FMA is quite popular. The Brotherhood version (which is the most recent) is the most popular because it is the original one that tells the story that the author wrote until the end of the manga. FMA: Brotherhood was considered by many people to be the best anime of all time for many, many years.
The 2003 version of FMA (the one you saw) diverges from the author's original story because the anime was ahead of the manga's publication at the time. For this reason, FMA: Brotherhood was released in 2009 to tell the story as it is in the manga. A cool curiosity is that the manga was written by a woman.
However, since it is an old anime, it does not have the same engagement as recent anime, so you will not get many views, except for a few key episodes.
But FMA: Brotherhood is an anime that deserves to be watched.
