    The thing that I learned from you was about the roots in the water column being child plants ready to propagate. Thanks for the awesome video!

    I learnt how to propagate such beautiful red plants, also I learned that there are so many variations between minis and variegation between the leaves. I love your content! I hope you make it big like other aquarium hobbyists on TH-cam. 😁

    So much wonderful information. Even if not doing plants for profit this gives tons of information how to tell if your plants are healthy and if they are missing one of the big three (light, CO2, and nutrients).

    I don't use C02 but my plants look like yours in your C02 tank. They are completely red. No green. I wonder why that is although I'm happy about it. Thank you for the video on this plant. I needed it as I have it in all my tanks.

    • @dmoore0079
      @dmoore0079 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've gotten pretty decent red out of AR without CO2. The trick is medium light, low PH, and a good supply of iron in the substrate. Lower PH makes iron more readily available to plants, which is definitely a benefit for the red plants. Using a good amount of a clay based substrate will maintain a low PH and will also bond a lot of nutrients for the plant roots.

    I am enthralled! Great series! Keep them coming. I would love to learn how to ID plants, how to distinguish them when found as "Hygrophila sp" for instance. I know many consider Hygro weeds, but I would Love to see a video on this species. Forgive me if you've already done one I haven't been able to see all the videos yet!

    Really glad to see a species spotlight on plants. Can you grow the Alternanthera Reinecki taller without a lot of the water roots? More ferts in the substrate maybe? And do you add any ferts to your soil?

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could in theory grow it well out of water, some of mine has grown out of the tank before I finally trimmed it back down. I only add some basic root tabs over where the crypts are planted, as this has Fluval Stratum and Eco-Complete in the substrate, the CEC is pretty strong, so liquid fertilizer will be pulled into the substrate for plants to feed from.

    Any chance for an update or new version of this? I've failed with it probably 6-8 times. The closest I've come is keeping it alive for a pair of weeks until it wilted off.
    The biggest question I have is why this species of plant specifically seems to wilt off and turn to mush on some people. I wish I understood this species better.

    I got lucky and found that at petco today. Must be very fresh- no roots,but its full leafed,solid stemmed and right off the bat stood out in my sunlit tank. A great contrast to a Echinodorus grisebachii.

    I learned that the brown tops and scarlet pink underside of my AR Mini leaves is NOT because I did something wrong - that's just because I'm only doing 2 drops of CO2 per second. In a 22gal long I'm afraid to do more than 3bps for fear of gassing my shrimp and SAE. Should I be worried to increase it?

  • @StanTheObserver-lo8rx
    @StanTheObserver-lo8rx 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I picked up a tissue culture A.r. 'Rosanervig'. The label also called it 'Cardinalis'.One bunch ,two names. I don't use Co2,but I do use lots of Iron. My tap must be near iron free.
    That tank in the vid,Bentley,does it use Co2? And what light is that? Never seen an LED with yellow lights like that. Thats a nice amount of light from that one strip.

    I have some Alternanthera reineckii Rosanervig being delivered this week. With a lot of stem plants, the (rooted) stem melts/rots where I plant it. What can I do to prevent that? Should I weight it down & let the roots do their own thing?

    • @BentleyPascoe

      Weigh the plants down and let them convert to your water conditions. Once you see some decent new root growth, you should be safe

    hmm those child plants are interesting, I didnt even realize there was a mini morph. Do you have any advice on how not to split the AR? when planting?, I almost always bend a stem in this process and it snaps like a toothpick. Also...I'm stoked to be doing side trimming instead of topping on these now.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium I've found this comes down to using straight tweezers and planting straight downward leaving about 1/4" of tweezer ahead of the roots to do all the burrowing for you. Just plant slow and careful has been my best success story the prevent bends or breaks.

  • @karenhudson3275
    @karenhudson3275 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, I have just bought one of these, it arrived with no roots, the seller claims plants cannot be imported with roots, how can it establish itself in my tank with no root system, it died by he's saying it's due to my tank conditions? perfect water parameters, temperature and lighting

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the way that I would accomplish this is using a plant weight to hold the plant down by the substrate but not actually planting it into the substrate. This will give the plan a little bit of time to build a root system and adjust to your water before you plant it into the substrate. One of the easiest ways to know whether or not it's fully submersed grown is based on the leaves themselves. If you hold the leaves up to some light and they seem vaguely transparent, they're more than likely submersed grown. If they are more opaque and you're really not seeing light come through very clearly, then that's more than likely that they were emergent grown and then it has to do a lot more conversion to convert to living inside your tank.

  • @erick6102
    @erick6102 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you pull the adult plant out of the substrate and replant it, does it take awhile to get going again ? Does it go through any shock/ leaf melt? I was told that was a no unless you really want to rescape your tank.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eric K in my experience there's effectively no issue. Same water system, same nutrients so it doesn't do any real adjustment. You might see a short stall in growth, but it's pretty negligible. This can be different with very heavy root feeders like swords though. For stems: no issues.

    Can I use liquid CO2 (Easy Carbon, CO2 Booster, Excel, etc.) along with Seachem Flourish and get good results with this plant (I have 3 small ones)? Do I need to dose it every day? I'm using root tabs and Eco Complete/Stratum/Crushed coral substrate; medium light, somewhat heavily planted but waiting for plants to take off and fill in 20G tank. I hope my little peewee plants grow up to look like your gorgeous Goliaths!

    • @BentleyPascoe

      Yes it's possible as they are a water column feeder. Though they do try to develop pretty strong root systems for a stem, you'll likely see more mid-water column roots as it thrives.
