  • Back in the day I had a cassette recorder with a very cheap and awful mechanism, and now I got the chance of explaining why is that so bad for recording and playing cassettes.
It was from a very cheamp #boombox with erasing head made of permanent magnet.
The cassette audio quality could, and should be much higher than played back onto this kind of player or recorder.
If you have one of this type of deck mechanism, leave me a comment with your thought.

I have met this mechanism many times and in machines by National, Panasonic, Aiwa... honestly I don't think it's all that bad for ordinary consumer machines. Changing the belts is a bit of a pain due to the amount of disassembly required and it's not easy to clean up if the belts turn to tar. But, the biggest problem is the clutch assemblies which are not great quality so the retaining cap splits and the clutch comes apart and that's the end of that deck until someone fixes it. I keep spares from any decks that are otherwise junk. All the best.

Yes, I think I have changed the belts once. I appreciate the mechanism lasted so many years, but after seeing so many other great mechanisms, I thought this one is awful. I also have seen another one very similar to this one but with a much better auto stop and with a proper electric eraser head, and that one was also cheap like this one - so for kinda the same money you could get something much better, that one was also a doubke deck from a no-name boombox. I was upset for the eraser head ruining everything I recorded on that machine.
Thanks for your comment, It's nice to see other opinions here. Cheers!

A lot of boomboxs from mid eighties onwards have this type of cassette mech .
My Hitachi 3d8 super woofer has them and their a world away from my sharp gf9191 or my Hitachi 8180 from the seventies proper solid mechanisms.

@@peterperry1583 Yes, there are very good mechanisms out there, but... not this one :). I have a Sharp GF-500 and a Sharp GF-700 - night and day quality difference from this one I have presented.
