She is so unbelievably captivating here, I honestly can't even believe it. She's mesmerizing. Her poise, genuineness, charm as you noted and absolutely her beauty were just so unique and inviting. I really can think of just a few performers/humans that gave me this effect. It goes to show when a human personality/talent is invested in and given a large platform how truly influential and iconic they can become. Maybe some of it was manufactured and nurtured, but there's always been a sincereness to her that I think is embedded deeply in her soul. I believe it comes from the maturity she had to develop having had such struggles growing up. Always will be one of my favorites.

It's not strain at all! If anything, it's actually the opposite! It requires almost no strain from the vocal cords. I hate when people confuse whistle register with whisper register! Two different things, whistle vs falsetto! Also hate the term whisper register. Makes zero sense! Airy falsetto doesn't sound like whispers at all!

I think most of our biggest superstars from before American Idol and all those shows not to mention social media would not have made it had these platforms existed then. Because finding talent and discovering talent was just such a rarer and different experience back then from the absence of exposure that most people who did sing had. We’re now so exposed to how many people have extraordinary talents that these great voices from the past really stand out for their marketed signatures more than their actual greatness. Except for very few exceptions like Aretha, Whitney and Mariah and others but still, so many of these tv show contestants and online unknowns can sing as well as many of our biggest stars. I think Mariah’s greatest talents are truly her writing and producing skills really as she often says herself. Her whistle register is so Mariah than nobody can even do it without being called a copycat although many people can do it. But her freakishly impossible vocals on Outside or Lead the way (listen to the a capellas) couldn’t have been performed live. Those impossible breath to full register in a single word transitions were only possible with the magic of engineered studio editing which is why she suffers impossible live scrutiny now. Her tone is gold of course and her technique is the result of countless years of singing and working but the physical demands of maintaining it and wanting to push the magic so far in the studio after Daydream (Forever and I Still Believe were the beginning of impossible studio creations) made for an impossible thing to maintain. She created generations of insanely precise singers like Tori Kelly or Ariana Grande (and Beyoncé as well) but was never really able to recreate her studio recordings live without insanely intricate pre recorded stuff. The pressure of living up to the hype must have been psychological anthrax too. She is a genius creator in all cases and probably the most influential singer of all time at this point.
