- Scene From the movie "Freedom," borrowed for educational use for my 8th grade U.S. History class. It depicts slaves aboard a slave ship on a course for South Carolina. Great clip for showing the unsanitary conditions these people had to endure while crossing the Atlantic from Africa to the Americas.
the bad thing is, there were treated even worse than what this shows.

@@Ralphie5023 Just read any book pertaining to the “Middle Passage.” I tried reading one years ago, still have the book. The men who ran the slave ships were former prisoners, and the degenerates of society. They raped the African women on the slave ships. The slaves were packed in the ships like sardines and could not help but urinate, defecate, and vomit on each other. Any slave that was dead, or dying, was simply thrown overboard and eaten by sharks. There was no “ceremony” or wrapping dead bodies as they depicted in this movie.
The Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italians, British, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, German, Belgian, Irish, And Swiss all did lots of heavy carnage

This scene always makes me cry. Slavery is one long topic to go through, seeing all the blacks being tortured, mothers throwing their babies overboard etc. I just can't take it. :(

I got some questions…. So was there a such thing as ship capacity back then? How much food and fresh water does it take to last a 3 month voyage across the oceans? Can anybody survive 3 months in an unsanitary environment with little to no food? Do ocean gyres have an impact on sailing across the ocean? What year were steam boats invented? What year did the 🇺🇸 government ban importation of slaves? What was Webster’s original definition of “American” (year 1828)?

It depends, if they were plantation owners or slave traders, they were. However, if they were just people who didn't have slaves or were actively fighting against slavery, then they weren't. He/she should know what they were better than you, so I would assume that he/she would know if they were slave traders or the like.
