    I am sure I speak for all 40,000+ residents of Varosha who were displaced by the Turkish army on the morning of 14th August 1974, when I say that the feeling of seeing your home for the first time in 44 years is beyond words - I am reduced to tears. Peter, TOTAL respect to you sir both as a drone pilot and secondly for turning the spotlight to our long forgotten abandoned "ghost" city of Varosha. I hope you don't mind if I share this video around...

      If they wont let you back home Alexis they should at least fill it with the so called migrants fleeing their homes instead of them invading Europe.

    • @alexis1959
      @alexis1959 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      They have already flooded the remainder of the invaded land with 100s of thousands of immigrants from mainland Turkey. Varosha has deliberately been left empty by the Turks to be used as a bargaining chip in the event of an agreement that involves the Turks returning any part of the invaded land back. Cyprus (before the invasion) comprised 80% Greek Cypriots, 12% Turkish Cypriots and the remaining 8% Armenian, Maronite, British etc. After the invasion Turkish is in control of 37% of the land - as the Turkish "component" was only 12%, land concessions would almost certainly be part of any agreement hence why Varosha is been kept empty...

      Alexis, I was eight years old when this happened - living in America - and Peter's videos serve as the first time that I have heard of this black spot on history. I cannot even imagine what this time must have been like for you, your family, and so many others. If it brings me to tears gazing down at all those empty residences, imagine the tears it must have caused you. God Bless!

    HI Peter, well you did manage to get most of what you wanted to film and from 99% of the reactions from your followers its all good now at one point you looked worried I know and most of the pilots here also know what that feels like when you get told that you have no signal wow, but it did keep going and you did get the video you wanted Fair Play to you Peter, regards TJK UK.

    Thank you for this, although it breaks my heart. It's so difficult to get your bearings from the video, and so much has changed, including my perceptions as I was just an 8 year old child in 1974. I lived on the edge of an abandoned orange grove near the corner of Jules Verne Avenue. The grove seemed huge to me as a child, but it probably wasn't. Amazing how your perceptions change

    Seems on the way out, the altitude was dropping all the time - was that set in Litchi intentionally, or is that an error? May explain the signal loss. When RTH started, it climbed back up again significantly and stayed there. Whichever, its amazing footage :) Great stuff!

    After all the comments about how Turkey is justified because a 100 year old treaty was unfair, I can't help but think that means EVERY treaty ever made must be unfair if that is true. Society cannot revert to times old border disputes. The Turkey invasion if meant to protect Turkish citizens should have stopped there. That means it was a land grab not a security issue. The current authoritarian regime will likely do nothing so this town goes empty. This is nonsense. The people who bought land on Cyprus from the British should get their property back. However, it seems that Turkey looted and destroyed much of the land. A 46 year stalemate only proves that Turkey did not have good intentions.

    They must be maintaining some of the roads, because they would have been over grown after all these years and you wouldn’t be able to see them.
    But it’s also Strange how turkey have held on to this for no apparent reason and the European Union have not stepped in to say, enough is enough now. Give it back. Pointless waste....
