We compare the graphics of the Batman Return to Arkham Remaster on PS4 with Original Arkham Asylum on PS3. Batman Return to Arkham is a remaster of Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City to bring those two games to current gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One. It improves the graphics of both games and includes all DLCs, Skins, Story Missions, Challenge Modes and native 1080p resolution.

They improved the textures and lighting effects but some of the dark grittiness of the original has been lost. It’s really noticeable in the first cutscene.

It uses the ingame render for the cutscenes in ps4 while ps3 has pre made, they did this so getting out of cutscenes would be way smoother.
They succeeded in the in-game, but failed in the cutscenes!!!

I actually like the darker tone of the original version.
I think it fits better with the grim context of the game and the environment.

Stop being bias the original version is outdated with shitty textures, lighting, particle effects ect compared to remastered. The ONLY reason to say you like the original one better is so you won't have to play the remastered which is why people say stupid shit "I LIKE THE ORIGINAL" its a cop out. Josue Leyva I think batman games have usually a dark murky looks and with the changes in lighting it takes away some of the things that just blend well with the dark look it's a similar case to San Andreas on the ps2 vs the other ports the removal of the orange sunset and sun flare gave the game a nice touch

However, you can't really tell by just viewing it on YT. You'd have to see it by playing it first hand and see it on HD TV before you can make a fair judgement of it. Really, the difference is negligible when watching it here. Plus, I'd like to know if the PS4 part of it, is on a normal PS4 console, or on a PS4 pro. Would you know?
how do yall think the PS3 ver. looks better!? The atmosphere looks almost the same as it was originally. Only thing I c wrong with it is the Joker (which isnt tht bad), Gordon (holy hell he looks soft as hell. Must be using baby lotion. :P) and Batmans gloves.
Andrew S I disagree completely. Everything in this remaster changes the atmosphere of the original. That might be fine for some, then again some people's ideal steak might be a banquet salisbury steak. Personally, I want Rocksteady's original vision, not whatever hack dev they have working on this remaster. Also worth noting, the PC original still looks great and maintains the essence of the original.
This is so inconsistent. Sometimes I find myself going "the PS3 version looks so much better, what were they thinking on the PS4?" Other shots it's "the PS4 version looks amazing, no contest."

I think the main issue was the lighting. The lighting and filter for the remastered version really made the character models look bad in the cuteness. And it did seem they took some of the facial details away.

I'd say with both this and especially City, PS3 had better character models but PS4 had much better environments. Everything from redone textures to added polygons and detail. If there were like a PC port that allowed you to mod the old character models into the new environments, it'd be the best of both worlds.

Agree! I hate each version of Unreal Engine, but the way Rocksteady used the UE3 in BatmanAA was masterful.
If only Rocksteady did the remaster, it'd capture the feel of the Asylum.

God of war looks pretty good to this day but that's because of the artistic direction and camara angles it uses plus the fact cutscenes aren't ingame (as batman arkham asylum which is why it looks better on ps3 cutscene-wise)

The original is darker and grittier, which I think makes it look a little better, but the remastered has better lighting for most other games. I just think the darker environment really appeals to the batman games
Gameplay visuals looks much better in the Remaster. Cut scenes look a bit odd.
Cutscenes on the PS4 were being shown at real-time which means it was using actual in-game assets and not pre-rendered models like the PS3 ver. did (plus it was shown as a video on PS3)

i feel like the comic strip looking charm of arkham asylum was lost, you just cant top that specific lighting that PS3 had in that first cutscene.

No, it's not. The PS4 version's cinematics are still pre-rendered.
Some of it looks worse.. The lighting is too bright and some of the characters are more cartoosh looking. Jokers eyes are almost glowing for example. Gordon's glasses are much faker looking.. Over all I suppose its better but it feels like those materials should have been tweaked for the new engine more.
Can we please get a port of this game in the Nintendo Switch?! I mean it can obviously handle it
Arkham city & arkham origins came out for the Wii U.
These games are on unreal engine 4 too which the Nintendo switch natively supports. Maybe they're porting batman Arkham knight to unreal engine 4 to bring over the full collection.

From unreal engine 3 to unreal 4. Sure the animations and backgrounds look sharper but, it’s the shadows and color correction that’s all wrong!
They didn’t even bother going through the games to deepen the shadows or enhance the color hue where they would need to (particularly on character faces) and desaturate them where ever not needed. The shadows are important for Batman to reflect the noir look of his comics origin. Rocksteady must have gone through a pain staking process to make sure those details work for ever frame of their games and it is not respected here.
It really is like someone just reimplemented the game’s code into a new engine and called it a day.
Seriously, if I had access to the game’s software and the latest unreal engine I could have done this my self! A whole studio got paid for this?? Na man someone just collected a check.

I don’t like how in the remaster the moon and overall colour wasn’t like that tint of green. It was pretty cool especially when you first get out of intensive treatment
If it could somehow have the PS3 cutscenes, and the PS4 gameplay...it would literally be peak perfection.
Edit: And them making the moon more white in PS4 is horrible. The oversaturation of green really sold the PS3 version of the game. It felt ominous...almost kind of eldritch. Making the moon more "realistic" really hurt the atmosphere of the game.
You could try to change some settings on your tv/monitor, I’ve done this a few times for other games/movies, for instance I’ve done it to make it b&w noir, and changing some of the saturation setting to make green pop out more and tint the screen

Overall I prefer the PS3 version because of the cutscenes and dark atmosphere, The gameplay in the PS4 version looks better.
In ps3 they used pre-rendered scenes for cinematics, in ps4 they used real time animations which have lower quality.

I like the darker, less clean PS3 version more. The graphics seem more crisp
If you like put the ps3 cutscenes in the remastered version, it would be perfect.
I like the original but I like the remastered a little bit more. Basically for the environment, textures, the rain effect and they added some burn marks on Batman's suit when you first get outside of the asylum.

Nope. The joker and Gordon models look really bad on the PS4 for some reason.
Basically WB thought how to make quick buck and squizze the most out of Arkham Knight, so they hired modders to copy paste Arkham Knight textures, particles and meshes
The shadows and shading in the initial cutscene really make the difference in the OG vs the remaster. Also, how could the hair particle graphics get that much worse?!
PS3 looks better mostly, but some parts look better on ps4. I'll just stick with my ps3 versions of the game.

how do u think the PS3 ver. looks better!? The atmosphere looks almost the same as it was originally. Only thing I c wrong with it is the Joker (which isnt tht bad), Gordon (holy hell he looks soft as hell. Must be using baby lotion. :P) and Batmans gloves.
jeff peake can I know why do ppl need to care whether it's pre rendered or real time. end of the day, isn't whatever works as long as it looks prettier?

couldn't think of a name i have ps3 version and ps4 version... The cut scenes is better on a ps3...but the gameplay graphics especially the details ps4 win..
I prefer the PS3 version. The shadows look better on the UE4 version but the overall presentation looks odd.
not even on unreal 4 is an upscale port of the OG game

In my opinion this is more like a remake in some textures, lighting, and shadows.
It’s not just the resolution and frame rate.
Joker's hair due on PS4 looks like Nikocado Avocado's hair.
There is a HUGE difference between the two, and I really like what they've done in the remaster. Impressive stuff.
The PS4 obviously looks great, but I have to say that the PS3 version looks really fantastic for the hardware. It's easy to sneeze at the last gen graphics.
PS3 truly showed the game better.

Environments look better, but character models look much, much worse.
