This is highly dependent on storage temp, which this fails to mention. The lower the temp, the longer food lasts. Two to three days is pretty short; also depends on how old the meat was when you bought it....

I ate chicken and potato salad that was in my brothers fridge .. a sandwich sized Tupperware container. I was about half ways through it when my sister in law gave me a surprised and 😲 concerned look...she said “I’ve been meaning to throw that out, its a few weeks old!” I looked down and saw little foggy trees growing on it that matched the same color. I am still alive and didn’t get sick in the days that followed.

People get so freaked out about bacteria. Truth is most of the time you will be fine even eating raw meat there is plenty of evidence to this. Actually cooked food that grows bacteria is more dangerous. However you are proof that our bodies can digest alot more than we've been told.

I hear crap like this all the time. If this were the case, how come when I buy raw chicken or meat, it's often stamped with a "sell by" date of a week or more later?

    • @jad3415

I'm in Florida. I camp in a small van some times. it has a small 12v fridge that can run 24x7 at 40F in my simple power setup. Mostly I refrigerate cause the van can get up to 100F inside during the middle of the day . But in our so-called winter, it can get down to 40F some nights. When I does , I have an electric blanket but don't have enough power to run the fridge and the blanket. I know veggies will be fine overnight at around 50F without a fridge, but how about cured ham , left over deep fried chicken with the skin? cheese? left over pizza?

    Can anyone tell me.
I lost the keys of my cars in the parking so the beef sausage and pepperoni I bought which were all ready cooked stayed there from 13 hours without direct sunlight in trunk.
After opening it I was unaware of the fact that you can't re freeze thawed meat I though it's ok to use the meat which is cured and cooked like that. but it was pretty melted and I put it in the freezer it's been a week now. Is it good to eat?

This lady is approaching the question from a "quality" perspective. From a food safety perspective, you never know until you check the actual piece of meat - if you think you don't know, trust yourself, you'll know when meat is unsafe - it's a smell that just seems to register in the brain as a warning... But, even then, the human body can get away with eating some green red meat.

The refrigerator at the grocery that keeps the ground beef is an open fridge, so it seems like it would be harder to maintain that temperature as opposed to your fridge closed in at home. They have expiration dates for a week or more when they put meat out at the grocery. How does theirs last longer in their fridge than in our house?

With such a short span I always end up not being entirely sure in the end. For example if chicken lasts 2 days does that mean I am fine if I buy chicken from the store on Friday and cook it Sunday night? And how long do they typically have the fresh chicken before you buy it?
I just have an odd situation, I cook chicken thighs in a toaster oven so I can do 4 at a time.
I buy packs of about 8 thighs so I do 4 on the day I buy and 4 the day after, however sometimes I get 10 in a package for some reason.
So is it safe to cook the last 2 the next day which should be something like 48-56 hours after I buy it.
I’m probably overthinking but I want to be sure.

I basically live alone, I make a sort of pasta dish from turkey sausage, veggies and pasta shells. I like to make about 3- 4 servings. Trouble is who wants to eat the same this 4 nights in a row? Not me. So I like to stretch it out a little and have my turkey sausage pasta 2 nights, then have a burger and fries then 1 or two more nights of turkey and pasta. My question: DO you think the turkey sausage and pasta would be good for more than 4 nights? The turkey sausage is precooked, I normally get it from the grocery store. I believe it qualifies as "cured" but I'm no expert.
Thank in advance if you can answer my question.

My mother taught me, when in doubt, before you wash it, Always smell test first then, rub your fingers across the chicken and if it feels more slippery than normal coming out of the package, It's probably bad ! It doesn't sound delectable, but I believe I heard her telling my cousin if it feels the least bit of slime to it 🤢 Throw it out. Cured my appetite for the day 😁 I also learned that if any meat smells like ammonia, It's definitely gone bad, especially fish and shellfish. I also learned in the summertime, keep your unedible meat in the fridge until Trash Day or your trash can will Reek soo Bad, You'll regret it 🤢 A smell you will never forget 🤮 Plus it could attract animals drawn to smelly foods. Good luck, " Bon a Potit " Ohh and Salt Overnight does act as slight preservative for chicken or brine at Thanksgiving for a Turkey for baking or deep frying 😋

I have a question. If raw ground beef can only be used within 2 or 3 days in your refrigerator at home after purchase, then why is there sometimes an expiration date in the fridge at the grocery store for 2 weeks? I bought raw organic grass fed ground beef (sealed in an air tight package) 7 days ago and it has been in my fridge since then. The expiration date still has a week left to go (on the package). So, would this meat still be good to cook now? It's been in my fridge for a week, but has not reached the expiration date and the meat is still red.

"Anything that's been cooked, usually has about 2 to 3 days of a lifespan in your refregerator."
BS!!! Anybody who does meal prep for the week knows cooked food will keep longer than that. Any food I cook for reserve in the fridge gets thrown out by day 7 if not eaten, or I'll freeze it by day 5 or 6 if I know it won't be eaten.

They don't address unopened packages from the store that have been kept refrigerated and have a sell/freeze by date that's up to a week away.
I think they seal the package in a way to prevent bacteria from growing as rapidly...the air/gas they use, or vaccuum sealing it.
In my experience, as long as I keep these sealed packages unbroken and refrigerated, they are fine in that state up to that expiration date. That gives me time to buy it in advance, then on meal prep day I can open the package and cook or freeze as needed. I do go straight home and put perishables away immediately--thats also important.
I do meal prep for myself only, so I do have just enough space to meal prep for a whole week. I have one day each week set aside to cook everything, and almost all of those meals hold up well in the fridge for that length of time. (Fish/shell-fish are cooked within a day of thawing; fresh packages are cooked immediately upon opening the seal on the package; and any fish dishes are eaten within 2 days of cooking.)
Part of food safety is being aware of how to store it. After cooking, I plate each meal individually (except for soups/stews/pies). Plating means putting it on an actual dinner plate, or one meal in its own individual covered container or in a shallow metal platter lined with parchment paper. Each item has an airtight lid on it if in a container, or a tight seal of aluminum or saran wrap. If it is a liquid like soup or stew, I put a piece of saran wrap on the surface, touching the food, before putting the lid back on the cookware (enamel lined so there's less reactivity during storage); that additional seal helps keep the surface from drying out or letting air flow over the food. Packaging things up in this way holds moisture in so food doesn't dry out, and is a slight barrier to any bacteria circulating in the airflow inside the fridge, as well as limiting food contact with air, which can help bacteria grow faster. I also keep my fridge at 37-38 degrees to delay food spoilage, and after the cooked, packaged meals have cooled a little while (not long at all--maybe 5-10 minutes for most things), they go straight into the fridge, in the back of the fridge if possible, since it stays cooler there. Putting hot items straight into the refrigerator can raise the temperature considerably, which can contribute to spoilage, and I don't know that everyone is taught that.
When I'm ready to eat, some dishes get heated up in the microwave uncovered except for a splatter shield, this is usually the items plated on a plate or in a plastic, microwave-safe dish.(I'll convert to glass when I find some that can be nested when stored in the cabinet! My kitchen is tiny.) The ones on metal trays lined in parchment are reheated in the oven--and can go straight from fridge to oven to table.
When I food prep, if I have extra than what I know I'll need for the week, I will freeze it the same day it is cooked, or the next day at the latest, using a vaccuum sealer with the appropriate plastic. I seal these as individual meals as well, label and date. A part of my freezer is reserved for this overflow of single serving meals, so I can pull one out, let it thaw overnight in the fridge, and reheat/eat it easily if needed. I will cycle these meals out from time to time and intentionally make extra to replenish it.
All that said--I eat mostly very simple meals. I usually get 3-4 different cooked dishes finished in one morning, and can thoroughly clean the kitchen after lunch. It makes more sense to me than cooking every day or dirtying up the kitchen every day, and makes it easier to eat on busy days, packing lunch is a breeze, and I have more awareness/control over nutritional content. I have learned that some meals need certain parts to be made fresh just before serving: things like spaghetti or fettuccine. (Pasta for mac m cheese, pasta salad will keep well if covered well.) Salads are also made fresh, although the greens are washed, dried, and stored in a sealed container between layers of paper towels, which is refreshed as needed; it lasts a week if not longer when stored this way.
Consistent attention to packaging and temperature help food last longer. Don't leave a cooked meal on the stove for half an hour while you eat--make it a natural step in cooking to package and refrigerate it without letting it stand out for long. Thaw food in the refrigerator--not on the counter, under water, in the microwave. Part of my planning means to pull frozen meat from the freezer to the fridge in time so it's fully thawed when I need it--for some blocks of meat, this can mean 2-3 days in the fridge to thaw.
I'm not an expert--so follow whatever guidelines you feel more comfortable with. I've never had foodbourne illness in all the time I've been doing meal prep--which would be about 30 years, intermittently, as I started doing it when I was a working college student. And I, too, always go by the rule--when in doubt, throw it out--if ever a meal I've made tastes the least bit "off" to me, I won't eat it. There haven't been many such meals I've had to toss, thankfully. I've also learned over time what meals work best for meal prep, which last longer---and which ones need more care, earlier consumption, or just don't keep well and must be made fresh.
I know there are lots of people out there who know much more about preserving food than I do. One day I hope to learn how to use a pressure cooker, and then a pressure canner, and possibly can fully cooked meals in mason jars--which supposedly can be stored on a shelf in the pantry, unrefrigerated, for an extended time.
Videos like this, I think, are meant to be helpful--food will certainly spoil quickly if not stored in the right way and at the right temperature. But the methods of storing food is more detailed than a quick video like this wants to get into--and they choose to err on the side of being overcautious to help prevent lesser informed cooks from making critical errors.
One thing that always fascinated me about meat storage, is that it all goes through a bit of an aging process before it is really edible/flavorful. (NOT fish!) Think about it, between initially slaughtering the animal and draining it, the carcass goes into industrial refrigerators "to rest" so the meat will soften up, then at a later time gets butchered/packaged/shipped (the order of that depending on the middleman). So the food we get at the grocery store already has at least several days and several types of handling. Some foods, like fine steaks, boast of even longer aging times to help develop the flavor. In other words--do a bit more studying if you don't know and worry about how long a food is good for.

      THESEEKER Desperate
In Samoa, we would regularly leave meals out on the counter for entire days. Depends on how heavily salted or seasoned. I have two steaks and a couple of pork chops in my kid’s fridge that came with a meal delivery service (I don’t have a fridge). These, however, are vacuum sealed. Contrary to popular belief, even mayonnaise does not really need to be refrigerated as long as you have it in a squeeze container and do not touch it with your hands. Cook the meat well. My brother in law thought the kefir I had fermenting was “bad milk”, and would never touch sauerkraut or pickles unless store bought. The FDA acts at the behest of the food lobbyists, from whom we are in much more danger. When I raised my own chickens, I would collect the eggs, but never wash them until I was ready to use them, they sat on the counter, never in the fridge. The same protective coating that keeps the egg “alive”, protects it from bacteria. Our meat these days is poorly processed in unsanitary conditions. If you want to stay safe, spend more money on quality....you’ll spend less on hospital bills.

This reheating only once thing is just industry standard but in real life, people reheat cook meat or anything as many times as they wish & it's safe. Fact: I have seen in Africa where people would store cooked meat, smoked fish for months until magnets come out of it - still they would clean, reheat it at 75 to 85 degrees, serve & eat it as much as you may panic, yet, no food poisoning or stomach cancer :) If anything would bother their stomachs, it's mosquito born malaria so there you go. Not even an anthropologist really knows nothing. If you wanna go extreme, in life threatening anger, humans are know for reheating shoe leather years after it left the cobbler's oven! I have worked in restaurants where we regularly wet aged beef sirloin roasts for up to sic weeks intentionally. Be sanitary, keep it cold, keep it sealed and your meat can last much longer than this video states.
