    I remember watching this as a child. When the Dalek’s came out of the Sphere I absolutely screamed the room down in surprise- much to the annoyance of my parents, who were in the other room at the time and thought an actual emergency had happened. This was the second time this had happened during this series of Doctor Who. By the time the next series rolled around they had learned to ignore screaming from me when the show was in progress.

    2 of the doctors most iconic and deadliest enemies in the same finale was, for a lot of fans, a dream come true when this and the next episode first aired. Fans had been waiting for decades for something like this to happen which is why this 2 part finale is certainly one of the best and one of most memorable of the entire history of the show.

    The character of Mickey makes such a nice point over the course of the series: the difference in demeanor between him early in the series and here is so stark. From unsure of himself, just tagging along and waiting for his girl to having purpose, making decisions and taking charge. It perfectly shows in his facial expressions.
    And I'd say it makes him so much more attractive.

    One of the most anticipated episodes, especially for the season finale. Right from the beginning when Rose is narrating this is how she died, you can't help wondering what is going to happen in the end. It is also an episode that needs to be seen before getting into "Torchwood" which there should not be any hurry to see yet.

    I still remember seeing this live, we all felt the shock you did, it's SUCH a good set up and an amazing finale.
    Torchwood (and the Sarah Jane Adventures) are both fantastic shows, but both very much designed to be 'extra' and optional to the main show. Torchwood is NOT for kids, and SJA very much was, and Doctor Who is pretty much in the middle in terms of tone, so they made sure it's fine to just watch DW, but you should definitely check out the spin offs at some point! As for 'watch X Torchwood before Y Doctor Who' it's not that big of a deal, when you see that bit of Torchwood you'll go 'oh this leads into that bit of Who, ok' and that's about it.

    You don't have to watch Torchwood to keep following what's happening in DW. Torchwood was the 'adult' arm of the NuWho universe so my kids didn't watch it as they were too young when it came out. You don't miss anything in the DW story. Torchwood is fantastic in my opinion - it's great, well acted and interesting stories. I loved it from the first episode.

    This episode is amazing. Murray Gold is playing a bonfire of burning pianos with the music for this episode. Two of the most powerful classic enemies in an epic battle across the planet. Yet another glimpse at what the Time War could have looked like. It all has a wonderful buildup through the season and brings together various elements.
    The storytelling is fantastic. It's an ominous atmosphere around some very chipper characters.
    I'm really looking forward to the finale, the special, and the start of another amazing season. A top favorite season of mine, a large part due to the companion, despite some of the problems and my frustrations with the season.

    Torchwood Institute was established to deal with alien threats by Queen Victoria, after she encountered the werewolf and the Doctor. Aliens and alien stuff has been showing up on Earth for a long time, as shown in the previous episode "Dalek", where the guy had built an underground museum of alien artifacts. Presumably Torchwood had also been collecting such artifacts and studying them. They had long been aware of the Doctor and his blue box since he has been appearing throughout Earth's history.

    This is a great two parter season finale. Just FYI some actors that show up in a small role on an episode come back later playing a complexly different character that is part of the Doctor Who story line. The actress playing Adeola, the woman who first found the cyberman in the renovation area will be back fairly soon. So if you're ever wondering why does she look familiar this is where. Something to keep an eye out going forward with the series. 😉

    I think you’re right to give Doctor Who priority over Torchwood, if you don’t have time for both. The two shows occasionally intersect a bit, but they are separate shows, made for somewhat different though overlapping audiences, and you don’t need to watch both. It’s quite feasible to catch up with Torchwood later, if you want to. You’re aware that Torchwood exists, and that the man calling himself Jack Harkness is involved with it; you probably don’t need to know any more about it when watching Doctor Who. There were only four seasons of Torchwood: it had a very much shorter life than Doctor Who.

    One thing I always thought when I watch this episode: Some outliers aside, the parallel universe is pretty similar to the normal one; E.g. Jackie being in both, and how the Jackie/Cyberman remembered her memories after conversion. I always imagine that the "Ghosts" appearing in certain areas was akin to them remembering their loved ones and actually visiting them; Jackie's dead father being upgraded in the Parallel universe, so the cyberman-Father visits her. Or say how the one ghost appears in the Queen Vic; deceased actor maybe? Recall that the Cybus Cybermen legitimately think they're being kind in removing their emotions, so the motive is there.

      @@BlackMatt2k She was. As I mentioned, she was upgraded and yet still recognised Pete. Hence my idea that the cybermen could be able to recognise others like that. It's like the scene with Mickey in the parallel universe visiting his nan; it isn't *his* nan, but it didn't matter to him.

    • @simongiles9749
      @simongiles9749 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny thing about the ghost of "Dirty" Den Watts turning up in the Queen Vic is that Tracey Ann Oberman, who plays Hartmann, also played the character in Eastenders who killed him. Or, as I recall, put a hit out on him only for the character to apparently come back from the dead in the soap.

    8:04 "C'mon then ya BEAUTYYYEEEAAAAH!!!"
    Moments like these are exactly why people love David Tennants 10th doctor.
    One of the reasosn he became an actor was because he was a fan of Doctor Who ever since being a child, now he has achived that dream, and he ABSOLUTELY lets his excitement to play him show on every episode.
    And it works absolutely in his favor and fantasticly on a scenes like this one (yet alone all the million other scenes where he is basically just a meme lol) where Doctor is facing something he for once doesn't (yet) understand, putting him in extasy. Because he can just go into that inner child having a blast all so easily.
    He is just a fan, living the dream of some fans, providing more content for his fellow fans.
    For that alone he earns his place as one of the best Doctors for sure.
    About the need to watch Torchwood:
    Personally I never did watch Torchwood before the episode it was needed for, nor I still have. But honestly I don't think I really lost all THAT much as in my opinion once we get there the Who does explain all the things you NEED to know pretty well.
    All I was really left out of was that I didn't know who the certain characters were, thus they didn't leave much impact to me when the show asked for me to care about them, but FOR ME PERSONALLY I don't feel I missed out that much honestly. As in, I'm not sure would it have been worth the effort to pause the main show in order to watch a spin-off I might or might not like about just to learn what character X likes to eat on their breakfest or such and then resume.
    Point being; not saying gren or red light to that one lol. Proceed with your own judgement.
    Also sidenote just thinking out loud watching this...
    Shout out to our boy Mickey having actual character growth in the show!
    From an arguably "sort of ass at times" and being so afraid of the Doctor and everything that he literally held on to Rose at S1E01 in absolute terror to now this one, the "Mickey Smith, defending the earth!" -badass.
    Another sidenote:
    I never noticed it on my first watching of the show (or at least it didn't register) but seeing Freema Agyeman (the female who went to get "coffee") on this episode (she'll have another role later on thats a bit more rememberable) is kinda funny, since it ain't her time yet.
    Then again, it's not like these things don't happen later on either, like with "KG" and "PC" (just for two easy ones) having a "demo reel" before their more memorable moments in the show either lol.
    Another-another sidenote, about people not spoiling stuff for you:
    This is exactly my biggest gripe with most fandoms. The people who indirectly spoil big stuff for you because it's the "so gooood!!" -stuff for them, and then in the process ruining it for us...
    But Doctor Who fandom is one of the few I've come across that KNOWS the value of keeping the good stuff close to their chests so it'll have the exact same impact on you as it did for them. And thus they don't mention those things much IF AT ALL (or at the very least they get REALLY sneaky and creative about it) despite DESPERATELY wanting to tell you inside.
    And personally I can't thank these people enough. There are just SOOOOoooooo MANY stuff I WANT to talk about with these episodes, but I'd rather want to see your honest blind reaction to 'em more.
    Heck, personally out of the all seasons there was just ONE THING (although a VERY BIG one at that...) which I did get spoiled about EXTREMELY early on and that severly affected my enjoyment of a certain episode. And it's also the reason why a certain build up left me with not as big impact since I already knew the answer...
    For that reason I'm obviously NOT gonna tell you exactly what, but I think people know EXACTLY what I'm talking about when I just say the episode title. ...A Good Man Goes to War. Yes... I was spoiled of that... And to person who did it (not that I remember who it was) I wish you get a nice but BORING pair of socks and underwear from Santa this year!!

    FUN FACT that I don't know if you knew already but i'll say it anyway just in case you don't: Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who and they used it to label tapes of the first season of revived series to try and prevent leaks

    Here we go! This is definitely one of the best season finales in modern Who, and this two-parter still ranks highly for many fans, especially for... well, for reasons we'll get into next week.
    We finally get to see Torchwood after over a season of build-up, and for the first time ever, we get the Daleks and Cybermen in the same story! That surprise reveal at the end is amazing, as is Mickey's surprise appearance. See, one of the advantages of fans running the show is that they start to throw in some things that fans had always wanted to see. E.g. the Daleks meeting the Cybermen.
    Even the Cybermen reveal itself is pretty good - the whole 'ghost' angle means that you don't see them coming.
    Oh and classic Who catch: the Doctor mentions the Eternals, who were a race of cosmic beings that liked to have sailboat races in space to stave off the boredom of their unending existence (I swear I'm not making this up).
    As for your decision to hold off on watching Torchwood for now, I think that's perfectly understandable. Back when you started both Buffy and Doctor Who, I tried to visualise how you'd handle Angel, Torchwood, and God-forbid, The Sarah Jane Adventures on top of everything else.
    Torchwood is an incredible show, especially in its third and fourth seasons, but it's not essential to watch it concurrently with Doctor Who. It does tie in with Doctor Who's season three and four finales, but you can get by without watching Torchwood first. I didn't watch Torchwood properly until years after it aired, and I was fine (my Mum didn't let me watch it because it was too rude 😂). I will say though, the Torchwood show is very different to how you see Torchwood presented here, because it's a different team and a different base, led by a familiar face. So if what you see of Torchwood here doesn't interest you, don't worry because that's not what the show is about.
    Here's to next week Jules, and I'm sorry to say, I'm looking forward to it with a bit of sadistic glee. 😅

    Regarding watching Torchwood, it’s not necessary info for the most part, just side stories (You might find references to characters later on in Dr Who that won’t mean much to you if you haven’t seen Torchwood but it doesn’t really impact your understanding of the larger story - it’ll just seem like somebody shows up that you’ve never seen but is already known to the Doctor). The main reason people would be asking you to insert them before continuing on with Dr Who is that there are crossover bits, so if you save it for later you’d effectively be giving yourself spoilers for certain parts of the Torchwood series.

It was also nice to see Mickey again. Also when the Doctor goes the wrong way out of the room apparently that was a genuine mistake and a ad-lib by Tracy Ann Oberman (Yvonne Hartman). Thanks Jules. You've reached one of the most exciting cliffhangers for a finale of Doctor Who. Love the twist that we are all expecting the Voidship to have something connected with the Cybermen in it, but it turns out to contain Daleks. Jackie being involved is great. Mickey turning up out of nowhere is a brilliant moment. Lots of great performances - Tracy Ann Oberman is excellent as the Torchwood leader - love that scene where the Doctor persuades her to stop the next experiment. I'm also very fond of the scientist guy who is stuck in the room with the voidship.
    Re: Torchwood the series - I'm fond of the series, but if it comes to a choice between watching you react to that or watching you react to Series 3 of Doctor Who, I think I'd prefer Doctor Who - and I think you'd get bigger audience for that compared to Torchwood too - so I think you made the right choice if editing Torchwood reactions would be too much work for you.
    Allons-y to the final episode of S2!

  • @TheFireMonkey

    Torchwood was formed to investigate the supernatural [as Queen Victoria defined it - which would include aliens] and to find ways to protect the British Empire from them. They work independent of other top secret agencies in the world such as UNIT which works hand in hand with the Doctor [UNIT was big in the classic Dr Who, not so involved at this point in the series - likely because they wanted to lay the foundation for the spin off series of Torchwood]

  • @jeremyb5640
    @jeremyb5640 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Jules! I have been watching and really enjoying your reviews of Series Two, but not commented for a while, so I thought I'd better catch up! After two lacklustre episodes, this is a brilliant epic finale - from Rose's chilling pre-credits monologue onwards. I think Russell T Davies remembered what it was like to be a child watching the show and wondering what would happen if the Cybermen ever came up against the Daleks, and thought well, why don't we just include that in the show! What a moment when the Daleks came out of the Sphere.
    The mission statement of Torchwood, as it's seen in this two-parter, was set out by Queen Victoria at the end of 'Tooth and Claw' - when to honour Sir Robert's sacrifice and his father's ingenuity, she ordered the creation of the Institute to help defend Britain from further alien attacks, declaring that “if the Doctor should return, then he should beware, because Torchwood will be waiting.” That’s very different to UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) who worked proactively with the Doctor to foil alien invasions in the sixties, seventies and eighties - and briefly in Christopher Ecclestone’s season.
    As well as the Torchwood series starting after this series of Doctor Who, the pilot for the Sarah Jane Adventures aired then too! You can skip both series and still follow Doctor Who without a problem, even though there is a bit of crossover at times.
    I expect it’s already on your list, but the next episode of Doctor Who after this two-parter was The Runaway Bride, the 2006 Christmas special, before Series 3 started in spring 2007. Definitely don’t miss that one! It's a classic.
    By the way, you may have seen that there is currently a run of brand-new hour-long episodes of Doctor Who to mark the show’s 60th anniversary, airing on the BBC in the UK and on Disney+ everywhere else in the world - with a cash injection from Disney into special effects, etc. Make sure you avoid spoilers at all costs! But plenty to look forward to!

    Hello Jules.💜
    A frighteningly tense time with the Doctor? 🧐
    Good choice for Torchwood, Jules.👍 I tried to watch it after seeing the Doctor Who seasons (sorry... Series) and could only last bit into season 2 or 3 - it was simply sort of boringly repetitious. I know some love it, but that's how it is with fanaticism. And, too, it, as a series, is pretty much different than what you see of them in Doctor Who. If you watched it off channel I don't believe too many would fault you for it. There is no real, as others have stated in the comments, continuity issues, as they are really 2 different shows, each having its own stories. Torchwood this and the Doctor that is about it. Mere name dropping.
    What a beginning for an episode, eh? You, at 3:02, is everyone's unspoiled reaction to this scene, and this is exactly the way a first time viewing should be. 🥲🥲
    And then the surprises just keep on.
    In typical Doctor Who fashion, the scene with the Doctor, and Rose (Jackie), when he pulls her out of the Tardis,😅🤣😂 and we can forget the opening for a bit, as things just build - Mickey, and other things as well.
    It's almost like a Doctor All-Stars event and you've already seen how it goes - good on you for taking a shorter route, giving a Sensible Nod,😉 to some few other's baser instincts. Well Done.😝
    Nothing much more to say here. A top notch season (series, sorry) ender, as Doctor Who does so well. See you next week, for the finale.😍
    Great opening and closing remarks. Very reasonable on both counts.
    Have a good day, Jules. 🤗💜A peaceful evening and lovely tomorrow. I await the next Doctor Who, and your reaction to the tale. Be well.🥰

    yeah as others have said, torchwood isn't essential to understanding any plot in doctor who - and vice versa, actually. ive heard from a few people who watched imports of torchwood having no idea it was a spinoff of another show! so you'll definitely be ok, lol. should watch it at some point though, reaction or not, cause it's a great show in it's own right imo and i feel it's right up your alley.
    as a side note, this episode was directed by graeme harper, who's notable as being the only director of classic dr who to follow on to the new series. TV at the BBC was generally directed very differently back then, compared to even 2006 when this came out, and harper was known for his pretty radical (for the time) methods. he was really great at his job though, both stories he did in the 80s are classics. just a massive talent imo.

    As for spin off series, it certainly helps flesh out the world and characters but it is in no way essential. For example, next season, there's a pretty big plot device that was introduced in the first season of Torchwood but since I was like 7 when that season came out and Torchwood is very much an adult show, I didn't catch up on that until over a decade later and my viewing experience and genuine passion for dr who was not affected at all. So spin-offs, nice but by no means mandatory viewing.

    With the skipping Torchwood, like the spinoff was aimed at older, adult, fans. Whereas Doctor Who is for family/all ages.
    So like when you say about being recommended to watch up to X Torchwood episode before Y Doctor Who episode: the children wouldn't have watched Torchwood (i mean i did as a kid but i shouldn't have/parents would cover my eyes or distract me or something as the really adult/graphic parts happened). and managed to understand the Y Doctor Who episode well enough, so should be fine going into revival Doctor Who S3 & doing Torchwood later.
    Daleks vs Cybermen vs Doctor was something many fans wanted to see on screen. a lot of the Crew of Revival Who (especially the showrunners in charge) were massive super fans of classic who (like technically Revival Who is not too different to fan fiction), especially Russell T. Davies, so Daleks vs Cybermen vs Doctor was huge back in 2006 and was/still is a rare novelty.

  • @MH90
    @MH90 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You absolutely do not need to watch Torchwood to carry on with Doctor Who. There are a couple of future DW episodes where characters appear and it might feel a bit out of nowhere, but it's very much geared for a DW-only audience so you don't need to watch Torchwood to follow anything.

    • @MH90
      @MH90 ปีที่แล้ว

      ... that said, Torchwood is worth a watch, either on your own or on the channel when you've got the time. The first two seasons are quite hit and miss, very much DW-lite, but the third season (which is 5 episodes of a single story) is one of the best things the DW-verse ever did (and pretty much fully disconnected from DW at this point). Series four is... back to just fine.

  • @Madman13K
    @Madman13K ปีที่แล้ว

    So here's the funny thing. The Next Time previews for the episodes were typically run over the closing credits theme. Fear Her, for the first time, used a completely different score for the preview, referenced the Beast's prophecy from the Satan Pit, and generally went out of its way to give a very climactic feel to the whole thing, which at the time felt like an incredibly ominous note to end last episode on and build suspense. However.. in the process they used Rose's opening narration, fired off all her death flags, revealed Torchwood, revealed the Cybermen, and even (accidentally) revealed the Daleks. I definitely feel like you got the better deal going into this completely blind.
    As for Torchwood, pretty much everything you need to know from the spinoff series will come up in Doctor Who before it's important, so you're not missing anything crucial . And I actually think some reveals are going to be more effective this way as well. Annoyingly the only thing I think would be worth knowing in advance is something I can't even hint at without spoiling something you definitely don't want to know in advance, so we'll just have to wait and see how that pans out.

I watched Torchwood way later and it was actually cool to see from an after perspective cos you notice more things with the forsight from doctor who. I shall not say more so as not to spoil things but yeah i think watching it later on is a good decision. Those telling you you should watch this and that episode of Torchwood before this and that episode of doctor who are just trying to be helpful if your wanting to see it in chronological order but they forget its a show about time travel so we can watch it in any order and it is still good :D So what ever works for you will work!

    After Queen Victoria had knighted and "Damed" the Doctor and Rose she banished them because she was so freaked out by the idea of aliens from other planets threatening our Earth. So she founded Torchwood to keep an eye on any sign of alien activity and monitor or maybe even fight it. So far so spoiler free. Where they are at now and whether their remit is basically the same you will have judged for yourself.

    I think it's valid to keep watching Doctor Who rather than going back to watch Torchwood now. Without any real spoilers, Torchwood's first two series fit in between here and the end of Doctor Who Series 3, and the Sarah Jane Adventures starts around this point in the timeline too. I personally didn't see Torchwood until a bit later either (mostly because I was 9, that would not have been an appropriate show for me lol). As much as I'd love to see you react to the spinoffs now (especially the Sarah Jane Adventures, that show plus this one WERE my childhood), scheduling difficulties is a perfectly sensible reason not to, and it'll be nice to go back later and fit the puzzle pieces together.
