I found “Leadbelly’s last session” on vinyl in a thrift store in the early 90s and it was missing one album. It had this and other cuts on it that I absolutely burned up. I grew up on Leadbelly, he was one of my favorites since I was a very young child. He influence to be heavily, musically speaking. One of the all-time greatest. Ever. Period

@Hey I was only giving orders "Christ of the Cottonfields" I've been a Leadbelly lover since the early 60's. When my friends were raving about Del Shannon, Bobby Rydell and other early 60's pop stars. I was selling them on Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Fats Domino, Little Richard Blind Willie Johnson, Bo Diddley and a whole lot more. Those were great days.......

I have been searching for this song since 1996, when a now departed friend played it for two days straight, no sleep when not one stage recording a live album for a songbird in West Texas. I worked the door at the venue, and local tour guide for the two sidemen, a photographer and whoever were riding around in a big ass van, or back at the hotel room where the All-nightAmped up on a live album being recorded in a small room, but sonically perfect.
Yet, the late blue guitar pimp playing this song repeatedly offstage was one of the highlights of the whole thing, and has had me on a 25 year search for this song in particular…. Jack Johnson would have been on that death trip, had it not been for possibly being the most hated man in Western Civilization at the time. Hatred saved his life, and I find a tragic yet beautiful irony in this, my favorite Leadbelly song hands down. Just hits me to the core.

I found this record at a thrift store in '98 missing one of 3 records. I grew up on his music, but his last session (which is what this was from) stopped me cold. One of my all time favorites.

I first became familiar with this song through Jamie Brockett. I had no idea it was a Lead Belly song. And now I'm wondering. Is every song a Lead Belly song? He gave us so much music.

I'm a big Leadbelly fan, but this is the first time I've heard him sing this. He sounds old here.
Jaime Brockett does a humorous interpretation of this song that follows Leadbelly's lyrics, but adds a monologue behind Brockett's 12-string that tells a story about the First Mate and the Captain, and how the First Mate was responsible for the sinking.
Not gonna spoil it. Just search TH-cam for Jaime Brockett. The version showing an LP record on a turntable has the best audio.

Book of Zephaniah: “For by the fire of my wrath the whole earth will be consumed. I will remove all things from the face of the earth," declares the Lord. "I will remove man and beast, the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea. I will cut off man from the face of the earth and remove the ruins along with the wicked. So, I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and I will remove the names of the idolatrous priests along with the priests. I will bring distress on men so that they will walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the Lord. “Neither their gold nor their silver will be able to deliver them on the Day of God's wrath. For He will make a complete end - indeed a terrifying one - of all the inhabitants of the earth. All the earth will be devoured in the fire of God's anger.”

very dodgy guitar borders on the awful and raw primitive isn't a right discription, awfully good no way?
and Huddie's very stride a full vocal doesn't need the accompanyment it just is his voice
singing and it sounding equally raw and jangling and in all oddities there it is captured
and recorded and badly recorded at that primitive moment in a room caught an intimate
conversation he among friends chatting of a memory working it into some entertainment and a dry humour
of a Segway to his tune probably very well rehearsed through many similar song sessions hit and miss
50/50 all according to how drunk a listening you might chance to be in your mood...
thats when it hits you .. what did he say and what did he play ...
it's then and there you stop and restart thinking wait wait a minute
then huddies got inside your head and there's nothing frivolous in his effort to give
an accurate awful truth about a lie write of that desperate history, that he knew. he on the wrong side
of life's living unavoidable living in America the land of the lie.
whoevered want to be there on that deck in the dark night the deep frozen ocean
(its not what the songs about..its huddie is he saying something other than the tune and song)
jump or stay. even today its still kept quiet and the made up narrative is the news no-one wants the truth.
    PS
today is the second day of November 2024 Bon pyre night soon its on the fifth
the traitor shall burn for parliaments sake trussed and broken all his bones all his
friends and conspiring plotters hung drawn and quatred all now dead
and we'll dance round the pyre we do and the fireworks display
the burnt wood and gun powder stench it will remain for days
the bangs and pops have begun for Guy Fawkes' and his big day on the 5th
and odd the yanks are going to the polling for a president during the same day
must be some masonic all seeing eye thing ritualistic Baal elitist mumbo-jumbo
hop skip and jumping round the sacrificial murder.
