- I built an 009 narrow gauge Micro train layout that will be powered by a crank powered generator and placed in a square glass display case for safe keeping. The layout also is able to be self-powered through a super capacitor that is charged by the 50-rpm motor converted generator. The theme is a mine train loosely based on the 7 dwarfs.

Something like this at a kids museum to teach the basics of electricity would be amazing.
I agree, that would be great!
Thanks for watching, much appreciated!
This little layout gives me mid Sodor railway vibes from the railway series. 😊🤭 I love it!
Thanks!
Cool project and nicely presented video. Lots of planning, work, time, and figuring out.
Appreciate that! Yes they all take lots of time to plan and experiment. I would say for me personally I spend 75% of the time thinking, planing and experiments prior to building. Once I start building it go fairly quick. Then if I hit a road block in the building there is more thinking and solving. I love the whole process.
Thanks for watching!
Miniatur yang keren dan mengagumkan...
Thank you!! Apreciated!
Super. I am glad that I let the Electric Company do my cranking for me, or my trains wouldn't be operated near as often. 💙 T.E.N.
🤣, Thank you! Appreciate!!
Wow, this is an outstanding project! Love it!
Thanks!! Appreciate it!
They make flashlights like that.
I have one,. you wind it up for 30sec.
And it's good for some time. 5$ 20yrs old.. Still works. I believe they make radios like that too.
No batteries.. Want to get one.
Ps. Like your train man,.. pretty cool.
Looks like you had a lot of fun making it,..and do after. Thanks for showing.

Thanks!
This reminds me of this one coin operated truck and train I once saw at a truck stop
Cool!
You, sir, are an artist. Kodos.
Thanks!!🙂
Wow. What ingenuity! Great idea with the reed switches. Cheers from eastern TN
Thanks, appreciate!!
This sounds like it would be pretty durable. Even if the super cap went bad it would still work with the crank
Yes, and it’s easy to replace parts as they are exposed under the case.
It’s my mistake used train layout, I crank it every time I’m near it. It’s addicting😀.
Quite charming. If the gems could appear in the truck, whilst parked in the mine and then cascade down the cliff at the top of the train run they could be endlessly collected and delivered.
That would be nice!
Always magical Peter, thanks so much for showing us. Great vid mate.
🙏, appreciated!
This is very nice. you are a terrific craftsman.
Thank you sir! I appreciate that!
Hervorragende Arbeit. Danke für'S Zeigen. tiptop
Your welcome, thanks for watching, very much appreciated!
Great idea, outstanding project.

Had no idea Dwarves were that small😜
😀
Very cool Peter!
Thanks!
That’s some amazing work!
Thank you for sharing this.
Thanks!
Snow White is just living her best life.
She is,😁. Thanks for watching!
Delightful!! What a joy.
Thanks!
Love the small England’s
Love it too, thanks for watching!
Super interesting, great idea, well executed. Now I’m off to work the springtime surprise. 🏰 🏃♂️
Thanks Alan! Will be down there this summer and again next spring for the princess run.
@@PeterWaldraff , see you in the field house. 😊
Wow. That’s incredible. I might have to get back into trains. Wouldn’t it be cool to make a coffee table like that?
Yesss, that would be cool!🤫
Thanks for watching!
That is such an awesome design! Love it!
🙏!
Love it
🙏, I will try.
Great project. Very unique idea
Thanks!
Made my day.
Glad to, thanks!
Ingenious, great talking point, great educational device and beautifully done too👍💜😊
Wow!
Thank you very much ,appreciated!
Thanks for watching.
@@PeterWaldraff 👍✌️😊💜👍
@@musoseven8218 Thanks!!
Great 👌 idea
Thanks!
A turntable at either end of the track would be cool.
Yes, that would be cool.
Gems. Jewels.
Tomato. Tomato.
👍😀
Very nice, great job!
Thank you!
This is so cool
Thanks!!
This is brilliant, I love it.
Thank you 🙏!
This stuff is awesome.

Thank you and thank you for subscribing!
Awesome!
Thanks!
Masterful!
Much appreciated! Thank you for watching.
look great mate! if there an train expo coming up you should show off the case!
That is a good idea, I actually have never been to a show before.
Thanks for watching!
Great model railroad, please share/ teach me more. I get electrical basics but "electronics make my head spin. Love the theory put to practice. Oof love to play with more electronics on my model railroad. Great work and fun. Can I crank it uphill next?
Ha, yes, thanks!!
I was originally planning on explaining the wiring in more detail. Maybe I’ll do one in the next few weeks.🙏
I made that video of the electronics🙂:

Really, really nice and well done! :-D
Thank you!
Great idea using a latching relay. I was wondering how the caps managed to hold the relay without discharging haha
I will release a video on the schematic soon, but for now, when the relay is latched I added a resistor in series with the relay to limit the current draw. This can be done after it is latched because to maintain a latch you only need to 1/10th(aprox.) the latching voltage before it drops off.
You should have progreammed the point to point reversing relay with a PAUSE mode at the end of the point. So the train stops and wait few seconds at the ends.
Yes, good point. I did think of that during the design, but then opted to keep it as simple as possible. I think I might be able to accomplish that delay with a capacitor. I will have to experiment. Good comment, thanks for the input! Thank you for watching!!
Using Joules to dig jewels.
Clever use of the words, yes, literally what is happening. Thanks for watching!🙂
Nice video, Like ! ! !
🙏 Thanks!!
the gems arent meant to be in the tender unless the gems are fuel for the loco
True, but in this case they are sharing duties with coal and gems🤷♂️😀. I should get a separate mine car and attach. Thanks for watching!🙂
what track are you using? ive been interested in making a tram layout for a long time and the sharp curves are what im looking for
I am using Kato 6” and 4 an 5/8” radius track. Thanks for watching!
cool
Thanks!
nice❤
Thanks
Absolutely amazing! What motor/generator have you used?
Thanks!! I been experimenting with the Grearistan motors from Amazon. I tried 4 different motors, the 50 rpm seem to have the best overall for providing enough voltage per revolution of the crank and with not much force to turn the crank. I also tried the 3 rpm, that one I could not get to turn. The 100 RPM was okay but needed to be rotated fast, and last the 20 RPM was much harder to turn but with a longer crank shaft may work good.
Why don't you cut a hole in the plexiglass, extend the track at the top to go to the right and around the corner and down and connect to your turnout?
Intresting thought, but would interfere with the turning of the crank, Could work
If I rotated the layout 90 degrees counter clockwise though. I like ithe way it is now but your idea would be cool.
Thanks for the feedback!
Wow! An electric track?
Hmmm, could something like that have allowed early trains to have electrical telegraph (or hey, even telephone) before the days of radio?

🤔Interesting, maybe!
Thanks for watching!
Very impressive, but I can’t figure out how your circuit works? Did you use a latching relay? Is the cap and resistor connected to the relay coil there to keep it held on( if so how does it get time to charge?)
There does not appear to be a fly back diode across the relay coil?
Tia
Here is a video of the circuit. I think it will answer all your questions.

@@PeterWaldraff thank you
@@PeterWaldraff brilliant the circuit is different to the one in the first video , this one makes perfect sense thank you for sharing your excellent work.
@@paulmeynell8866 yes, made a few changes. Very observant. Thanks for the comments.
It would be nice to use solar to power as well.
Agreed, that would be cool.
I mean I would buy it but I don’t have money 😅 is that the cherry steamer?
Haha,
Yes, it is red.
Are you going to build a full circuit soon it would be cool to see the train move while running off of a compasstor.
I did include and it does run from a capacitor when I flip a switch under the case. I show it in the video.
Question: why do you need a bridge rectifier when you generate power from a brushed DC motor? .
I do that because I wanna charge the super capacitor by going forward or reverse, and the polarities would change when I do so. This will ensure a charge in both directions.
@@PeterWaldraff I see.
wat scale is it i am gonna buy a n scale but i have just 75 euro' s
The engine is 009 and it runs on kato n gauge track. Kato’s Pocket line series would be perfect on a budget. Thanks for watching!
@@PeterWaldraff tysm
That locomotive is a small England class and question why have you put the gems in the tender
I get it’s not accurate but it’s pretend, I am using it as a dual fuel and gem removal🤷♂️😀. I do plan on getting a mine car to attach. Good question thanks for watching!
Your welcome might I suggest a bacman quarry hunslet
I will check it out, thanks!
how much.
Hard to put a price on it, 🤔. If your serious, I need to think about it. Send me an email petewaldraff@gmail.com if serious.
Thanks!
@@PeterWaldraff no, I wasn’t serious lol. I just thought it looked really cool
No problem, thanks for watching!!
