When I saw the thumbnail, I thought ... "this looks ridiculous ... it must be great!"
    I also noticed that you're laminating the two boards facing away from eachother, which is the right way to laminate (facing away or towards eachother, but not in the 'same direction').
    The fact that you used 2x8 instead of 2x10 just means the design is flexible and allows you to build it without having "exactly what's recommended".
    ... I just love your channel. You keep things simple and easy, while making great videos.

    YES!!! Dwelling in an apartment building definitely has limitations as to what you can do wood working wise.
    For now, instead of stopping altogether and not being productive. I have more or less made a "lateral" move.
    What I mean by that is, I've have been make walking sticks, hiking sticks, and canes.
    Some of the canes I'll am in the process of making, I'm going to donate to a Wounded Warrior program of some sort...

    I use one or two Kreg Mobile Project Centers for my workbench. They are great, but they are not optimal for some types of clamping, hand planing, routing, or sanding. This adds functionality of a workbench to the Kreg Mobile Project Center at a reasonable cost. It is a definite build for me. Additionally, the size of the "Mini Workbench" can be lengthened or shortened to your needs. I will lengthen mine a bit to be equal to two Project Centers side by side.

    I recently watched a video on building 'folding sawhorses' on another channel.
    That video took the best features from 3 different sawhorses and combined them into one (it's the sawhorses that use ropes for tightening - though I'd probably prefer a different approach myself).
    This workbench would probably be a great fit for one of those sawhorses, it would make a space-saving versatile workbench/sawhorse multitool; great for any jobsite or small shop.
    And if you're fan of bench-dogs (like I am), you could easily add dog holes.
    As wood-prices are very high at this point in time, I think I'll be likely to build a combination.

    This looks A LOT like the Work Horse top (which Mike also helped design with Jay Bates). I built the Jay Bates design, and this is basically that, but without legs.
    In short, I LIKE IT A WHOLE LOT. There are some pieces here that give it some more extensibility than I'd previously considered.

    • @731Woodworks

    • @JackRockBLC
      @JackRockBLC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@731Woodworks It's still my favorite "workbench" design. Heavy enough to use for power and hand tools, and light enough (once disassembled) to bring to craft shows. Extensible enough - as your video proves - to do anything I need.
      And I like the fact that I can make new legs of varying heights. So I can have a hand tool bench, a power tool bench, a lathe bench, and a roman-style low workbench ALL without making a new top.

    • @miketaylor9979

    That is a cool project! I've added it to my build list!
    That Southern Yellow Pine is beautiful and tough. Unfortunately, it isn't available up here in NY. We have Doug Fir at our Home Depot. Doug Fir is a lot less dense and usually has quite a few knots. It will also crack and split under pressure. If you go to a wood supplier, not a big box store, you may be able to get Southern Yellow Pine, but if you can't they will have many other types of wood. Consider maple as it is reasonably priced, very tough, and used for workbenches. That is what I will use when I build mine!

    I changed my mind. While maple would be strong, it would also be expensive and very heavy. Doug Fir is cheap in. comparison, and if it gets damaged, I can make a replacement part cheaply. The only thing I wonder about is whether the slots will hold up since Doug Fir is a soft wood. Not a lot to lose though with cheap lumber. I wish we could get Southern Yellow Pine up here. It has a Janka number of 870 compared to 710 for Doug Fir.

      @@BillNeubauer I guess Doug Fir is out then. I will wait until I get some 8 quarter maple, though that will make it quite a lot more costly. That is the problem with a lot of these builds. When you add up the costs, they become pretty expensive.

    Similar idea to the portable Sjoberg workbench.. but without the $250 tag on it. Especially if you already have some MatchFit dovetails, like I do.

    I ❤️ this idea, but wonder how well common construction-grade lumber is going to hold-up in those dovetail channels, from overzealous tightening? - (Which I tend to do ALL the time)

    • @731Woodworks

      They actually hold up well because the force is distributed across the clamp fork.

    Hi i have a question, is the dovetail in 1 3/4 (40mm) plywood as strong as in solid wood?

    • @731Woodworks
      @731Woodworks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it is. May be a good test to do! I use it on my cross cut sled and jointing jig and they are both plywood. No issues so far. Thing is, to hold something flat against the surface, doesn't require a lot of clamping pressure so you're not tightening the clamps a lot.
