  • Well, it's 13 years late in arriving, but at last here's my long-promised "better" instructional video. Still rather long, but there's no time wasted in this one, or very little anyway. I appended both my chord diagrams and the chord progression chart at the end for a screenshot if desired.
I organized this into 5 "chapters"::
    0:00 Intro
    0:50 The 5 Essential Chords
    3:00 Right-Hand Strum
    4:24 The Chord progression
    5:52 Single-string runs
and a "coda" with the 12-string starting at 10:20

Thanks so much, Alonzo. This was my Mom's favorite song when it first came out. She passed away from alzheimer's recently. I've been so sad but laughed and giggled at the thought of playing this on my 12 string. She would have loved you.

I just got me an old Ovation 1658 12 fret 12 banger because this song wouldn’t leave me alone. I had to fix the 44 year old guitar first but now I can learn the song and go out and play it for groups of old people (my peers). Thanks!

I don’t care about the content (which is still good) I only care that an old man has over 1 thousand subscribers. He deserves everyone of them

Alonzo.... mate... brilliant Thankyou. I’m an old 12 stringer from way back simply because I’ve always loved the sound of the instrument. So thanks for refining your original training because I recon I can get this one down now. Cheers

l just got myself a 12 this week and Copt this song in under five minutes got the first guitar
down exactly as the recording was quite surprised really as it sounds much more complex than I actually is
I guess thats the beauty of a 12 string, will have to get me some finger picks as I noticed in that
old TV recording the rooftops both guitarists where using them to good effect. player on the right
employing a strange stabbing on off technique against that regular pattern picking by the left handed player
is that stab arpeggio the trick to bring out the melody
it sounds like one of the players is in a drop D tuning and I know a drop D capo trick I use on my 6 string
which i used on the 12 it still works perfect.. it's amazing what you can get out of a 12 I guess thats why
so many of the old blues players used them there are some sweet sounds to be had..

    • @alonzogarbanzo
      @alonzogarbanzo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Well, I must respectfully disagree about the tuning, because when the Rooftops played the Troubadour, I was in the front row and watched Eric and Bill play their two Gibson B45-12s onstage. Both of them in "A" positions. You can't effectively play this arrangement in drop-D, and I play about half of what I do in Drop-D---trust me.

      @@alonzogarbanzo
can't argue with that. Al can't argue (...)
but I did say trick and a kind of a drop D
so how do you get a drop while still in
standard so go figure it out...easy
low tune to D standard and partially
capo on the 2nd fret there you go
and you got an A. the trick is you
also got a regular G7 as well as a
drop D in fact you got all th cowboy
chords plus a walking bass when you want...yes a trick when you don't have
a second guitar or a bass to cover that bit of the tune.. and you can do lead
easy peas and yes I'm new to a twelve
string just this week started.. but
6 string i been at it for 50 odd yrs
its nothing but a hobbie with me tho!?
and where I live we never see or I never
will pay to see talent or even
real great talent (everyday) not to say
there ain't no talent round here
though yes I did see Charlotte church
up close singing karaoke in some
pub in Cardiff and what a voice
      and a lovely girl..very lucky I was
I though being unaware of her talent
being found she was locally renowned
my old boss said sit your in for a treat?
she was about to hit it big become a
      world renowned star..wow
and down Aberdare an round and up
the hill you got the stereophonics not my cup of tea to be honest though I talked with their drummer Stewart before they hit fame, as well, we where employed in the same small factory aye.
So it's lucky you are to have seen and talked to
them rooftop people aye very talented
people.. and there you go the place is full of talents of various sorts
and we can see it here on this the youtube
me I'm a Welsh hillbilly who hates leaving the village or using the bus
so I never go very far only where
my leg powered pushbike will take me
down to the shops then back home
far enough for anyone to go..👍

This is so great and I'm so grateful for it. I absolute HATED this song when I was a kid and then over the last few years I just love it and can finally play it.
Am I crazy or is the original in a lower tuning? The fingering seems like it works with the original can't get to the deepest notes, like they are tuned down.
    Any thoughts?

    • @alonzogarbanzo
      @alonzogarbanzo  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hey thanks. The original by the Roftop singers came out in A flat, because the two Gibson B-45 12-strings they used were tuned down one half step from regular guitar pitch. The tune, though, was played in "A" positions just as in my video here.

    • @Iregretmostofmyposts

@@alonzogarbanzo thanks again! I just got back into guitar to play some folk with my buddies. Thanks to your tutorial I pretty much got the song down last night. I have to keep fine tuning it but it's pretty much there.
Watching you and learning to play it, I see that I always heard the song differently than what it actually is. It's funny that the other tutorials from other TH-camrs play the song almost identical to how I have always misheard it. You nail it. I love the notes, the jazz-ish chords and it's one of funnest songs to play.
Again, thanks, you're a great teacher and the work you did on this video is A+++. Best I've ever seen.

    • @alonzogarbanzo
      @alonzogarbanzo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Omigosh! I hadn't noticed! Just kidding. The reasons for using a 6 for instructional purposes are explicated early (0:27) in the video. Go to 10:29 if you want to hear it on my 12.

Nice lesson. You cover a rather wide genre of songs. Is your guitar in this video a Sigma Guitar originally released by C.F. Martin and made in Japan? If so what model and what year was it made? Thanks

I meant teach it on a 12th St. instead of waiting till after 10 minutes. Why are you using a capo of the fourth fret when the original players do not use a capo I could not hear you? How how nice job!
