  • This is my first historical animation, finished in September 2013. It was on a separate channel for 9 years but it's time I put it in my archive! A video describing Columbus' journeys to America and the consequences that forever followed. I will be uploading a newer version of this saga with better animation and edited historical info. Please enjoy!

Not really, considering that several other ethnic groups made it to America before he did. (Vikings, Inuit, west Africans, etc.) On top of that, you can’t even discover a place that already existed. Finally, the Moors gave him the map that he used to get to America anyway…

I think this is a good video. It acknowledges Colombus' good and bad qualities, without exaggerating either of them. I also like the statement at the end that, if he never sailed west, someone else would have. I don't like how so many paint him as uniquely evil - at worst he was just a conquistador like the dozens who led expeditions after him.
One thing I'd change about this video is to mention how the Encomandita system, which became prevalent through the Spanish New World, seems to be based on medieval European serfdom - which at the time of the first voyage had only been abolished in Iberia for twenty years.

“Don’t discover anything” is an uneducated take. At the time he thought he made it all the way to Asia/India. They literally had no idea that 2 continents existed until Columbus bumped into them.
Unlike the Vikings and possibly even China on the northwest side, Columbus established a lasting contact between the two continents & he was the first to do it. That’s why he is famous.
Turns out things that were normal 500 years ago, such as claiming land for the King and seizing gold & slaves aren’t normal anymore.
Never forget it was the Muslims who controlled the land route to Asia that caused Spain to look west and find the Americas waiting there. Thanks Mohammedans!

Spreading the Christian religion was so central to Columbus' thoughts that I wonder why it is left out. But I have noticed this often in reading history: While God was never far from the thoughts of many in the past, He could hardly be further from those of historians in the present. And many of the latter care more about moral preening than in describing those in the past in terms they or those who knew them might have agreed with.
    Thumbs down for me.
