I was certain this wasn't getting a nomination because it's way too dark for the academy but I'm still pissed it wasn't even given a nomination when Simon Rex gave one of the best performances of the year.
YESSSSS!!! He deserved it, but doesn't need it. The performance tells us everything we need to know about Rex - he's an incredible talent who before now was never given an opportunity to show it. So proud of what he's accomplished here. Really hope he gets to continue getting work like this because he is outstanding!
Hearing NSYNC's "Bye Bye Bye" right there took me back to loving this song as a six year old! How ironic that Sean's previous film focused on six year old kids as well! EDIT: This was two years before DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE made this song famous once again.
@@jacobangeles5539 It works really well in this film because it fits into the story’s themes and doesn’t come up just once, and it’s also a throwback to the 90s/2000s, when Simon Rex was a household name who eventually lost his success and relevance, and this is his return to the spotlight, sort of like how his character is a washed up porn star who’s no longer relevant and tries to start a new path in his life, but things go awry when he meets Strawberry.
@@ramomate1705 Part of the reason the film ends the way it does is that it leaves the rest of his journey open-ended. You don’t know whether he decides to clean up his act and learn from his mistakes, but the sad truth is that he most likely will keep getting himself into trouble and taking advantage of others because he’s stuck in his own delusion. That’s why it ends at the perfect moment. A close-up of his face as he gasps for air. What will he do next?
Simon Rex is brilliant in this. Dude plays it perfect. Its a great movie. All the actors are awesome. Great movie i totally know guys like him , its hilarious, also he looks like Tommy Lee
Amazing movie! I regret not seeing it twice in theaters. I honestly think it's one of the best movies I've seen in the last five years. I adore the way Baker allows the audience to have an opinion of their own on such a taboo subject matter. He never once tries to push an agenda, and it's actually so refreshing to see that in such a "woke" period of cinema. Also, Simon Rex was completely robbed of an Oscar nomination.
I might as well pirate these movies if they never come to my city/town. I’ve been dying to see some of these movies, and all I get is fuckin ‘SING 2’, sigh.
@von How is that review reflective of your thoughts? What exactly was so bad about the film? The acting was incredible, the cinematography beautiful, sets, costume etc. These often prove to be significant aspects which allow a film to be great, good films don't always have to follow a conventional plotline.
@von I never once mentioned budget anywhere in my praise so I'm not sure where you plucked that from. The budget for the film was only 15 mill, that's tiny compared to the high budget films that dominate cinema. As for the plot, I'm currently writing a dissertation comparing the film and the original text it's based on and it's clear that for people who disliked the source material or I assume in your case, have never read the source material then they aren't going to understand or enjoy the plot. The film isn't for you.
Just from this 5 minute clip I can tell they fucking have the location nailed on. I knew it was set in Texas the moment they showed the bleak housing set amongst billion dollar chemical plants.
This movie is fantastic and hilarious. Although, it's not really a comedy with a capital K. It's in that category of "comedies that aren't comedies" like Wolf of Wall Street and Tarantino movies.
Ahh my hometown, well home county, im from Galveston County (league city) this is shot in the same county but about 15mins south of where I’m from (Texas City, La Marque, Galveston) there’s a few scenes you can tell are shot in like Port Arthur but like 95% of this movie was shot in the 3 I mentioned above.
I can see why you say that. The plot isn't really spoon feeding the viewer what the film is building up to. Everything is presented in a grounded manner, as well as the chain of events. My family isn't too huge on films like this, but the way information was presented did ease them into the engagement.
Wow who are all these people pumping the shit out of this movie with great reviews? This 5 min clip makes me want to look for something else to watch tonight. Looks like it was made on a $50k budget with 1 camera.
The plot of the show seems so improbable -- if the guy is a big time porn actor in L.A., how does he suddenly become destitute, so much so that he has to move back to his hometown and beg a place to stay from his ex ? Those guys supposedly make big $$$ .. 😕
This movie was absolute garbage. Dont waste over 2 hours of your life. Sean Baker should be banned from making anything other than a taco for the rest of his life. The main character is the most unlikable POS and almost no one in the movie is likeable. Worst movie I've seen in maybe 3 years and I see A LOT of movies. I wouldn't even give it a 1/10. That's how bad it is. Shame on you Baker. I've seen better film on teeth.
