IMO the thing that would improve plasma looks and the feeling of "beegin polished" the most is a new design for all of the icons. A design which would use consistent width of lines. Current design is all over the place, some icons are very thin and some feel much heavier if that makes any sense. I know this is a lot of work, but this is THE thing that make plasma look unpolished imo.

I also think KDE needs to make greater use of colorless symbolic icons. Compare the icons used by Gnome in settings and the icons used by KDE in settings. Gnome icons are much simpler, colorless. Whereas KDE tries to fit a lot of detail into them (but the icons are too small to appreciate the detail) and look rather dated too.

2:26 I think the reason is that a lot of us users are used to using double-click for either launching something/viewing an image/listening to audio, or going inside a folder and single-click is just for selecting stuff.

I use a click to select and then Enter to open. Click to select is the ideal, as you can rename by clicking and pressing F2, click and delete, click and press enter to enter. Click to open is problematic, and the argument of "double the clicks to navigate" doesn't apply, I personally never click twice to open, it's click + enter for me.

    • @HeathenHacks
      @HeathenHacks ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@softwarelivre2389 To each their own, I guess. For me, I find 2 clicks faster than shifting my other hand to the enter key whenever I want to do something other than selecting, because the default position of my other hand is near the WASD keys and I don't need to take off my hand on the mouse to press enter on the numpad.
Single clicks are better when using a laptop tho, I think.

something that kde could improve on is the use of whitespaces. right now everything either has too much whitespace or too little (sometimes none)
you can clearly see this in things like the settings app, the app has sections where most of the space is unused and has tiny stuff on the center of the screen or the screen is completely filled
this is an issue with almost the entire desktop and I hope you would fix it in this release or slowly tweak it and improve it in the upcoming ones
also softer borders everywhere should probably be considered (midly rounding them would greatly reduce how aggressive everything looks)

Double clicking by default - I think most people prefer it because it allows you to select a single item easily. It might also prevent occasional mis-clicks.
Clicking on the scroll bar - I do prefer to use the mouse wheel in most cases, but I also encounter really, really long documents or lists sometimes and the standard method of scrolling can take a long time to get to where you want. Clicking to go instantly to a spot in a long document actually makes a lot of sense. Occasionally you also get a poorly designed application that has a terrible time detecting scroll wheel events properly, ignores them in certain contexts, or scrolls too fast or too slow.

    • @charlesm.2604
      @charlesm.2604 ปีที่แล้ว

Scrollwheel is a double ended sword because shockingly a lot of mice degrade in the wheel over time and the inputs get fucked. It's not a driver issue, it's a hardware issue.
      Maybe that's just me though.

Sarebbe fantastico.

Nicco, one of the things that I would like to see implemented on KDE 6 and are a must now is making global shortcuts work on Wayland. That would improve functionality for people who have OBS hotkeys to change scenes, for example. Another nice thing would be making the Plasma lock screen default to the picture being used by SDDM unless the user goes and change the lock screen image themselves.

This is why these two changes proposed by Niccolo and reject by the developers (tint the window and use the accent color based on wallpaper by default) would be great.
Each distro would start with a nice visual difference, even using the default Plasma's configuration. Users would feel like they wallpaper was not only a image that stays hidden behind their windows, but would feel like it's now a important part for their system's appearance too.
Anyway, I can't say that I am not happy with the most of the changes, I think that they are doing a lot of good choices, but at the same time I feel like they are not taking some good steps forward related to the appearance due their "pragmatism" .

I think the main reason double-click prevails is because it offers a less effortful way to begin selecting multiple items. I don't have to fish for a checkbox or drag to select which can be sloppy. In addition a lot of people like to "stage" what they are about to do without doing it immediately. I might select a file without opening it in order to show someone something ("take a look at this file" or "you want me to open this file?"). It's useful for demonstration. In other words, double-click gives the user more options, makes them feel safer by not being able to accidentally open something, and decreases the overall resistance of multi-select. Whereas double-clicking itself might be seen as a resistance to opening a file, it is not seen that way as everyone is used to it and they can all do it rapidly. In addition, managing files is MORE COMMON THAN OPENING THEM!

I love the KDE community, have been using Plasma for a few years now, and it is hands-down the best desktop environment I have ever used!
Something I would like to see improved is the high-dpi and on-screen keyboard support.
I recently got a high-dpi touchscreen computer and even the latest KDE Neon was riddled with scaling inconsistency (even after adjusting the global window scale), and Maliit-keyboard (the only DE-integrated board I could find) didn't properly open up at the right times, would leave context menus up from closed or minimized windows, etc. I didn't want to do it, but I now use GNOME on that device and everything worked/scaled perfectly out of the box with it. I just hope to be able to see that level of support for edge cases like this from KDE as well soon.
Super excited for KDE 6! ❤️

    Floating Panel:
I kinda like it, but I don't think there are more people who wants to go back to the old fixed panels. Since distros cater mainly for users incoming from Windows, I doubt that they'll keep it and not override the defaults.
    Double Click by Default:
This is the first thing I do on a desktop whenever I reinstall my OS and it goes to single click by default. However, there is reason for this. It has to do with how users use their system. Are they going to use a mouse/trackpad? Are they using a touchscreen?
For mouse or trackpad, single click to select and double click to open makes sense. An extreme lot of users are used to this behaviour and again, thanks to Windows and macOS. Changing this will come as a shock to all the muscle memory that people have developed over all these years. I'm using a computer since 2001 and I'm deeply used to this behaviour too.
For touchscreens, thanks to smartphones, we are used to open with a single tap and select with a press and hold gesture. So again, this is the muscle memory for a lot of users with touch screen, so challenging muscle memory will cause users to try to look for an option to change it or look for a different DE or an OS altogether.
    Wayland by Default:
I appreciate this change. Personal anecdote here, I've been using Wayland on KDE since last Jan with an NVIDIA card. I've got two displays, one 1080p and one 4K and both are working great for me. There were issues but pretty minor ones that I learned to ignore. Compared to X11, I get different refresh rates support in Wayland and better colour profiles, which I appreciate.
    Accent-Coloured titlebar by Default:
While I liked the idea, I'm a little bit skeptical about this. For example, as an Android Developer I use Android Studio quite a lot. If I have a dark mode but a wallpaper that has green as primary colour, it might look a little odd on this. By the way, what will happen if people doesn't use Breeze but go with a different theme or window decorations?
    New Default Task Switcher:
I appreciate this one. Although now-a-days I'm relying on thumbnails from taskbar instead of Alt-Tabbing if there are multiple windows. Would be a great time save as at times I'll be having three different Firefox instances.
Scrolling on Desktop to switch them, off by default:
I totally appreciate it. I don't know who got this idea in the first place, but I spent almost a week trying to find this setting and disable it. Can you also disable scrolling on the taskbar to switch desktops by default?
    Clicking on the Scrollbar:
I don't care much about this either. It's been a pretty long while since I interacted with scrollbars anyways.
    New Overview:
Honestly when you first made the video about new overview, I'm like whyy?? But at the end, I liked it. Btw, can you give it the ability to reorder desktops by dragging the desktops? That'd make it much much easier.
    Less Updates:
You kinda broke my heart as a user here, but I understand as a fellow developer who's actively trying to change our release cycle from once a week to once every two weeks in our company. I hear ya here.
    Wallpaper settings page:
I agree with this one as well.
Thanks for making Kool Desktop Environment a Kooler Desktop Environment Niccolo!

I am sad to know that they didn't accept to tint the window and use accent color based on wallpaper by default. 😮‍💨
I am 100% sure that most of the users would find this awesome.

Thanks Nicco! Looking forward to 6 it is looking more like a cohesive professional polished OS. I for one liked your vision of the accent colors. At least make it an optional selection. It can be a pain adjusting everything individually. I liked the look of the entire window using the colors a bit muted.

Idk why theirs such a big debate on single click or double click, I personally love double click as it gives you a second if you want to run something or not, it also just makes wanting to select a file easier.
Like yeah, for certain workflows single click might be slightly faster, but at the end of the day double click in my opinion is better. As it prevents users from accidentally running programs / opening files when they just wanted to select them, or changed their mind. Which has personally happened to me way to often.
I was personally annoyed and confused why when I first installed KDE on arch it was opening crap by default, I thought I was doing something wrong, but nope. Turns out it was just enabled by default!
Im glad they're making this change, and I know some people will argue "But what about less then 1% of the population which need this". Which in that case, just enable it in the options...
Its just more user friendly to have a universal action being the double click (which is the standard) default.

Double-click by default is a good change if for no other reason than users expect it. I've tried to use it but it just never worked for me in the past. I found it frustrating, and between that and there being something I didn't like about keyboard navigation in Dolphin I ended up doing most of my file management in the terminal because it worked better. That's a sad state to be in.
It's been long enough that I don't even remember what it was that frustrated me so much, but the Dolphin flatpak works great now even with the single click. So I guess whatever problems I had with it have been ironed out.
I like the new default task switcher as well. Definitely an upgrade there.
Same with Wayland by default, as long as all the worst bugs get fixed. Sounds like you guys are on the right path there as well.
Also jump to location on clicking scrollbars is a good change. I don't click scrollbars often, but when I do that is the behavior I expect.
Like many others, I do wish the icons would change. Personally I miss the old 3.5 icons.

The debate about double click vs single click select is very similar to Blender's debate about left click vs right click select.

  • @McDinoh
    @McDinoh ปีที่แล้ว

Maybe a compromise of the number of clicks can be built into KDE (or any OS). Double click to open folder, single click to launch the app.
I am from the Commodore days and first GUI was on the Atari ST. Double click was default to be able to not launch anything by accident.
Sometimes you would click and before the second click realize it was the wrong thing and stop yourself from the 2nd click and so the app (or whatever) would not launch.
If it was single click by extension, that would help too since you want to launch apps, and some extensions, but not launch other things.
Just a thought. Good with either direction it goes. Just a matter of muscle memory. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next release.

I experimented with Kubuntu last night and I managed to set everything to my liking in about 10 minutes - in contrast to about 1 year ago, which took way longer. I've only used KDE twice, and no longer than 1 week. So props to the team to making everything easier to manage. I might switch from gnome to KDE in the near future, but I worry about how everything will run since I have an Nvidia card, and live mode is not indicative of how it will run when installed. It did run fine in live mode though...Even from a USB.
Edit: switched to KDE. Accent colors? damn, the default theme might actually be usable now.

the new overview looks great. I just upgraded to KDE 6 on Fedora 40. I don't find any description of how to access the overview however. Where is it documented? What trackpad, mouse or keyboard shortcuts does one use? Great work Nicco! AHA! I think I found it (on laptop anyway) - mouse pointer to top left hand corner.

You should take some inspiration from thunar. They have the option that hovering over the file/folder selects it after a certain delay. So double click to open becomes single click, and single click to select becomes zero click.

Is Plasma able to do glass effect for the taskbar and menu yet? I used to use KDE with Compton as a lightweight compositor. When Compton was running, it turned the taskbar and menu into black glass, and combined with a great wallpaper, it was the single most beautiful desktop I had ever used. I haven't been able to replicate the same look with KDE's current tools and effects (though I haven't used the latest versions), but if we could replicate that look, I think the desktop theme would wow many people and win new fans.

I love the desktop environment and it's my daily driver, but can Plasma allow configuring the spacing in some of the applets? Example, the calendar in the time applet is abaolutely huge for my screen, which is 1366x768, or the new kickoff menu is very large as well, with a lot of space not being used.

I switched to single-click when mentioned here a few weeks back, but with this "announcement", I've immediately switched back. Just couldn't get on with it in Dolphin.
Aside from the floating panel (just doesn't affect me due to solid black wallpaper and mostly using maximized windows) and title bar tinting (nearly black anyway), all fits for me.
Thanks for the info, Nicco. 😘
