  • Siegfried - Stig Fohg Andersen
    Brünnhilde - Irene Théorin
    Hagen - Peter Klaveness
    Gunther - Guido Paevatelu
    Gutrune - Ylva Kihlberg
    Waltraute - Annette Bod
    Alberich - Sten Byriel
    Director - Kasper Bech Holten
The Choir of the Royal Danish Opera
The Royal Danish Orchestra under Sir Michael Schønwandt
Excepting James Johnson (Wagner, recurring in Götterdämmerung as a silent role), the Copenhagen Ring is sung by an entirely Scandinavian cast, mostly in-house from the Royal Danish Opera. Nevertheless, the singing in this recording of the Ring is considered to be world class.
The production by Kasper Bech Holten, now Director of Opera at the Royal Opera in London, has been called the Feminist Ring for its unusual perspectives on Wagner's female characters and the decision to choose a framing story focused on Brünnhilde. It is also well-known for its setting in a familial instead of an epic sphere, and its elaborately detailed, cramped set designs.
The video recording is characterised by frequent cuts and unusual camera angles. 18 cameras in total were used, including viewpoints from the drain of Mime's sink during the Forging Scene in Siegfried.
Though I stated on the Siegfried videos that Rheingold and Walküre were already on TH-cam (where I got them from in the first place), I have been unable to find them. I'll probably reupload them later this week.
May be unsuitable for conservative Wagnerians.

These are my favorite cast of Gibichungs. I love the visual and psychological interpretations of their personalities and relationships. Gunther and Gutrune as trust-fund brats and Hagen as the hard working subordinate who actually runs the show.

I have this Ring on DVD and I think it's one of the very best productions available! It's modern, visionary, stunning, surprising and at times simply breathtaking. The singers aren't bad, especially Stig Andersen and Irene Théorin.

Well Ms. Théorin really nailed that notoriously treacherous high C in the duet! I’ve always enjoyed her singing. She’s a solid musician with a very secure beautiful voice.

So great that you have posted this! I have the whole cycle on dvd, but for everyone who hasn't purchased it: it is a must have for every Wagnerian. Such an amazing approach of Wagners most important work.

More than that, they are, in fact, traditional Wagnerians complaining about Regietheater :D

the cosima book was a fun easter egg as cosima was richard wagner's wife at the time that he was writing the ring cycle.

I have few problems with modernist design, if it doesn't spoil the plot (at least doesn't spoil it very much). But here the very beginning is illogical. What man would leave his true love when she's into the last months of pregnancy? And, by the way, how on earth couldn't Gunther see that the "maiden bride" recommended by Hagen was with child?
I didn't mind much Sieglinde pulling out the sword or even Wotan killing Loge, but the innovations in Götterdämmerung just don't fit together.

Finally a coherent criticism of a Wagner opera production that isn't just "eu g hufhrf Jews and liberals made this stupid." Thank you for genuine input!

To be fair, I think Wotan killing Loge is in the Götterdämmerung libretto. However, on the whole yes, this is very hit and miss.

One does not have to be 'conservative' to reject this approach of stage direction out of hand. I stopped looking/listening after a couple of minutes... it is just ridiculous to break into the plot in this way, puerile, and offensive to intelligent audiences. It is greatly embarrassing, like shitting on a Leonardo canvas.

On the contrary, it worked very well for me......I love the fact that they're in the conservatory, waterimg their plants. As for Brunnhilde's pregnancy.......there IS a branch of the legend in which Sigurd and Brynhild have a daughter, Aslaug.
