    Our mascot is a Super Flying Monkey. The wife and I flew to Kansas City, bought two Walmart $85 mountain bikes, peddled the KATY Trail (300 miles) to St. Luis. Stayed at AirB&B's. Then we gave away the bikes, flew home. Great trip!

    One bit of gear that might be worth mentioning, that you don’t carry, is cooking gear. I like to cook dinner, and heat water for oatmeal and hot chocolate in the morning. I carry a Soto stove, iso-butane fuel canister, 1.4 liter collapsible pot, bowl, and cup, and a small fry pan (all Sea-to-Summit). I can cook pretty decent meals for less than eating in a restaurant.

    • @duzer
      @duzer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Colleen Welch good point! I’m not much of a cooker:)

    • @brianbassettnumber1
      @brianbassettnumber1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You would be surprised how many riders cross this country and are never out of reach of food, water, power or lodging for even one night. I carry more gear for cooking than you do even.

    • @brianbassettnumber1

      Sounds like you need to buy better bikes, Don.

    • @halibut1249
      @halibut1249 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, absolutely, cook kit and small stove are must-haves. Not only save money over restaurants and avoid junk food at fast-food salt pits, but you also save lots of time not having to ride around looking for food places, and that extra time for pedalling really adds up.

    Great list, very well & entertainingly presented, thanks!
    Tip for hollowfiber water filters: they tend to dry up between uses when set aside for "a while" (> a week) -- if water only trickles through when you try to use it after a long pause (and you're sure it's not simply clogged by debris or silt from low-quality water sources), try to soak it fully immersed in water overnight or at least for a few hours.
    And i strap my solar-powered lantern on top of a bag on the bike, so it recharges during the day.

    In 1982 I rode from Miami to Seattle. Started the trip with 70 pounds (!) of gear. By the time I got to Oklahoma my gear, tools and all, were at 31- 34 pounds. My 'electronics' package was a tiny radio. I remember the song "Maniac" , perfect cadence for flying! In the morning, put some beans in a sealed vessel with some water and let them soak all day - quicker cook time. Brooks all leather saddle is heavy...and highly recommended! Book store: read the book then leave it for someone to find. Paraffin candles and a lighter. Maybe, because there are two of you, you got down to 30 pounds a piece - but I find that, with all the stuff you've shown, difficult to believe.

    Great video, thanks for sharing! Lots of great advice. I use a lot of the same gear: Ortlieb panniers, Luci light, Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, and MacBook Pro. I like to carry 3 sets of riding clothes so I don't have to wash them every day. I've found that camping out adds a lot of weight to my bike (tent, sleeping bag, extra food, cooking gear), and deprives me of a shower, so I prefer to find cheap motels. I'd love to see some tips on pumps. Most lightweight pumps only get to 50psi, and don't have gauges.

    This is the most informative and "organized" what to pack for packing for cycle touring in the YTube forest. Add for sure, start simple and easy to keep clean and hygienic with the butter knife. So many are felled with gut issues not from bad water as bugs in the kitchen. As a 50+ year wilderness backpacker, I needed the shaved down to the essentials outlook for cycle touring. I was always turned off by the 4-5 large pannier hogs I see creeping through the west and wondered when the Ultralight revolution was going to sweep bike touring. That you both kept to low center of gravity Ortlieb panniers with a modest handlebar bag was inspirational. Two many bags, and they are going to get filled up with stuff. Yes I shave and keep short hair; on the trail or road, it is just healthier. With the areas you traveled this off regular touring path I would suggest a SOS messenger like an Garmin InReach or SPOTX in the wide open West without cellular coverage. I used a SPOTX for two months and three trips and such a great tool. I need to know how hard is it to find refritos west of the Mississippi?

    • @joebanez3964
      @joebanez3964 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marc, I would go with mountain bike, because it gives you the flexibility to go to bumpy dirt road and out of the trail. For example, if you are doing the ‘Camino Frances’, the classic route, you’ll be heading in and out of the trail. I mean you’ll encounter variety of terrain. The same thing with Camino del Norte - along the coastline of northern Spain.

    Thanks Guys some great advice there. All I need now is the courage to set off on an adventure. Doesn't help that my wife keeps telling I am far too old & I will get killed. Mind you she has got a point as I did blow myself up in a tent once on a motorcycle tour. Hopefully you've already seen them but check out the Beard Brothers videos who tour over here in the UK your enjoy them. Safe travels & I didnt know just how much I need to cram into one life.

    Love your videos Ryan & Ali. Great tips. BTW I found a great British outdoor company named ALPKIT. Their gears are great and great price. I just did a tour in Italy with their bags and are great. Keep posting and riding!

    I'm so inspired! I'm a long distance hiker--having thru hiked the Appalachian and Pacific Crest trail and I see many similarities between the experiences of bike touring and thru hiking. I'm not a cyclist, but your videos are making me think a bike tour across america needs to be on my bucket list!
    We found you on line while planning a hike of the Three Passes Trek in Nepal and have been following your other adventures ever since!
    Thanks for sharing such wonderful and positive stories.

    I'm getting into bike touring and the retail market has a three piece foldable cutlery set; spoon, fork, and butter/cutting knife. Someone mentioned as for clothing, that only take up to one week's worth of clothing (for those long distant bike tours); clothing is often repeated as for wear at a week's worth of clothing. Less is better when taking to carry. Goal: Lightweight and compact.

    A key chain multi tool is just the thing for getting those little wires from radial truck tires out of your tires. Gerber makes one for about $12 that has excellent pliers. It was recommended by Wirecutter.

    So, how do you pack all of that gear, which means, can you do a video on how you packed your bikes and what type of rear trunk racks, front racks, along with panniers do you use? Thanks.

    +1 for Schwalbe Marathons. I no longer tour but do commute20 miles a day, all year round on farm track, tow paths and roads.
    I have had 1 puncture in the 3 yrs since I've been using them and that was a humongous thorn through the sidewall.
    Highly recommend 👌

    Nice video.
    Yes Schwalbe tyres!!! I have ridden 10,0000 km with out a flat since I switched to Schwalbe Marathon plus. Plus they are great in rain and snow.
    Yes to natural fiber clothes. Synthetics stink. And they put microfibers into the water supply.
    Doing a Covid vacation tour of Upplands Provence Sweden in July/August. Going to seek out Viking and Vendel sites.
