Always buy what you like. Sometimes you get lucky and it's worth something, and if not at least you like it.
I do that myself,and thus far I've had no cause to regret it.
And if I talk myself out of something by trying to be practical,or less 'self-indulgent',or whatever,I almost always regret it.That black 1940s vintage dress-!
I have an 8 carat brown diamond (not certified quality) from Thailand, I paid $150.00 and had it set in a pinky ring. The Jeweler kinda rolled His eyes, like Why would You bother. I said, Your very reaction is why, I know nobody else has one.

So true. Listening to your intuition is way under appreciated. I think we've all bought clothes or other items where we were not sure. If you're not in love with an item in the shop don't buy it.
This isn't the first time something like this has happened, many people are ignorant to the value of the things they throw out. My dad worked in a funeral home and when an elderly lady passed away her family said they had no more use for many of her things so did he have any female family members who would want her stuff? He gave a massive box full of her possessions to my daughter. Most of it was used make up, perfumes, some scarves etc but there was also a small bag of - what we presumed to be - costume jewelry but my eldest daughter was fixated on one ring. Whilst it looked like a costume piece she swore it was real gold and the stone in the middle looked like a real ruby. Turns out she was right, we got the ring appraised and found out it was worth around eight thousand. My kids have good consciences so said we have to give it back to the owners but the owners were so touched by their good natured - and still grieving - that they let us keep the ring. My daughter refuses to sell it though.
If the family put it in the box because they thought it was cheap junk and not worth anything then why would I go back after finding out what the ring was worth and give it to them?

No it's what dumb people do!! There's nothing to be "honest" about!! You acting like you stole something! The family said enough when they chucked it. It was worthless in their eyes.
@@Dirtnap1986 Then in your heart you are dishonest. They didn't think there was any value. When the girls found out there was, it was kind, respectful and honest to go back and tell them something is monetary value was in there. Only if you are honest though.

You can keep kidding yourself. If you went through a deceased family members things and thought "hey it's junk, trash it" and it happens to fall into someone's possession from the garbage or you sold it for little to next to nothing then...... I'm not coming back to let them know that there was actual value in something they saw no value in. What's the point! All this sanctimonious talk about being honest when y'all probably not even honest in your day to day lives!! So many people have been given/found or bought items that ended up being worth a pretty penny. Should all these people give those items back to the families?

LOVED this young lady's reaction. There have been a lot of other items wth MUCH higher appraisals but this is one of my favorites. This ring is STUNNING and I would wear it ALL THE TIME!!
That ring is beautiful! I metal detect the beach occasionally and DREAM of finding something old and unique like that. Awesome ring and a cool little history session!

I was an estate sale and the person running the sale didn't know what Van Briggle pottery was. I cleaned up at a 4-5 $ a piece.
What kind of estate sale appraiser would look at a ruby and diamond gold ring and be like "yep, $200"

I guess it's easy to look at something like that, with the dinged stone and enamel, and think it's just costume or something. They may have thought they got one over on someone by having her pay $200 for it.
Enough to make for some very fine Antiques Roadshow finds...thank goodness.

I usually don't like gaudy ostentatious things but that ring gets away with not getting to that point! It's really more of a nifty and clever looking ring I like it!

Can someone please explain why the insurance value is often greater than the auction value? I always wondered that..
the auction estimate is what a piece could likely sell for at auction
The insurance value is higher in order to cover the maximum amout it would likely take to replace an item at retail.

Auctions take a big premium too, so even if you found a replacement at auction, you would pay 20% extra or more

Why is insurance double what it’s worth to buy it at an auction?
Does anyone know why some people feel the need to speak while being spoken to? I deal with it regularly and usually a person who does it, misses important information I'm trying to relay.
I think it's called active listening, where the person responding is reacting in a way that indicates they hear and understand what they're being told. If they're arguing or disagreeing or interrupting to guess what you're going to say to show off or adding to in a bragging manner that can be irritating. This woman just seems excited to learn.

The large chip in the ruby is very distracting. I don't believe the appraiser is correct when she says it does not affect value. Due to the size and prominence of the chip, it would affect value.
Yes. I'm sure you know more than the appraiser on one of the worlds' most prominent television shows famous for it's appraisals.

Keep dreaming. No one will offer $2,000 - $3,000 for that unless they have some personal attraction to it. A dealer will weigh the ring and pay scrap gold plus perhaps $300 above scrap. The Burma ruby is commercial and odd shaped and the melee (small diamonds) weigh around half a carat.. looks like around $1,000 tops.
