Wow! What a story. I read a chapter in a book named, The Korean War, Uncertain Victory, about two pilots that flew F-86Fs, Joseph McConnell and John F. Bolt. After his return to the States, McConnell was a test pilot in the F-86H at Edwards AFB. It had a mechanical malfunction and crashed killing him. When your grandfather mentioned he had flown the same model at Cannon AFB that got my attention. McConnell was America's first triple jet ace and top American Ace of the Korean War.
Thanks again for another great video about your grandfather.

Thanks again for watching Foomba, it's encouraging to have you along for the ride! There are about 6 more chapters I am working on from 2 hours of interviewing him.
Thank you for sharing about McConnell and Bolt, you sure know your history! It's unfortunate that McConnell crashed, but what a hero and legacy. First triple jet ace and top American Ace of the Korean War, wow!

Good tale. As I recall from my days as a USAF pilot, 1967-1972, the D-ring was kept attached to the seat harness until we got to 10,000 feet then we unhooked it . When attached to the seat harness , upon seat separation , the D-ring would be pulled out as the seat flew away. When the D-ring was unattached. then the chute would be deployed either by aneroid pressure or by the pilot manually deploying it. I never had to use the chute. The release or collapse of the chute could be accomplished by either of the Capewell (?) releases attached at the shoulders which in turn were attached to the risers. Thanking Col. Gaessler for his service.

Thank you for your service! Interesting that you unhooked the D-ring, was that standard protocol? I will ask him about that. What did you fly?

These old school guys, like Chuck Yeager, have the best aviation stories.

Grandfather's experience with the F100. It would be better to use some pictures of the F100 for illustration, instead of F86 only.

Thank you, yes my mistake to only include F86. He told me the same, to add F100 photos. I will have to dig up some more of his photos, but I will redo this video with his F100 photos.

Checkout this edit, I found a few photos he took of the F100 and put them into the video. th-cam.com/video/FZoY4hYBCXA/w-d-xo.html
