  • A few of you guys were asking for a video of the bike so I've done this quick walk around. The DCC hooligan mufflers were unbearably loud so punched baffles with washers have been added to restrict flow. They are right on 100db now.

    That's awesome. Thanks mate! Couple other questions, haha. Seriously one of the best 440 builds I've seen, just wandering if you cut and added new bars to straighten the subfram, or just cut and fit the existing ones?
    Also, the carb filter and battery box! So clean! Did you put the wires under the seat? And get rid of the air box? If so, how!? Love it. Great work!

      Jordan Hardy Thanks. Yes the subframe was cut out and re-made from some 1" pipe. The whole build is covered here: www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/forum/vintage-motorcyle-info/177073-new-member.html
      Theres a lot of info floating around about the limitations of CV carbs and difficulty in tuning. Given this was my first build and I didn't want to stuff around too much with jetting, I ended up making an airbox inside a filter. Here is a writeup if you're interested: www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/forum/vintage-motorcyle-info/187922-fabricated-replacement-air-intake-kz440.html
      Yes all the wires are ziptied to tabs under the seat. The battery box is a custom job, made up by a fabricator for $50 off a template I made up. If I was doing the build again I wouldn't worry about the box and just mount an Antigravity battery sideways under the seat hump. At that stage I didn't know they existed.

    Awesome work on this! I have a 1982 KZ550 that I want to do a scrambler or cafe conversion on and between your bike and the scrambler that Pavel Partyngl built, I finally have some great examples of how awesome these bikes can be with a little bit of work. It looks like you left the foot controls in the original position. How comfortable is the bike with the controls in that position as opposed to further back?

    • @buildsix
      @buildsix  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not too bad, but it'll depent on your height. Im around 6'2" and can ride it comfortably for about an hour. If the bars were below the top triple clamp it would be way more uncomfortable. I think this position is a good compromise.

    Great sound, did you upgrade the carbs with better performance jets or full carb kit? or did you just use the existing bone stock carbs? I have just bought a kz440 ltd which has been imported into the UK. We are looking to tune it up better if possible.

    • @buildsix
      @buildsix  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Michael, The carbs are stock because from what I read, tuning these CV carbs can be a bit of a minefield. You might save a lot of trouble just throwing a pair of Mikunis on to it. I built baffles into the filter to help reduce airflow to what the OEM air box could provide so was able to keep the cabs stock.

    Hey man just curious where you got that seat from cause I'm looking for a seat to put on mine but finding it hard to find one that isn't too slim or wide.

    • @buildsix
      @buildsix  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Diego techera Hey, the seat is from Dime City Cycles. Its their "Black DCC Originals Ribbed Leather Wrapped Cafe Seat".
      I did have to cut the subframe up to make it fit though, the 440 LTD sub frame needs a lot of straightening.

    Hey, probably not going to get a response but jut curious on how you were able to get the seat the way it is. Been looking around and cannot find how to get it to work well on mine. (IK i need to adjust fraame but just curious how, also love this build! thanks

    • @buildsix
      @buildsix  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jason, I had to cut the subframe and weld a pair of straight pipes and a seat hoop at the end to support this type of seat. I'm not sure its possible go get it to work on the stock frame with that kick up half way through.

    Nice job. I'm mostly interested in that seat. My '80 KZ440 is an LTD with that two level set up and my legs are too long at 6'. Can you give me some direction as to where you purchased it. Thank You. Murray

    • @buildsix
      @buildsix  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, the seat is from Dime City Cycles, but it needed some serious work to make fit. The subframe has been cut, and a new seat hoop welded on. The height of this seat is actually lower than stock so probably wouldn't help in your situation.

    Nice build, is that the stock tank?: Im buying a well maintained kz440 (82) for 1500 canadian dollars, is that a good price?

    • @buildsix
      @buildsix  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, stock tank on this build. I think if its well maintained that is a fair price depending on kilometers/miles. Mine was 500AUD but it needed to be rebuilt. The total build cost was around 3500AUD

    Where did you get the seat? was it a direct fit? I been trynna find one for mine.

    • @buildsix
      @buildsix  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This was from Dime City, about 10 years old so I don't think they sell this style anymore. The LTD needed the frame to be modified to make this fit.

    hey, where did you get your gauges from? any trouble mounting them?

    • @buildsix
      @buildsix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jordan Hardy Hey, the gauges were also from Dime City Cycles. They should give me some free stuff for all the promotion I've done for them, lol.
      The gauges each came with the mount plate, which I bolted to the OEM location using some rubber grommets for the vibration. They are tied together at the back with a short piece of flat bar using the bolts that hold the gauges onto the mount plate. It was pretty straight forward in terms of wiring too. The only thing to watch out for is going from 2 indicator dash lights to one on the new dial. The fix is pretty straight forward though, and can be done with a pair of rectifier diodes.

    • @buildsix
      @buildsix  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey are stock forks, but the lower tubes have been painted black, and the stanchions have been pulled up about 2 inches to lower the font.

    What size clip on handle bars are those? What brand?

    • @buildsix
      @buildsix  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are a generic clip on from Ebay, but the chrome has a lot of surface rust now. Im about to replace them.
      Most 33mm clip-ons will work if you pull the stanchions up through the top triple tree, but watch for the clamp bolt position because the raised sections in the top clamp can get in the way of the bolts.

    how does the bike drive with the air pods?

    • @buildsix
      @buildsix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No issues at all, but having said that I did make a custom airbox which sits inside the filter.

      Balazs Szikszai ah sweet! i just bought a 80 kz440 a couple weeks ago and has good compression, spark, and everything else... now im just about to get started on cleaning the carburetors but i've been jumping from thread to thread and they all say that that particular bike has a rough time running without the OEM air box. Finding that part is a pain in the ass if you dont want to spend an arm and a leg.
