Thanks for the understandable explanation. Tunnel diodes also exist in multi-junction solar devices, where they are used to separate the different normal p-n junctions of the multi-junction solar cell. There they are oriented in the opposite direction with respect to the orientation of the normal p-n junctions of the solar cell's layers, but due to the tunneling current, don't block the overall photocurrent. At least that's how I understand it.
